I really love this movie, especially the relationship between Jim and Silver. I love how Silver starts out as a villain before forming a real bond with Jim, and eventually chooses to save Jim over the treasure. I know Schaffrillas already made this point in his ranking videos, but it really is the best part.
Silver is the only person who ever believed in Jim’s future unconditionally, not even his mother did. That’s why he meant so much to Jim and why he let him go.
Can’t believe this otherwordly soundtrack has never been played live with an orchestra. And the short track where Jim is sitting on the Rooftop is so underrated.
I hear so many people say that they don't think Silver deserved the redeeming ending he got, and I think that's really unfair to say. One of the most telling things about his personality in my opinion is the way he treats Morph so well, and that fact that Morph stayed by his side all that time really shows that Silver has had the capacity for kindness in his heart all along.
So the film is basically a space version of Treasure Island. Also the animation for Long John Silver was ground breaking because his robotic arm was 3d while the rest of him was 2d. The opening narration was by Tony Jay who voiced Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame. The directors behind the film also directed: The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Princess and the Frog, and Moana.
I can't believe how many people think Silver didn't deserve a redemption... He's a classic "bad guy gone good" character. I love the relationship between him and Jim. The only reason he was bad in the first place is because he became obsessed with being rich and was willing to committ numerous crimes in order to get what he wanted. He obviously never felt loved until he met Jim. He probably didn't even realise he had any goodness left in his heart until he met Jim. Jim helped him become a better person and Silver in a way helped Jim from becoming more like him, as Jim seemed to be heading in a bad direction near the start of the movie... In my opinion, Silver deserves just as much of a redemption as Edward Norton's character in American History X.
Couldn’t have said it better myself! Though I think Silver’s desire for the treasure was different than the rest of the crew. Sure he wanted the riches, but finding that treasure was his lifelong dream. He even gave up body parts to see it through. And the fact he gave Jim some of the little treasure he managed to snag proves it wasn’t really about money, just seeing a dream come to fruition. I’d say Silver is my favorite character in the movie. His complexity is a marvel.
Silver successfully turned a juvenile delinquent into an aspiring young man with a bright future. And at the same time, Jim pushed silver to let go of his obsession and care about somebody else for once.
The father-son narrative of this movie is what really sells it for me and Jim's theme has a very special way of resonating with my life experiences so I definitely have a biased for this unique movie. I am just glad it was able to be made despite all its hardships.
That scene of Arrow falling used to give me nightmares as a kid. Regardless, it used to be and still is one of my favourites. The story, animation, soundtrack, the dynamic between Silver and Jim..everything is so good. Shame it didn't do well (same with Meet the Robinsons), such good underrated movies.
What I like about silver is he isn’t a traditional twist villain. The audience knew his intentions(unlike Frozen and Zootopia, etc)before it is revealed to the protagonist which doesn’t happen lately. His inner conflict before he spares and saves Jim and add to that he has a believable redemption arc and the bond between Jim and silver was one of the highlights of the movie
Thank you, Tim! Hope you loved Jim’s story! The mix of 2d and 3d was so well executed. The father/son dynamic of him and Silver, the adventure, the music, everything is supreme and lord knows why it didn’t become a hit. I blame timing because the movie was too good. I was still a toddler when it came out but I had the video tape and later got the Blu-ray. It’s a staple favorite of mine ❤
The movie didn't become a hit because disney never wanted to make this movie in the first place, but it was a passion project that the directors wanted to make and they made a deal that after 5 movie they would be allowed to make this movie. Disney tried to bury this movie with a bad trailer that litteraly told you everything about it, and they released this movie the same time as, harry potter and the chamber of secrets, the santa clause 2, the james bond film "die another day" and 8 mile. This movie didn't stand a chance. And at the the time it was the most expensive disney animated film to make at 140 million.
@@K-wars I agree, that's why I said I blame timing. It was only unsuccessful because it wasn't truly supported. I feel the same thing about Atlantis the lost empire.
