I've had this as a "truck knife" for the past couple years. I've used it mainly for fishing things but also everyday things as well and it's a fantastic little fixed blade. I have definitely used it a bunch and it is still very sharp and very comfortable. Fantastic for a back up back back knife or truck knife
I carry one for my farm job. I have it on a spyderco belt clip and I wear it on my left hip. It’s amazing what it’s stood up too in the time I’ve used it. Everything from cutting roots to twine. Its always very easy to sharpen, and it can take an extremely sharp edge. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for fixed blade EDC
I own this knife . I use it as a EDC neck knife. Wore it for a year and actually enjoy it. It works incredibly well for say food prep. Plus as a last defense knife it can definitely do the job. I bought it for 20$ from Wal-Mart. I do agree the blade could be better but it does work . love to see this knife in a better steel .
I think it’s important to be constructive because if it’s just all negative, it doesn’t help propel things forward. Hopefully they are able to make minor changes in the future. Thank you for watching!
I waited to buy the SPEW when it was on sale for $21.00. Glad I waited and happy to own the knife. It has proven itself handy. The blade is slicey and the tip is great for piercing. Used a hair dryer to heat the sheath and make the sheath more secure.
Ir is amazing. I got mine for 13 bucks. I gave it to my daughter. I have 1000 dollar chris reeve blades but what good is it for a woman in distress? This is a simple and effective design..this lady knows nothing , nada ,
Just so you know, SMKW has this knife in D2 and I believe Brown Micarta handle . If that would make it more appealing. Thanks for reviewing something you don’t necessarily like, too many times people seem to give sales pitch instead of review. Allen
Oh good to know, thank you. I believe that even if I don’t like something, someone else may find it’s for them! And that is great. I try to give my honest review and thoughts on it, then people can make the decision for themselves.
The SMKW edition is a big improvement. Obviously the D2 is an improvement but it's also well coated and fits the sheath a bit tighter than the original version. I removed the lanyard from mine. Neck carry has worked fine for me. Hasn't dropped loose yet.
Love this knife. I neck carry mine, it is Very handy, and works awesome. Just wish it was a quarter of an inch longer and wish it made in D2. I like sharpening knives and if you want to learn it is a good blade to start on. They are under 25 bucks at Walmart.
Just got one of these for Xmas gift and it feels like a pretty good little knife. I guess I don't mind the 5cr on a neck knife bc it's my "last resort" knife anyway. I can also sharpen it myself pretty easy and can see why that could be a deal breaker if you don't know how to sharpen knives. I wouldn't choose 5cr for my edc knife, but I don't mind cheap steel for your boot or neck knife. Everyone is different though.
Many of the CRKT & Minimalist line is overpriced. $20 all day. There's always some site jacking up prices. Like the individuals on eBay selling the $12 Kershaw Hotwire for $20 + shipping. 🤬 I love my CRKT SPEW. It's taken all my abuse for 2 years and still hair-popping sharp. It's great for doing intricate carbo of details on my walking staffs or Fatwood Ferro rod handles. It's a utility blade, for sure.
I bought a spew 7-8 years ago and the scale on one side popped off because the scale material is too thin where they countersunk for the screws. This happened 5 mins after buying it, just in handling it not even using it. I put some epoxy on both sides and it worked after that. I still replaced it with a Bark River Little Carver in 3v, no comparison. If at all possible for you save and pay more for better materials, fit and finnish.
Ya know what's crazy is I found this knife in a Walmart down here for 60$ I was thinking did they upgrade the steel... nope... lmao good reviews. Praise be robot overlords. Cheers
i wanted one of these but i hate 5cr15 so when i saw SMKW had an exclusive with d2 blade steel i jumped on it. anything less than 8cr13mov is a nope from me
U destroyed this review. It is a modified wharnicliffe that is perfect for penetration. It is part of the minimalist series and are more for "in a pinch situations ". A knife isnt all about aesthetics. Some are meant to be unseen. Its under 30 bucks..it is a budget knife. But If you are on that hike or a lady on that first date, this may save your life. Be smart and do some research before shitting on the reputation of a decent company.
Thank you for commenting, I appreciate your feedback. A few things to note: This knife was designed by the same designer as the Minimalist series of knives, Alan Folts, however, it is not part of the Minimalist series. At $30 I feel that it is overpriced for 5cr series steel, and the injection molded sheath is not great. There are other options in this price range for a small fixed blade with better materials. You can see my review of the Tonife Nova for an example; it has 9cr steel, a proper kydex sheath with good retention, a metal pocket/belt clip, and it costs less than the S.P.E.W. Wharncliffe blades are good for piercing, but the blade stock on this knife is very thin, and the tip of the knife is very acute, making it prone to bending or snapping during use. The Amazon reviews are full of people complaining about the thin steel, the lack of retention on the sheath, and the flimsy plastic belt clip, all of which I also encountered. That being said, there are also plenty of people that love this knife. If you love it, that’s great! It’s not my intent to trash talk any knife. My reviews are just my opinions and they’re based on my experiences using the knife for day-to-day tasks. Everyone’s tastes, opinions, and daily use requirements will be different and that’s what’s so great about the knife community; there’s something for everyone.
It’s dangerous as sh!t. Be careful when you draw the knife because there is no blade guard. After i cut myself for the 3rd time i retired it as an edc. It is crazy sharp though and i personally like the design and shape.
Why spend time customizing a blade that you don't like the shape of or the quality steel of when it's a cheap blade and you could just buy another knife?
The possibility of making it my own and updating it to be something I can appreciate isn’t that time consuming and it’s a fun project. I spent probably 20 minutes to darken the handles and I like it more now. I also want to help people who may not know that they can modify stuff like this, so they can make gear work better for them.
Totally fair, especially with the S.P.E.W steel choice. But the designer of this knife does do custom versions of it in higher grade steel but they are hard to come by.

