It’s difficult to explain to someone who doesn’t know John Farnham, just what he means to Australians. The thing you have to understand is that John has been around since the 60s and in any entertainer’s career, he’s had his highs and lows. Apart from the importance of the message in the song, this was John’s comeback song. Everything was riding on this song and album. His manager mortgaged his home to finance the album. So you see, it’s much more than just the song. I’ve seen him live a couple of times, and all I can say is it’s an amazing experience. In time, you’ll come to understand why he’s so treasured here in Australia.

This song is a call to arms. Time for all of us to stand up and say ENOUGH. It is an anthem. His manager mortgaged his house to pay for this song. John's career had tanked until this song. It is and will always be number 1. We love our Farnsy (John Farnham) and Barnsey (Jimmy Barnes). Nobody messes with them. They are our treasures. We are fiercely protective of them.

As an aussie John is a national treasure so some people can get a little protective of him. John is one of those rare types who simply sounds better live then in a studio. I would suggest reacting to "Help live" and "When something is wrong with my baby"

@@ianmontgomery7534 There are always at least 2 sides to everything recording.
The artists are almost always insignificant to the other side..... engineers, producer (s), managers, record company and Boss money man.
It is rare for any talented POP artist to be happy with a recording, but they have to say it is perfect or be black listed.

It’s what we call a “pub anthem” not a national anthem. And the message of the song is deeply embedded in the Aussie psyche, we won’t shut up even when we’re told we should. When we sing this together it bonds us with the ethos of not staying silent. Don’t let the Aussie patriotism get you down. Just be you.

What you have to understand about this song is the whole package. It is sung by a singer who can truly be called ‘The Voice’ and is delivered with such energy, strength and passion. He gives 150% in every single performance - he NEVER misses connecting with his audience, and we adore him for that and those golden vocal chords of his. The song’s message is potent - the simplicity of its structure invites you to get more and more involved with that chorus. In every live performance of the song, John gets the audience more and more into it. Then, there is the back story of the whole album - the struggle that John had at the time, though why on earth someone with such an incredible voice should ever have had the career lows that he did, is hard to understand. John Farnham IS Australian - where he was born has nothing to do with his identity. He loves the country, and we love him. There will never be another like him. He is a pure entertainer and a pure singer. No effects needed, just give him a stage, a band and an audience and watch magic happen.

He's an icon here in Australia and very much loved, a very genuine person with a great sense of humour
He's in his 70s now and can still perform as he has through his career.
You need to check out which I think is in this concert, HELP !!! It's magnificent, it will blow your mind.

It's just a song about joining together and speaking up against violence, repression, racism and war.
Yes it's a simple song but a meaningful one, so having the correct "composition" doesn't matter one bit.
I wouldn't call it a defacto "national anthem" (not literally a national anthem, but in a way that American pie is kinda the US's defacto national anthem" there are other songs that qualify more for that.
You being a smart arse about him not naturalising till the 80's is nothing unusual because Australia and the UK have always been close and until the 80's it wasn't important to do anything about citizenship. He has lived in Australia since he was ten and it has been his home ever since then.
Keep in mind that the US is the weird one in the world when it comes to things like that...even idiots saying things like Canada isn't a real country or why does Australia have the queen on their money etc. etc. This is how many ex colonial countries do things, and they have usually reaaly good close ties to the UK...back in the 60's it was almost the same thing being Australia or British.
When it became more important and national pride grew in the 70's and 80's many people chose to become a citizen.

The thing about this song… it doesn’t matter who wrote it or that it has 2 chorus etc… it has a strong message to not give up and the feeling through Johns delivery of this song hit people in their soul… that’s what we mean when we say a national anthem… this song hits us deeply delivered by a voice only John can deliver…. And he is so much more powerful live… even now in his 70s…

John Farnham turned down We Built This City…. And recorded You’re The Voice instead.
For the record… there is no real benefit for Brits or Kiwis to take Australian Citizenship due to the close relationship the countries have. He came here as a kid and grew up here, that makes him (and thousands of others) Aussies.

You just got to listen to his voice, there's nothing English about it, he's as Aussie as they come. Interesting story, when he was going to be given the Australian of the year award it was discovered he was never naturalised and they had to rush his naturalisation in the day of the award ceremony, from memory. But, you're right, unless you want to vote or travel on an Australian passport there's no real reason to naturalise.

We Aussies are glad that you had the courage to come back and try again with Farnsey. You were so apologetic I was thinking you were going to slide into this video and turn up in the Melbourne Symphony orchestra crying and playing a violin! The first video of John is dated and, to me, doesn't capture the essence of this man and his incredible talent, which you will come to understand as you become more familiar with him. And I really hope that you do! We would love to see you react to more of John Farnham. LIVE LIVE LIVE. You'll have many followers. John has an amazing charisma and infectious positive energy and takes his audience with him all the way. We love him. He is so appreciative of his audience and shows respect, except to his mother-in-law - a running joke. He is a funny man. He gives praise and recognition to his band members and backing vocalists. He's such a good man. He had a bad run for a while in his career but had the tenacity to "hang in there" and ended up with the best selling albums in Oz. So, please react to more of our beloved John Farnham, as you will have many songs to choose from, but make sure that the video is of a LIVE performance.