People don't give this movie enough credit. It has great memories for me as a kid. I remember when it came out and every kid wanted a solar surfer. Not to mention the video game was really fun. I know it's been years but I still wish they make a sequel with Jim a captain of his own ship.
This is the prime example of why passion projects are always worth the time to find; they may not be as polished but they have impressive creativity and attention to detail, on a level that the massively promoted panderings rarely match. This is one of the few with such prominent and distinctive implementation of 2d hand drawn combined with 3d computer generated, to portray that sometimes things will be our of your control and still bite you from behind, but to keep your chin up and stick with what you believe in for the better anyway, and sadly one of the last to show how characters are rarely black and white but can still change by influencing one-another.
Did you know that Silver is a combination of 2D and 3D animations? They had to test how Silver's arm would see, and the only pirate character they had at hand for the test was Captain Hook from Peter Pan, so in Disney's archives exists a cyborg Hook.
5:39 The thing is I don't think she really recovered either. I mean, her husband left her with a son to raise and a business to run on his own. But she's barely had time to grieve her loss as much as she would like because she's had to focus on keeping the business afloat so that her son has a place to live with clothes on his back and food on his plate. But she's hurting from how his father treated her same as Jim is. They're both dealing with it badly and can't talk to each other about it. And I think she's also worried on some level that if Jim just keeps doing whatever he feels like and never applies himself to anything or takes responsibility for anything then he might end up doing what his father did to someone else
If I remember correctly, Treasure Planet came out at the same time as Harry Potter. Considering HP was so popular, it makes sense that TP would flop. I think if it hadn’t been for that, it might have done ok. I love this movie along with Atlantis. I think Jim’s story and actions are so relatable for many young teens, which is why I love this film. And though you only see his mom briefly, she’s also relatable for parents with her acknowledgment of her son being intelligent and kind but clearly struggling with something.
It also might have done better if it had waited a year after Pirates of the Caribbean, because the swashbuckling/pirate genre was dying out before that movie strung it back up.
The Disney basically sabotaged this movie during its release to ensure it would bombed in box office. That way they would have an excuse to finally close their 2D department to avoid paying too much taxes for that, and focus on 3D animated features from now then. No confirmation, obviously. But there are a lot of clues to support this was the case.
Watch Atlantis: The Lost Empire, another underrated Disney movie. I love them both for their animation and complex characters, especially with John Silver in this film
I'm honored to have seen this movie on the big screen back when it originally came out in November 2002. I was 10. Also, Treasure Planet is the third time Disney has done a movie inspired from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The first time was a live action movie from 1950, and the second time was in 1995 when they worked with The Jim Henson Company on Muppet Treasure Island.
The strength of this Disney is also that the 'bad guy' is a grey character, between the good and the bad, even up to his name Silver, and after having seen the film several times we love the character and the relationship between them AND the theme of the soundtrack for their relation it's beyond beautiful
I love Treasure Planet, the animation was so good and I really love Silver's character in this film! Such an underrated gem alongside with films such as Brother Bear, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Disney's Dinosaur! Loved the reaction Timothee!
Oh my god! Treasure Planet was one of my favorites back in the early 2000s!!! And I always thought it was pretty clever of Disney to turn the classic novel, Treasure Island, into a sci-fi movie!
“So underrated” is right! Treasure Planet is one of the finest Disney films I’ve seen in the Post-Renaissance era. I love the relationship between Jim Hawkins and Silver. They are the heart and soul of the film imo, as they share the most heartwarming moments of the story.
A great underrated classic that Disney intentionally botched the marketing for. There were plans for a sequel with Willem Dafoe in it! I highly recommend checking out CinemaWins video Everything Great About Treasure Planet.
One of the best movies Disney made and I remember watching this multiple times and the soundtrack is just amazing. Also the intro bit on his 'hover board' is cool.
1:17, notice he said The Etherium. Not space, the Etherium. And it’s something different from what we would call space considering there is wind in it.
