Youre right. The Hill style shooting is, i think, the best style. I started out being taught that way with a Hill bow, gave it up for all the sights, mechanical releases, weight balance on the front of the bow, kisser button. I could hit but something was missing. Even used a crossbow. It was like carrying a howitzer. Now im back to a good honest straight bow and shooting like i was first taught. Its so much more simple and fun.

Enjoyed it Robert, there's a lot of people out there that are struggling to get decent with their shooting but there is no substitute for lots of practice. The catch is to make your practice no matter the style, quality practice. Like just taking one arrow and pretending that it is an actual hunting situation and do your best at all of the process of the shot. Focus hard on the spot and try to repeat the process as consistently as possible. This pertains to anything, from throwing a rock, a knife to an ax much less things like a ball or even a frisbee. It is all about training the brain what you are wanting to do. We've been blessed with the best computer ever, we just have to get to where we trust and quit arguing with it in our shots. Our brain can be easily trained to adjust for lead or distance. Focus with the smallest point possible, aim tiny and miss tiny. In other words, quit shooting at the deer and pick a very specific spot on the deer and burn a hole thru it as you shoot. Quality practice results in quality results. Quit worrying about 20 yards until you have mastered 12 yards and in. Then slowly begin stepping back as you get good another yard back or so. Make it fun and yet compete against yourself and your goals. You know when you mess up and usually why. if not, simply get someone to film your shots so that you can review them. focus, focus focus!
This method was good for Howard Hill, Fred Bear, Fred Asbell and others. Fred Asbell wrote about it in his first book and everybody called him a quack and said that was the best way to get target panic. It makes sense to me for hunting and every day shooting, especially wing shooting and small game. It is the only way I shoot and I shoot well.
I agree. I’m 70. I developed a slight shake in hands, and broke my right shoulder bad. This technique works! Interesting enough, I’ve watched the Hill & Shults videos many times. Never caught on what they were saying. Now I get it. Thanks guys. 9:36
Firstly, let me say I have really enjoyed your conversational video style. Secondly, due to my vision decline with age, I gave up archery completely because I could not shoot my compound because I could not focus on target and still have enough clarity of vision to use my sight pins. Fast forward, 2 weeks ago, I watched Jeff Philips review a Sanlida hunting recurve kit bow for $99. I bought it the tried “learning” traditional archery. All contemporary teaching seems to point to 3 under and I could not get comfortable with it. Well, being of a more mature age, I thought back on the most successful hunting style archer heroes, Howard Hill, Fred Bear, Byron Ferguson,. They all shot split and mostly instinctive. Came across a John Schulz video describing and demonstrating Hill’s swing draw. In 2 weeks of practice, utilizing those techniques, I am grouping about 6 inches out to 25 yards and am in full addiction mode with archery again. All the above to say thank you for sincerity and style that helps to put an ol, codger out in the field on the whitetail trails again.

I shoot the same way. I anchor with my middle finger at the corner of my mouth. I don’t know if that’s correct but it works for me. Great stuff as usual. I have been trying get good with a trad bow for years. Recently, I have been drawing/shooting as you described in your video, not knowing it was a style with a name. Nice video. One of the issues with target panic is changes will solve the problem. For a short while. One sees this in golf, where guys will move from putter to putter, or style to style. Golf is worse than archery, because not even the weight of the shot is dictated, it is another mental load. There are three things to think about in loosing the shot: Concentrating on resisting the weight of the bow; releasing; aiming (whether with marks, or with "instinct}. Target panic arises when one tries to handle the different processes all at once. There is a reason why there are compound bows, release aids, and sights. Those of the "3 things". At least on targets, the release aid is a 100% solution, when used correctly. Proper sights can also be a 100% solution. Let-off usually is not a solution, but it is designed to help. The reality, we know it, and can prove it, is that "95%" of competitive shooters are overbowed, at the club level. Even with 80% let-off. Part of the problem is that we don't even know we are overbowed. If one has been shooting long enough to have things sorted out, but one gets TP, or shoots poorly, count on the fact one is overbowed. If one is built like Joe Rogan, maybe not. But used to know an olympic wrestler, and he was overbowed, it comes down to some underused muscles. If one is overbowed, there is no way to solve the problem. One can't control the weight of the bow. So there is no way to have only one point of focus.
Your form looks good but you need to get a stiffer glove with inserts Bateman or hill glove or crossover glove and get the target off the ground it needs to be shoulder height to work on form at 10 yards it’s the same if you turned around and shoot at a rabbit on the ground at 50 it’s the same shot just read Nate steen information .
All my long years of trad shooting it was instinctive style. Never did three under. Just like throwing a ball. Look, draw and let er rip. I believe it takes way more shooting time to maintain control so to hit something. I started in 1963 with a Bear recurve. Later made a bunch of self bows and then built laminated longbows.

The problem is that it isn't accurate for most people. I speak from 50 years experience, like a lot of us real trad guys. Wounding is the big secret of bowhunting, and probably long range rifle these days. There are some extraordinary Hill shooters, just as there is Tiger woods. Reality is nobody wins competitions with this style, and even the most advanced forms of barebow archery can't hit a goodies sized target in a shoot-off every time, at 20 yds. Watch the Lancaster shoot. It is frightening. The best shooters in America, some of whom are also very credible hunters, in the 7 ring, under the shoot pressure. By the way. I am super pro Hill style. In the late 90s, when there was a lot less content out there. I bought every available book, and video at the time, literally, and there were three archers who were top shooters, and had a style where the main points overlapped. Incredible, given how different they were. And all the other top shooters did not do what they did. They were Jay Barrs, Seoul gold medalist; Randy Ulmer, who was a top compound hand at the time, and Howard Hill. So I do believe there is a lot more to Hill Style than just the legend. He was dead on with a lot of the very specific micro elements of what makes a great shot. Obviously, some shooters are really good, and others, like me, struggle. But my point is that I am currently convinced that if one logs every arrow out of the bow, and doesn't just remember the wins, that with Instinctive, or Hill's style, are really gratifying, there is a dark side hiding in all of this. I remember making this long bowshot from 65 yards at a stump. I hit dead center, and it was that thing where from the moment I started drawing on the target I knew I had the shot. But I am not even a Lancaster level shooter, and those guys miss big all the time. But that shot was like crack, it is burned in my memory. I don't know why I can also miss from 16 yards. But so do the best shooters. By repute, Hill did not. That is why he is still remembered.
I've gotten back into bow hunting and I got an expensive compound bow. I'm gonna be going on a elk hunt this September well I had shoulder surgery a few years ago and it hurts to pull it back. Now I'm wanting to get a traditional bow for the elk hunt what traditional bow would you recommend for a elk hunt?
Most all out there are good these days. If I'm spending hard earned money on a hunt of a lifetime I'm not skimping on the bow. In my opinion it is very hard to beat a Black Widow, Bob Lee or a solid ILF rig for a recurve. For a longbow I like the Northern Mist

I use a dura glove if shooting a glove. I have a bad knuckle and have to shoot 3 under now because of it. I use an omnivore tab.
