This was a joy to watch as well as listen. Two great ensembles - the singers and the musicians. What is telling is how much fun (or was it joy?) the King's Singers had in performing the song.
I have the BIGGEST grin on my face, aftrer watching TKS singing something I have never heard before... BUT it is BRILLIANT and quirky too, I LOVE IT ... Thnaks for posting this gem... Best regards to you @gloppo, from Wales UK ... :0)x

2:01 - that's an "I have the best job *ever*" look if I ever saw one :D Clearly they are all having too much fun. Bought the album on the strength of this vid. Love!
Me encantó!!!! Hermosas voces, hermosa interpretación de todos. Destaco lo que disfrutan al ejecutar la obra, esto se traslada directamente a la música resultante. Felicitaciones!!!
i've been baffled by the 37 dislikes. how is it possible someone would downvote this? now the video is over, i know: the detractors disliked the fact the video does not go on forever ... or isn't at least twice as long. makes sense.
Not sure if I'm answering your query but the improvised (?) solo played by the gentleman is on a cornett - an instrument often used along with sackbutts (trombones) in the 16/17th century. The cornett's usually played by trumpet players today due to the mouthpiece.
Thanks a lot for your quick response! Yes, that one, cornett, I love the sound - could be the wood - and he played really well. Have a great day/evening!
Sorry, Davo D, but there was an instrument called a cornett, now an ancient one with no place in the modern orchestra, and it has nothing to do with a modern brass cornet which is similar to a trumpet, with three valves. A cornett, also known as a cornetto, is always wooden, but with a cup-shaped mouthpiece requiring lip vibrations against it to produce sound, the way modern brass instruments are. The cornett often has leather covering the wood, and the mouthpiece is typically carved from natural animal horn. Finger holes similar to those on a recorder control the pitch. Cornetts could be straight, but more often have curvature and the one in the video does and is typical. There is no doubt whatsoever that what is seen here is a cornett. The cornett was used in the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods and faded from use around 1650, but its use has been revived in performing ancient music from those three periods. By the way, it isn't a "flute" as you called it, because a flute produces sound either by blowing across a mouthpiece hole, much like doing that with a glass bottle, if it's a transverse flute held crosswise, or it uses a fipple in the mouthpiece and produces a sound the way a whistle does. The cornett, as I mentioned uses a cup shape mouthpiece held against the lips and the lips are vibrated to make the sound -- so you can't classify it as a flute.
One issue to consider: it's a colonial piece meant as imitation (one could say mockery) of Africans (likely enslaved people). So, there's racism in the piece. Is it right to ignore this background?
This is what I call music. Pure, melodic, rythm, sublte, soft, balance. It's just perfection. Music at its peek.
Every time I listen to this I end up with a huge smile. It's wonderful to see the interactions between all the musicians, Love it!!!!
And this is one of the best KS lineups ever IMO.
Geez, I love and miss Stephen Connolly so much. He is the perfect bass.
Not only perfect. He is the best Bass ever! :)
ichimokuryouzen the current bass is very good too. I find both of them excellent

To gmartirosyan: the "fa la la" is probabily in an italian madrigale "amor vittorioso". try youtube and you'll fin it (king's singer amor vittorioso).
wow
oui
Try looking for "A history of madrigal". Its a sort of documental produced by the BBC with the King's Singers
Has anyone seen video where King's Singers and this band are performing a song called "Fa la la"??
O Joy !
Quelqu'un peut il me dire où acheter la partition de ce chant magnifique
Excellent! What instrument is the flute type one?

That flute is anything, but certainly not a cornet. A cornet is a trumpet-like instrument and is a brass instrument, not a flute. :D

Can anyone translate the lyrics into English?

But not bang up to date because Tyson and Connolly are still there :)

Una buena aproximación, falta el ritmo auténtico.

Actually, Pluhar does mention it here: th-cam.com/video/6xQ79t_ZaKs/w-d-xo.html. Her narrative seems too rosy to me, though.
So are we just going to block a load of music out of history, how utterly dull.
@@oliviahunt2760 Good point, no no, not block it, just talk about it I think would be nice