Ah, this kicks right in my childhood! I remember me and my siblings role playing these characters! Thanks for reminding me about those times, Tim! For real, one of the best childhood memories I have!
I loved this movie. I loved the video game, "Battle at Procyon". Also, one of my favorite quotes from a Disney Animated Movie... "Ohhh...BLAST ME FOR A FOOL!"
0:05 This movie was like Atlantis in that it was a passion project throughout the Disney Renaissance by a couple guys on the Disney staff, but the higher ups didn't want it to happen. It eventually got made, but then the higher ups sabotaged its success by marketing it badly (putting spoilers in the trailer to make the movie seem like it had a different quality than it actually does), and premiering it only a week after Harry Potter 2. What does drag this movie down otherwise, though, is probably mainly BEN...
Depending on how you look at this movie, they made a lot of mistakes with it, but also did a lot of things right. The novel it is based on is rather dry to read, which is owned to the time it was written. This is where they did right the most things when adapting it. The changes did enhance the characters a lot while they kept most of the original plot. I won't go into the negatives, because there is one thing that is more important they did right that not just balances out the bad, but surpasses that, it is fun to watch and has something I'm missing these days, the feeling of experiencing an adventure. It doesn't matter if can you see partially what is coming like the booby trap in the end, you are in with the characters. For example, you feel with Silver when he lets go of the treasure. No matter what you think of him, you know what he is giving up and in my opinion, that's one of the three moments where he redeems himself at least do far that he earns a get out of jail card this once. The other two points? When he gets the captain to turn the ship around and trust Jim and in the end when he gives Jim the little treasure he got. True, he might still have some in that coat of his, but at least he makes up for burning down Jim's home. Just because he's a bad guy, doesn't mean he is a bad guy.
You should definitely check out "Everything Great About Treasure Planet". One thing I never noticed until the video said it was how the "jungle"of Treasure Planet was mold grown on the mechanism.
Never understood why this movie didn't do better; it was a great film. Very well-done story, animation, music, and voice acting by the cast. I even liked the video game that came out with it; although, I wasn't a fan of the racing parts. I watched this with my nephew; when he was young, and I will still watch it today, if I get the change.
Omg I can't believe you finally got to this movie. This was probably my favorite Disney movie when I was little. Idk why but it felt so wondrous with the art and the music combined. I even got the Playstation2 game and loved that also. The whole solar surfing thing looked like the funnest thing to do ever as a kid. I remember I loved the music videos and sound track also. Shame how it was received so poorly. I remember I would watch it often.
another underrated gem is "Spirit: Stallion of the Cinnaron" (2002) which has a fantastic soundtrack, beautifully illustrated scenery and genuinely shows the colonisation of the "wild west" through non-human eyes. a huge childhood favourite
39:38 And that's why he took Ben's mind - so that nobody could be warned about it, find a way to miss the booby trap or find a way to disarm the booby trap and steal what to him was HIS treasure.
I love this movie, and the movie didn't become a hit because disney never wanted to make this movie in the first place, but it was a passion project that the directors wanted to make and they made a deal that after 5 movie they would be allowed to make this movie. This movie didn't stand a chance. And at the the time it was the most expensive disney animated film to make at 140 million. And it made 109 million in the box office
Ron Clements and John Musker (some of the key contributors to the Disney Renaissance) wanted to make this long before it was made. It was a project they wanted to do and actually pitched it the same time they pitched the little mermaid. The studio thought that it wasn’t a good idea but TLM did fantastic! They asked again for their passion project but the studio said no. They pitched Aladdin and BAM💥 another hit! They pitched Treasure Planet again. Denied🙅🏻♀️ Studio told them FINE you give us one more good film, and we’ll do it. And then we got the zero to hero, Hercules. Now the studio HAD to hold up their end of the deal. They got to make their passion piece and boy you can tell the passion! I LOVED this movie and never knew why (as a kid) people didn’t love it more but looking back, it wasn’t very well promoted. Kinda like the studio did the bare minimum to keep some of their most important creators happy to keep them producing more bangers (Clements and Musker later crunk out The Princess and the Frog and Moana) It’s like the male centered films (IMO) don’t get as much recognition and princess films and it’s just sad because this film is amazing ❤
Some of the best animated movies are kind of hidden. The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado. Some of my favorites. Also this is such a great take on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
This movie has been in my top 3 Disney movies ever since I first saw it like 20 years ago. Jim's abandonment issues with his father is something I really connected with and could relate to. Also, Silvers absolutely deserved his redemption. In the end he followed his heart and forsook the treasure he had spent a lifetime to get in order to save Jim's life. He earned that.
