    Build a lid over those fish because a bird will sit there and pick them right off the surface and have a good meal

      Maybe do a dark clear plastic cover over the tanks, so some sun still gets through an keeps unwanted gust out ...

      Great point. Perhaps use more of the sun shading materials that they used over the plants. Raccoons love sushi on the fly. They come looking for the water source and stay for the chilapa rolls.

      Me too. I just was going to say that. And let one of the girls paint red shutters around the windows. Or maybe just paint some fancy headboard type of decoration at the top. That cabin is scream red shutters with a heart cut out in middle. Must be the Swiss-german talk that reminded of the chalets with shutters up in the Alps.
      Also some one mentioned concrete on path to out house. I have one of those plastic pattern concrete forms to make your concrete look like stone. It's real easy to use and it won't be a flat slick surface to fall on. Can't wait till you start on the inside. Do you worry about any people hiking thru the woods and lodging in your cabin when your not around? Most people would be respectful...but there is always one bad apple in the bunch. Hope your family had a great 4th. Now are you going to get back to your kitchen project, or are we going to see other projects?

Wonderful job on finishing the outside of the house, looks good with the cleanup done. Loved the giant mouse pad teriffic job! I bought shade cloth myself for my green house, couldn't believe how much it lowered the temperature!! I'm going to get some more and find a way to suppend it over my garden area above the outdoor tomatoes to protect them from the harsh sun and extend the tomato growing season. Good job guys. Great show. Don't know if anyone has said this before? The railing to my porch steps is galvanized Steele pipe. Heat in Florida is no joke n being handicapped I don't have a ramp so I use that railing to get up the steps some times pull myself up depending on my pain level. That pipe in the sun heated up n it left burns on my hands n any skin touching it. So lol we found a pool noodle on the side of the road. I made my daughter stop n get it. She thought I was nuts. Got that pink bad boy home n cut a slit long ways like was done with y'all's fence n no more burns n if it rains it's quite cool to touch. This summer I am seeing pool noodles on all railings in my neighborhood. Apparently my landlord is putting them on all metal railings.

    • @BeccaBullard8
      @BeccaBullard8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no!!! I’m so sorry you got burned from grabbing the railing, that’s just awful. I’m disabled too so my heart goes out to you...I’m really happy you found a solution with a pool noodle and your landlord was good with it, even adding more around the complex...that’s a great landlord. I was expecting you to say the landlord removed your noodle. Thank goodness for an understanding one, I know there are a lot of apt. complexes that would’ve said no to them here in Texas and it gets really hot here as well.
      Anyways I hope you having a wonderful weekend and stay cool.

      @@BeccaBullard8 thank you n it was just bad first degree burns except 3 that blistered. But no scars. N my Landlady thought it was pure genius. We have several elderly here n my Landlady is strict but in terribly kind. Lol she has a big out door pool she put one on her handrail. The other upside to those noodles is they are neon n show up well in headlights it makes it easier to find your trailer n steps at night too.

    • @BeccaBullard8
      @BeccaBullard8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rebecca Miller well that’s good that is was only 1st degree burns and some blisters with no scarring, but I know it still hurt like heck.
      You know I never would’ve even thought about noodles being neon and helping at night to see the stairs...that makes it even better. It was definitely a genius idea not doubt about it.
      I’m betting everyone is glad you came up with that idea since your landlady has added them to their railings as well. It’s definitely safer for everyone. You would think that manufacturers would come up with a material that doesn’t get hot to build railings with especially in the South where it get extremely hot. You know just like they did for the slides in the playgrounds.
      I remember when I was young we couldn’t enjoy the slides during the summer because they were metal and would burn the heck out of us, it only took one time to learn not to get on the slide... lol
      But nowadays kids don’t have to worry about the slide being to hot, thank goodness 😅.
      Well have a good night and sleep well.

      @@BeccaBullard8 lol it was TH-cam hack. When you was about 3 I was wearing black patten leather shoes n a frilly synthetic lace dress at a family party at my uncle's. He had a floor furnace n it was winter those shoes were like ice skates I I fell on my right side. Burned my right thigh from side to back n my right arm from hand to elbow. I am 54 now n I wake up from night mares from those burns they were 3 Rd degree. Back then they washed burned like that everyday. N trip to hospital was almost 40 miles each way. Remember I had to stand in the car between my dad's legs cause I couldn't sit down. Car trip was faster than ambulance back then. He couldn't t hold me cause I was burned so bad. Lol I still cannot grill our use a gas stove cause of it. It's been 50 years since that happened. So burning my hands are nothing but if I don't need to hurt I am gonna figure away to stop it. Latest burn incident was went to Walmart got a riding cart been sitting in the sun I didn't feel it at first had jeans on. But Lord took half hour to cool my but off. Without thinking swore n told my brother in front god n everybody ...If you smell bacon it's my ass on fire this seat is hot. Lord bunch of church people selling crosses fell out laughing. But that seat later set off my PTSD. I am over it now but it's the dumbest things you do. My brother got a couple of pillows n sewed to pillow cases together length wise so I go out to stores n use the riding carts I wo t get burned again. Now that is an original idea. Lol my Bro is my caregiver. Helps me cause I am fall risk n have severe health issues. Gotta love my siblings he takes care of me n my sister's take care of each other. N we still fight. But my Bro is a genius. Night ms Becca sweet dreams.

