He was fondly called the dirt collector, by his old master Mr.charles haughey. He would get the dirt on anyone who stood in the way of the party line. People were always won over by his method of playing the old fool, but he was a well trained snake in the grass. All that concerns bertie now is how the history books will scribe his legacy forever in irish history, and im told its not looking good for him. good riddance to bad blood.

"He is the best, the most skillful, the most devious and the most cunning."
    - Charles Haughey's description of his successor as Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern.

I am a 29year old well qualified male and have in-fact moved to out of Ireland with my wife and newly born baby in shame of the whole country and the way it has ended up! I seriously don't know how these politicians can show themselves in public...it's an absolute shame and I am only happy that the great men and women who gave their lives for us to have a Republic are not around to see just how corrupt and dirty Ireland has become!

Bertie Ahern will one day meet his maker and I truly hope that the process is a very painful one both before and after he passes. He and his cabinet colleagues destroyed this country and some have already met their fate in an appropriately painful manner. Their lack of appropriate action with regard to obvious problems in the economy, and they did have enough qualification and power to deal with them, means that generations in Ireland will suffer. Many have killed themselves (through depression/despair) and have died (through inadequate health services, etc...) as a result of the current situation caused mainly by their wrong actions whilst in power. If Bertie Ahern had any decency in him, he would have admitted his mistakes, refused any government pension and disappeared from public life. We all make mistakes, but the calibre of us is shown by the way we deal with them. I have never once heard Bertie Ahern apologise, admit his mistakes or accept punishment for same, thus his calibre is very very low in my humble opinion and at the quieter moments of the night he must realise, as he is an intelligent man I'll give him that, what a mess he has made of parts of his life.

Bertie Ahern is a disgrace to the Irish nation. For him to say 'I would've loved if somebody somewhere had've told me what was going on in the banks in this country but nobody ever did' displays his utter contempt for the intelligence of Irish people... If he, as Taoiseach, was not aware of the economic ramifications of the banks funding an unsustainable property boom/bubble, then he admits to utter incompetence. If he was aware and allowed it to continue, he should be held to account... SHAME!

‘’I would have loved if somebody somewhere had a told me what was going on in the banks in this country but nobody ever did’’ Bertie… I was a teenage student in Scotland during the last years of the Celtic Tiger and I could have given you a fair insight into what was going on in the banks throughout this period. It was obvious and it shouldn’t have taken any economist, banker, or fellow TD to prevent you from apparently being so oblivious to the situation.

  • @audience2
    @audience2 13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Pleading ignorance of the state of the banks is unbelievable. It was his job to keep the state on a sustainable path.
He's evidently still deluded since he won't acknowledge his primary responsibility for allowing the real boom of the 90s turn into a property price bubble where all sight of value and competitiveness was lost.

There was a run on the Dublin branch of Northern Rock Bank (depositors queuing on the street to withdraw their funds) 13 months prior to "Eire's" bailout of the banks. On this most obvious spectacle of impending bank problems wasn't enough to get the notice of Mr. Ahern (Taoiseach) to make inquiries as to the solvency of his own banks, then it beggars belief. It is hard to believe no one in the then "opposition" or his own party hadn't brought this matter to his attention, as a wake up call ?

When Eric Cantona was here a few years ago promoting a movie Bertie showed up on the red carpet and presented him with a Dubs jersey with 'Cantona' written on the back. Posed with him for all the cameras (Cantona hadn't a clue who he was) and then pissed off. So for him to accuse this woman of looking for publicity is ridiculous. As well as that in '2007 Bertie wondered why all economists who showed concern with the economy 'didn't go off and commit suicide' SHAME SHAME SHAME ON YOU BERTIE!!

    00:49
"get themselves on radio and TV"
    right there!
I don't know Irish politics but if ANY American politician were to say that, we would be infuriated.. It's dismissive of people that may be suffering legitimate grievances that are plausibly the result of your decisions.
    He should have said,
"I understand your pain, mam.. Alot of people are suffering and I'm doing my best to bring relief to you in these hard times. There's no easy answer".
    Even if it's a lie.

As for the collapse that he did not know about (He told certain people who tried to tell talk some sense into him and his cronies to commit suicide), I read for years about the worry about a crash rather than a soft landing & also about the indebtedness Irish, everyone knew it was property driven bubble, you cannot build 80000 houses a year indefinitely for a pop of 4.5 million & expect house prices & therefore the tax income from the sale to remain high, I am not an economist I could see that