Disney messed up not promoting this movie in the advertisement. It has everything a kid would want. Pirates, surfing on hoverboards, treasure, adventure, flying ships, and even a relatable protagonist (seriously, how many Disney protagonists were just straight up abandoned by their father instead of the parent being dead?!). This could have been a hit with the audience if they had been willing to promote it.
15:48 Little tip for snooping, don't make it obvious that you're observing anyone or asking questions. You're more likely to find out things when people can't see you or don't think you understand what's going on
I know this disney movie is unpopular but treasure plant is my favorite underrated movie it was a 10 out of 10 for me i gave it my own rating it was the best amazing movie to me i love everything about this movie even the robot character and the ending too i think the ending wasn't creepy to me at all in my honest unpopular opinion
i love how this disney film is really a directorial passion project that is truly unique to the media it belongs, i really do love this film, not a huge disney watcher in general but this film just does it
Right next to Atlantis, Treasure Planet is another Disney animated flick I enjoy watching back-to-back. I guess it has more to do with the sci-fi themes and not about being musicals as the studio is best known for. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins is an awesome choice on the casting director’s part.
Definitely Treasure Planet is a masterpiece of animation and how bad it was its underrated in its time we never had that sequel planned why this world had so much potential
Back in the 1700’s lots of fathers left their family behind to try to make money at sea. Many never returned, so it’s not crazy this happened to Jim. Also if you notice they don’t show his fathers face. I assume after so many years and rarely seeing him before he left, he no longer remembers what his face even looks like. Back then they didn’t have photos so unless someone had a drawing/painting of him there would be nothing that showed what his face looked like.
Treasure Planet, an updated version of a classic book that DOESN'T get enough love & out of anything is deserving of a sequel, tv show & a live action remake! I'm serious look up the plans for the original planned sequel & some of the fanfiction that show how much this movie is loved. Also Long John Silver wasn't blowing smoke to Jim. You can tell because when he gave Jim that speech after Mr. Arrow's death he didn't call him Jim or Jimbo it was "Now you listen to me JAMES HAWKINS" he's addressing him by his name sternly like a father who's trying to uplift his son would
This movie is a hidden gem of Disney. The story, the ambient, the character development, THE ANIMATION. The only problem that this movie had was getting out at the wrong time.
Tresure planete was my favorite movie when i was a kid, I just absolutely love the world around it, it was the fuse of my favorite genra, scifi and pirate, even today I don’t nderstand why this movie is not in the top of disney
Ah, this was when 2D animated movies started to fall out of favor in cinemas(it started with 1999's Tarzan). Until Disney said "f*** it, no more 2D movies" after Princess & the Frog's middling performance, with the final nail in the coffin being Tangled's success. It mostly has to do with 2D requiring more work to animate(like stop motion animation) while with 3D you basically played with digital puppets(like stop motion too, but more convenient). The story itself is a sci-fi adaptation of Treasure Island, I've never watched any of its more grounded adaptation(it's a popular novel) but I know Christian Bale starred in one in his teens.
I think Brave Little Toaster is incredibly underrated, and it's my favorite animated movie of all time. Would love to see you review this one. But yes, this movie is truly amazing as well. Oh, and if you like this movie, you'll probably really like Titan A.E. as well. It came out in the year 2000 actually. It has very similar vibes to this one, and also features a young adult going to space as a main character, but it's a completely different story. I hope you'll review both of these!