    I live in Tucson and have been raising blue tilapia and growing my own food in aquaponics for over 8 years now. To save energy for air I use a Venturi instead of air pumps. I also use a combination of grow beds with a bell syphon and a constant flow for my towers and buckets. The bell syphon in a grow bed will allow more airashion for the roots to breathe and be able to grow a bigger variety of plants. Something to think about is the Bio media, without a grow bed for the beneficial bacteria to grow you might want to look into installing a biofilter after the solids filter. I use k2 kaldnes with a venturi system to keep the media moving. The idea is to keep it moving so that any dead bacteria will not build up and potentially crash your system.
    Hope this was helpful :)
    I enjoy the creativity your family has and can’t wait for the next video!

    Hi guys! I love your videos. I want to suggest that you put a pipe about 3 to 4 inches across into your outhouse waste area. The pipe should down into the box area up the inside for a short ways then out side of the building and make about 3 to 3 feet taller than then the roof. Paint the outside pipe black and it will exhaust gases from your out house. You really don't want to wait until everyone is using it to do this. Because of the frog strangling rain that occurs in the mountains put a cap with a mesh over the top of the pipe. Bugs will otherwise take up residence in it and appear in the lower portion when you least expect them. Another suggestion after using the out house, put a handful of old hay or straw in the pit. Sporadically add wood ash from your fires or outdoor fire pits. Both will help keep the odor down somewhat. After pit is full move the outhouse over and cover pit with compost and wood ash then soil. Wait about 3 to 5 years and plant a tree in it. You'll have a happy tree. Y'all take care. Cat Weekly

    Garen and Ellie, You probably know this but when you build a fire you need to put rocks in the fire pit first because roots can catch fire under ground and then spark a forest fire miles away. Great job on the property!!

    • @BeccaBullard8
      @BeccaBullard8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maurice Powers how is that possible?
      A fire requires 3 things
      Oxygen, fuel and heat
      If you remove just one of those things you have no fire.
      So can roots underground catch fire without oxygen?
      I’m truly curious about how what you said can happen, so please don’t take offense, that’s not my intention.

    The air stones in the tank don’t actually add air to the tank. The bubbles circulate the water and create surface agitation. And where there is surface agitation that is where the oxygen exchange happens in your H2O.
    You will also want lids for the tanks. Direct sunlight is the main cause of algae in an aquarium and if you have a shiz load of algae it will feed on the nitrates that you want your plants to use!

      The algae shouldn't be a problem in the future. In my tanks the tilapia maintain the algae by eating it. Once the tank is fully stocked I see the the only areas that might get bad is any open water without the tilapia in it and the pipe draining the water back into the system. You can counter the algae build up from that pipe by feeding it to your Tilapia.

    There is a Swiss chocolate store in downtown Portland Oregon if you ever get a hankering for more. It’s more expensive than buying it in Switzerland and bringing it back but there’s all that shipping that has to occur. Also I’ve been told it’s not something you let sit around or toss in the freezer for later...eat it soon. I prefer the Champagne Truffles. 😊🍾 they are excellent!

      @@mylittlehomestead Thank you for that encouragement! It's a challenge, being an English Indie writer in a non-English-speaking country, so word of mouth goes a long way to help get the word out, but it also encourages me to keep writing and keep honing my craft! Five books and counting. ;-)

    Truely enjoy every video! I cringe a little when I see all the bugs. I love that none of you are afraid of them! I am sure if I was there it would be quite comical watching me RUN from all the bugs! They were all over the aquaponic system but I guess they are just doing what they are suppose to and helping the system grow and thrive!!! Please keep the videos coming I love the updates and seeing how you are all doing! The cabin looks awesome, can't wait to see the inside and what you will do in there!! Hope everyone is having a great summer! Ben's custom mouse pad was really nice too. I am not good at crafts but I love watching what you all come up with to fix things that go wrong. Hoping your enjoying your Jul 4 weekend. We just recently celebrated Canada day! Take care! Ben is a lovely addition to the family as well :)!

    Consider putting a lid over your fish tanks. As someone else said, it will protect them from predators. It will also keep them from jumping out when the get larger. Finally, covers will help reduce the algae you will have in your system by reducing the light that it needs to grow. Don’t worry about the fish getting enough light. They like darker, cooler places in the heat of the day anyway and you will still get plenty of light through the sides of the tanks you are using.
