The Saudi Allure | Kenyans continue to flock Saudi Arabia in search of work

  • As the country marks the 2023 Labour Day, an estimated 3m Kenyans continue to languish without jobs according to the latest Kenya national bureau of Statistics. That same report also revealed that around two-thirds of jobless Kenyans have even given up looking for work or starting businesses, disheartened by the limited employment prospects. With unemployment at an all-time high, the middle east offers much-needed job opportunities but on the flip side, the assessment of many domestic workers abroad is that of working conditions akin to modern-day slavery, abuse, and neglect abound especially in Saudi Arabia. But what choice do they have?

Getting a licence to operate these agencies is very hard. You know why? Because the businesses are owned by politicians and they don’t want competition. They are the ‘government’. They can easily negotiate better working conditions for workers, especially having a branch in the gulf so that it can save their workers when they are in trouble. The embassy too should take part in it. But who are we telling? Politicians are pure animals!