Narrator is done by Frollo's voice actor Tony Lee Nathaniel Flint is voiced by Peter Cullen posthumously (side note Dooku was voiced by Nicholas "Nick" Cortes but when Episodes 2 Clone Wars & 3 came out in 2002, 2008 & 2005 2 actors are chosen to play as Dooku / Lord Tyrannus Chris Frank Carandini Lee which Matt used to describe the character male actor then Corey Burton impersonating Chris Frank Carandini Lee and voicing Lee Van Cleef of Star Wars Cad Bane which Boba trained in the new Clone Wars only to be killed using a Fijian war club in Boba Fett's Book) Niles Doppler is voiced by David Pierce Hyde and Alexander changed to Amelia Smollett is voiced by Sybil Trelawney Lady Emma Thompson who also voiced in Brave as Queen Elinor both in bear form when fighting a crazed death bear & her human form while Ben the robot is voiced by Martin Short who later played another character Jack Frost in Santa Clause 3 Escaped Clause around 2006.
Great reaction Timothee! Definitely one of my favorite Disney films. For underrated animation I’d recommend Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Cats Don’t Dance, The Triplets of Belleville, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Duck Tales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, Green Lantern: First Flight, Wolf Walkers, Superman vs the Elite and, if you can find it, Marcoss: Do You Remember Love?
When Disney wants us to watch something, they'll smother us to death with marketing But when they don't want us to watch something, they won't even bother to promote it
Love this movie, same with Atlantis the lost Empire and enjoyed your reaction to it. Don’t know if others have mentioned it but did you notice the light in Silver’s eye changes based on his mood? It turns red when he’s angry and pure white when he’s excited 🙂

Thanks for watching!
Oh my god! Treasure Planet was one of my favorites back in the early 2000s!!! And I always thought it was pretty clever of Disney to turn the classic novel, Treasure Island, into a sci-fi movie!
This reaction was quite unexpected. This movie is absolutely an underrated gem and one of my favorite movies of all time.
20:20 when a star goes supernova, typically that means it just died and EXPLODED!!! 🤯
23:36 Every child has to hear those words... ;-)
If positive masculinity was a movie, it would be this one.
9:21, well, it’s based on a book called Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson but they decided to give it a science fiction twist
“So underrated” is right! Treasure Planet is one of the finest Disney films I’ve seen in the Post-Renaissance era. I love the relationship between Jim Hawkins and Silver. They are the heart and soul of the film imo, as they share the most heartwarming moments of the story.
"Share a little of treasure" ? really you don't know how pirates think xD
I really wish this movie got more attention, it’s an absolute masterpiece and shaped my childhood. I wanted to be like Jim so bad as a kid!!
Ah, this kicks right in my childhood! I remember me and my siblings role playing these characters! Thanks for reminding me about those times, Tim! For real, one of the best childhood memories I have!
2:06 Did anyone notice Stitch on the shelf?!!?!?!?!!?
Fun fact the part where Jim and Silver were calling for Morph was improvised along with "go Delbert go Delbert"
I loved this movie.
I loved the video game, "Battle at Procyon".
Also, one of my favorite quotes from a Disney Animated Movie...
"Ohhh...BLAST ME FOR A FOOL!"
This movie is criminally underrated
One thing I never noticed until the video said it was how the "jungle"of Treasure Planet was mold grown on the mechanism.
fun fact: their was supposed to be two more treasure planet movies but Disney decided to scrap them
I still hope for STAR TREK reactions. 🖖🙂
Not to mention the best and most competent depiction of a cat girl of the early noughties.
Denied🙅🏻♀️
Studio told them FINE you give us one more good film, and we’ll do it. Kinda like the studio did the bare minimum to keep some of their most important creators happy to keep them producing more bangers (Clements and Musker later crunk out The Princess and the Frog and Moana)
It’s like the male centered films (IMO) don’t get as much recognition and princess films and it’s just sad because this film is amazing ❤
9:46 Plus, R.S.L. legacy - Robert Louis Stevenson Legacy. Nice other little reference to the author.
