A great film! Sam has said in old interviews that he tried to capture his experiences in war and that he saw death happening in seemingly slow motion. - Sam was on the money with this one!
AN ALL-TIME CLASSIC ! 6-----------COUNT 'EM 6 OSCAR WINNING OR NOMINATED ACTORS IN ONE FILM : William Holden -----------Edmund O'Brien ---------Robert Ryan--------Ernest Borgnine --------Ben Johnson & Warren Oates. Add to that, 4 top Mexican actors : Jaime Sanchez -----Emilio Fernandez------Alfonso Arau & Jorge Russek.------originally, Peckinpah wanted Lee Marvin to be Pike Bishop & Jack Palance as Dutch Engstrom. Now, it is impossible to imagine this all-time classic with anyone but these great actors. MY #1 film of all-time, & my #1 Western of all-time. A film for men--------about men------by men ------& not., for women. -------In that summer of '69, I saw this classic 6 times. ---------------MJL, 77 y/o
I saw this when I was young as was impressed, but it's actually a film I appreciate more as I get older - the corrupt world around you, people exploiting the weak, ruthlessness and greed, yet you see how Pike and the bunch come to terms with the world closing in on them. The German in the film is very interesting, organisations like the CIA didn't exist back then, but it's not hard to guess that he's really using and manipulating Mapache, pulling strings behind the scens and working on his own agenda, and after Mapache, Pike decides he's the one that getting it next.
Great review you two, I saw this at 18 on the big screen twice in Beirut when it came out, I could never forget it and saw it since maybe 25 times in Canada. I was very pleased you spotted the only weak point of th whole masterpiece... the flash backs, always found them awkward myself.... Still, Peckinpah is so great: I just found out in a recent TH-cam vid that the master himself said it was the only thing he wished he could change, the flashbacks! 💫
