  • "Had I not left Kenya for Saudi Arabia, my parents would still be poor in the village, my siblings would not have gone to good schools and we would not have built our parents their multimillion mansion, rentals, and an animal feed shop for my father"
Those are the words of 31-year-old Mary who has worked in Saudi for 8 years.
On this episode of Tales, she takes Lynn through her life in the Arab country, how she saved, the life of her other 3 siblings in the gulf, and why the media will not showcase successful stories of Kenyans in Saudi of Arabia

I was in Saudi Arabia for 8 years, as a houseboy/driver , with two other girls (Kenyan & Philipino). I saved up all my money and bought a small land in Thika, and built my 3bedroom house, and own a hardware in Thika town, with a few smokie/eggs stalls around the colleges and streets in Thika. I NEVER regret being in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately I can't say the same for my Kenyan female colleague. From my experience, people especially ladies, go there with little or no knowledge assuming very little and expecting too much, in little time without patience to understand what is expected of you and what you want from there. I know all employers are not the same, but even here in Kenya if I employ you and you keep dodging work and always on your phone 24/7 I will not be happy. The trick is to understand why you are there, and what's expected of you. You can NEVER compare Saudi Arabia with Dubai, where in Saudi they provide everything for you with your salary intact, while in Dubai you earn and pay up all your bills/basics with your salary. I owe my success to Saudi Arabia.

In saudi ladies go through a lot only when you don't work inside a house you'll see money or God provide you with loving bosses

I was in Gulf for almost 5 yrs. Went around the same time as she did in 2012...worked for 2 families and also decided to come back kupata mtoi. My take is, to listen to your gut feeling. Be prepared for anything. Lower your expectations and know your place as a shaghala. Kama hunyimwi chakula, hupigwi na hutusiwi (and by kutusiwa I mean by waajiri wako or watu wazima...kutusiwa kelba na watoi in gulf ni normal lol). Tulia ,ukishaa maliza mwaka kama umetuliaa mwarabu atakupenda!! I'm an introvert na kawaida waarabu hupenda mtu anashinda aki smile for no reason haha...so initially you can imagine I was nobody's cup of tea LOL. But by the time namaliza contract for both families kila mtu hadi nyanya zao walikua wanalilia kwa airport eti nimeenda. Don't expect executive treatment right off the gate but it gets better!!

Thank you so much Lynn for highlighting us on both sides about the life in gulf countries. Yea just like she said even in our own home countries there are both good and bad bosses. For those with good bosses let's learn how to appreciate them. Personally I'm a Ugandan working in AbuDhabi but if I'm to write about my boss I'd fill the whole book.
    1. Our salary is always cleared by 30th every month
    2. Our shopping is covered until she even buys us our local food sometimes
    3. We always have breaks during day to rest
    4. Once in a while she takes us to nice places all dressed well for lunch
5.She will never find you eating and tell you to get up and do something (she will be patient until you finish) and she will never let you do work while hungry even if you are out of home, you have to branch somewhere and take food...... etc.
Well falling out will be there as humans because even with our loved ones (families) tunakoseyana but what matters is "making up" and knowing no matter what, that's your boss.
Still those with bad bosses exist for people have different hearts.