15:48 Little tip for snooping, don't make it obvious that you're observing anyone or asking questions. You're more likely to find out things when people can't see you or don't think you understand what's going on
27:30-27:40 that was actually all improved by Jim and The Cyborg’s Voice Actors.
1:11 Love the violin in the start - feels sort of Scottish, good call back to Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote the original 'Treasure Island'.
Highly recommend: “Titan A.E.” Titan A.E. movie is not like other animated movies. It’s very popular since 2000
46:48 "Jimbo, remember who you are"
For me the holly trinity of underrated animations are Titan AE, Atlantis and Treasure planet. Very similar, very beautiful. And very underrated.
Definitely Treasure Planet is a masterpiece of animation and how bad it was its underrated in its time we never had that sequel planned why this world had so much potential
Dude, this is my favorite movie. Thanks for reaching
Treasure planet was and always will be One of my Favorite Childhood Disney Animated Movie's Ever Made This and BOLT
I get what you’re saying, but this is the future.
They never show hi father’s face because his father never was there it’s symbolic
Also Jim’s dad didn’t die at sea, he abandoned the family.
I didn’t mean he died, just said that many who did leave in real life died
I have loved this movie since I was a toddler and I still do, Jim is still my favorite 🤩
I really love the Treasure planet, because all of characters are very amazing.
Me too.
A real favorite of my daughters and i. A genuinely underappreciated and underrated classic.
It’s one of my faves to be honest. However if there was ever a Disney film that needed a live action adaptation- it’s this one!
Wait it's Disney's biggest flop????? It's my all time favorite movie.
And you nailed it, the animation is exactly the same they used in Tarzan, especially the CGI
Tresure planete was my favorite movie when i was a kid, I just absolutely love the world around it, it was the fuse of my favorite genra, scifi and pirate, even today I don’t nderstand why this movie is not in the top of disney
I hate how this is considered “Disney’s Biggest Mistake”
I mean i think a strange world now is even more
I would look at the local Blind Pew. According to rumors, in the unreleased sequel, the main antagonist was supposed to be voiced by Willem Dafoe.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I'm sure it is for many others too
Ah, this was when 2D animated movies started to fall out of favor in cinemas(it started with 1999's Tarzan).
Treasure, Atlantis The Lost Empire and Brother Bear really deserved better than what they got 😭😭😭😭
The actress that voices the Mom also Voices Andys mom in Toy Story and is Sheldon's mom in big bang theory
And the Black Cauldron too !
Speaking of underrated animated films, I think some of us are still waiting for you to do a reaction to Brother Bear
Yes it’s comin this summer
@@TimotheeReacts Cool. And speaking of summer, my birthday’s in the summer
Keep your eyes peeled, Tim, because this year, Disney is returning to the 2D/3D mix thing with their upcoming movie “Wish”.
ahh nice!!
@@TimotheeReacts Yeah
Everyone that watches this movie either has a crush on Jim or his mom, and i agree with that
I can sing that full song. It's so good. I'm still here is one of my favorites and the movie almost makes me cry there
When Disney wants us to watch something, they'll smother us to death with marketing
But when they don't want us to watch something, they won't even bother to promote it
Also lines that got removed from the final cut reveal Delbert is the one who gave birth to his and Amelia's kids
Amelia was supposed to be looking at blood on her hand when she got hurt, but that was removed too.
Love this movie, same with Atlantis the lost Empire and enjoyed your reaction to it. Don’t know if others have mentioned it but did you notice the light in Silver’s eye changes based on his mood? It turns red when he’s angry and pure white when he’s excited 🙂
We had a dvd of this movie and we had a lot of fun watching it back then. I'm glad a lot of people still watch this cause I was surprised it's not as popular as other disney films.