Smokey mountain knife works has them in D2 steel.
Good to know you are objective in your reviews. It is appreciated. Much respect.

Maybe I am your firts Brazilian subscriber.
Loved the way you desbribe this blade. I bought one and I am searching info about it.

For sure! Go with what you like and what works best for you!
Good video. You can buy this knife at Walmart for $20. I had one, and gave it to a bow maker as a tip. I wore it everyday on my belt.
Dyeing the G10 was a WAAAY good choice! Wharncliffes always used to make me think of DUNE knives, but the SPEW especially!
Yea dying it was worth it I think!
Exceptional video!
I have one of those I wish they made one with a four inch blade. It’s a really great knife
It's actually a pretty decent throwing knife as well due to the balance and the pointyness
Great video

I’m glad it’s still working for you after two years, that’s great to hear.
As far as the overpriced part, it is disheartening.
OAL of 6”, and a blade length of 3”. It also retails at $23.
Love the review
Thank you!

Don’t like the S.P.E.W. But I did really like the video. Glad to find your channel. I already know I’ll enjoy it.
I’m not a fan of it either, but I wanted to do a review for those who might like it.
Thank you for your kind words!
the only thing I hate about the SPEW is the handle is doesn't come all the way to your pinky
Ya know what's crazy is I found this knife in a Walmart down here for 60$ I was thinking did they upgrade the steel... nope... lmao good reviews. Praise be robot overlords. Cheers
Damn just got mine for $27
@Supremebean303 It do be going down in price again luckily Most of CRKT is overpriced with mid steel
Very cool 😎 although a 14C28N blade would be great 😁👍
I’ve bought two of these knives. $20 each. One in 2020. One in 2022.
I like the handle and blade length but not the shape. If this was a drop point I'd get one thanks for sharing .
The drop point would probably be more usable. There is a cleaver kind but similar issue I feel.
The belt loop works both ways you just need to put it on...
Smkw has it in d2 , I hate d2 but will get it because it reminds me of a strider design
i wanted one of these but i hate 5cr15 so when i saw SMKW had an exclusive with d2 blade steel i jumped on it. anything less than 8cr13mov is a nope from me
Amazon has it for around 20 bucks
Just got this on my local Wal-Mart for 5 dollars 😂. I grabbed to more kershaw for 9-15 dollars
Haha oh boy, at least it was a nice Walmart trip that wasn’t too expensive!
@petiteedc just went the other day and some of those knives are going for 45 or more now lol...
You must have gone while they were on a good sale!
@petiteedc yeah! I should've grabbed more of those

I guess it's only good for self defense, being they used 5Cr15MoV. I'd neck carry it.
that super skinny tip looks like it would break if you used rough language.
I laughed out loud when I read this hahaha
It’s wicked thin overall for sure. Definitely don’t want to use this for any real heavy work.
It’s dangerous as sh!t. Be careful when you draw the knife because there is no blade guard. After i cut myself for the 3rd time i retired it as an edc. It is crazy sharp though and i personally like the design and shape.
Great advice. I have accidentally cut my finger before with knives but I am definitely more careful afterwards.

Lose the dandelions and plant better pollenator attracting plants 👌
They do need them to get started but I do agree that we should plant much more diverse plants for them.
Gladly pay 10 extra dollars for better steel
I was serving in afghan land for the USMC and traded a bottle of Gatorade to a goat herder for that knife 😂😂😂😂😂😂
all these neck knives have cool handles but to me they just feel like scrap material

@@petiteedc no i mean like they had some short cut off pieces left over that they made miniature knives into.
Get smart and weave some 550 over that pathetic lanyard. That's what I've done with the cheap CRKT's that I've bought.
You already failed this review with "let me review a knife I dont like".
I am still not a fan of this knife for many reasons. While the color change did help the aesthetics, I don’t carry this and still am not a fan.
