How to use your fingers when fingerpicking so you can become familiar with the strings and hit the correct one when playing. This lesson will familiarize your picking hand fingers with the strings. You will learn the “golden rule” of traditional fingerpicking, which finger is responsible for which string, as well as learn how to read fingerpicking notation on the tablature staff.
These are the easiest 6 fingerstyle/fingerpicking steps to playing your first fingerstyle song. When you complete these 6 fingerstyle guitar lessons you'll be prepared to play an easy beginner arrangement of Freight Train, probably the most popular and widely known classic fingerpicking songs ever!

I dunno the key to teaching anyone anything is not to bore them to death for the first half of the video where they either skip through too much and miss the important bit or sit through the first half and get so bored they decide guitar isn't for them anymore...

SpazyEDM just learn strumming patterns and you're good. Because you'll eventually learn how to strum and what is the root notes of a chord.
My motivation here: I am jumping back in after a long break... I fall under the "stage 2" plateau group... I bought a new Taylor for my renewed interest in playing... Your approach and presentation suits me well... After you described the three stages and offered up the download links I hit them immediately --- I want in... Whether free or at a cost --- I want in...

Thanks for replying! I wasnt expecting a response i think it really boils down to what style of music your playing. For me the index is absolutley necessary and this is a beginners course and if your goal is to have people playing fingerstyle in a week then i think the 3 finger approach is the quickest way to acheive that and like i said you can still be a good fingerpicker and use only 3 fingers im pretty sure django only used 2 fingers lol

This is a little strange for me. I was taught slightly different. The way I was taught, as a GENERAL rule, was the thumb covered the low E, A and D strings...and index, middle and ring fingers covered their own INDIVIDUAL string. INDEX for G...Middle for B...And Ring for E.
My understanding is that the one-string-per finger approach you describe is more in the classical style. Using the index finger to cover two strings is just another way of doing it, probably chosen to suit learning the particular song that is the aim of the 6 lessons. But I bet if you choose to use the 4-finger style you are more used to, it will sound just fine.
Jedediah Szostak You’re absolutely right. It would sound perfectly fine. Really, at the end of the day, there’s no set of rules or guidelines that dictate how you’re supposed to finger pick. As long as the timing is right in the proper notes are played… What difference does it really make? The guitar is an AMAZING instrument though isn’t it? You can literally spend a lifetime learning the instrument!
Yeah, i like the classical position too. Thats the way i was taught. Why depend on aiming the thumb or finger on multiple strings, when you can assign each finger to its own string? More accurate and less chance of hitting the wrong string.. It seems like it would be more difficult, but maybe its just me. I cant get comfortable with the 3-finger position.
Elizabeth Cotten used P+i exclusively and made wonderful music.
I learnt the same way but someone one day told me to try using the pinky saying that it's easier
So the thumb for the first 2 low strings and then each finger has its own string

I’ve been learning Guitar with the strumming style the past 6 months (in reality 2-3 months excluding the time I quit) but I’m now starting to venture into Fingerstyle as it looks a bit more authentic and I think it’ll suit me better. Anywho, ima give it a try. Wish me luck lol!

littlewing1208 Not a good idea It'll just get in the way of your picking break the habit if you haven't done so already
Dumbledore I'll have to disagree. This has been a long standing argument. I've seen and heard pros and cons for each technique from different players. If pinkies touching the body of the instrument really hinders your picking, then I don't think it would be used as a teaching and playing method for a lot for the ultimate finger pickers, the banjo players. I've even seen some banjo instructors teach players to not only anchor their pinky, but their third finger as well.. I'd say, do whichever works for you, but also give the alternative method a good trial run to see how you like it.

I've not played in so long that holding chords made my fingers scream. Otherwise this lesson is rather nice. Never tried the first 3 strings, that is E, A, & D with just my thumb. Also made it easier to find the other strings with the correct finger.
One thing-I'll try your way but has always seemed to me that assigning the index finger to 2 strings means one more decision you have to make (which string to hit with that finger) w/so many other things to think about. I assume doing it this way is to not use the weaker "ring finger" for anything?

The thumb is p (pulgar), the index is i (indice), the middle is m (medio), and the ring finger is a (anular).