Farnham's popularity is how he is the embodiment of Australia. Australia is made up of many cultures. We are a melting pot of all those many voices. We know how to laugh at ourselves, how to stay down to earth, how to not give up, how to be friendly and so much more. Farnham was all that from day dot. It wasn't about whether he was naturalised at the time of not. He was a hard working plumbers apprentice when he got his shot. His first attempt gave him some success but fizzled and instead of giving up he tried again and when he did he found his voice and it was a voice we all resonated with. And that is why everyone loves this song and what it means and how it unites us

    Hi Mike :)
Every country has it’s people who over-react. We Aussies are no different. Well explained and well said. Well done for doing your research on John Farnham, who never sought international fame, but he is probably one of the greatest singers on the planet. He’s now 72 and can still belt the same way.
John considers himself Australian, and was Australian of the year about 30yrs ago. Think of the biggest American singer you can think of, and that’s John Farnham to Australians. He is phenomenal with No 1 hits in each of 5 successive decades. He would arguably be Australia’s greatest treasure. There are 26 million people in Australia and John and about 4 million attendences at his concerts over the decades. He can bend over and shake hands with someone at the edge of the stage and continue belting those high notes.
There are songs that are ‘anthems’. And this is one of ours :)

Thank you for your honesty. ❤ John was so much more live, actually he was in his element live! We gave him our love, so he gave as twice as much back. John may have been born in England, but has been in the Australian music industry since the 1960’s and gave up his chance at international superstardom to stay in Australia with his family, so we love him and protect him beyond all other artists! This song is iconic to Australia and the lyrics are as relevant today as they were back in 1986 when the song was released.

Kudos for owning your reaction. In truth, not every person is going to like the same things. But, to your credit, you now know what we Aussies are fortunate to understand. John Farnham, at his core, is an entertainer, whose greatest 'talent' is his connection to his audience. He's a great singer, songwriter, and a generous performer (watch him fanboi singing with Tom Jones 😁). But we remember the concerts we saw, as much as the tapes, records and CDs we bought.
It's a little earlier, but this is a full live concert for Expo '88 in Brisbane. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it.

The song was good enough for Celine Dion to cover and use in her Las Vegas concerts and acknowledge him. She even visited Australia in 2018 and sang it with John Farnham. The Chorus is generally extended in concerts for the atmosphere and and performance because the crowd goes off and takes over singing it.

This is my first reaction of yours. Regarding the original video, even Richard Marx joked it wasn’t the best, but that the song and John were incredible, and he became a fan. People forget John had no money at the time and his manager (RIP) mortgaged his house to make the album happen. This song and John’s comeback, along with all the other Aussie bands hitting the charts in this era, have become part of Aussie folklore. So although i haven’t seen this other reaction of yours, it touched a nerve and sorry Aussies are sensitive. You seem really genuine - best wishes! ps John still rocks! :)

In Australia you don't need to be naturalised to be considered Australian. I was born in England got naturalised at 18. I felt I was accepted as Australian all the years leading up to my naturalisation. You just need to have a love for the country and the way of life and the people. John Farnham is a very big part of our way of life. We have seen him grow from a shy singing teenager to someone who commands respect the second he is on stage. You don't have to be born in Australia or even be a citizen to call yourself Australian. You just have to consider Australia home. A quarter of the population was born overseas, including Russell Crowe, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Newton-John - all proud to call themselves Australian - and two recent prime ministers. Half of all Australians have a parent or grandparent born overseas. John Farnham has been part of Australian life since his first hit in the 60s. He turns up to help us celebrate in good times and to cheer us up in bad times. Unsurprisingly, some people are a bit over-protective of him.

Looking back at my video with the studio version of the song, I was honest, but it does make me cringe now that I have ' seen the light ' . I will do better in the future and I will stop beating myself up, but first impressions are important and I am so grateful that my viewers have been giving me a second chance. John is also cheeky and hilarious so a John Farnham concert was also a comedy concert! He is as genuine as they come, and truly nice guy, a family man, and always has the best musicians and backing singers working with him for many years. You won’t regret going down the John Farnham rabbit-hole. He was in a couple of musicals when he was ypung and played Jesus in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. John is now 72.

ps i see your first reaction to this song was about two weeks ago - that might explain why some people were annoyed because his manager Glenn Wheatley passed away due to covid complications at this time..you weren’t to know, but it was in all the media and it was a sad week for the local music industry

Farnsie in studio is brilliant. Farnsie LIVE is simply Phenomenal!
His vocal range skill performance artistry stage presence - all next level. And a great songwriter too. ( see 'Burn For You" - a song he wrote for his wife while missing her out on the road for long stretches - touring }And a thoroughly decent down to earth bloke without an ounce of 'star ego'. Hard NOT to Love our John.👍

Oops! My first visit to this channel and it feels like I’ve walked into an awkward situation. Aussie here- I agree the lyrics to this song are repetitive and I can see the official video might feel a bit tame however, I feel if you explore Farnsey you’ll probably end up by agreeing with a lot of other reactors that he is in fact one of the GOATs of all time, worldwide. He is 100% a performer, 100% a professional, as a singer he never misses a note, he can sing anything from hard rock to opera or Broadway and he is 100% humble and a larrikin. We all stuff up at times. I know I do more than my fair share of stuff ups. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve subscribed. 🙂

It’s the message in the lyrics not the complexity of the composition that resonates so deeply with Australians. Like any country in the world, We have a history that has the proudest and the darkest elements to it. This song contains a profound message! Do yourself a favour and listen to his live performance of “In days to come”.

Wow so glad that you didn't run and hide after the response to your first reaction to the studio version of this song. Instead you reassessed and gave such a heartfelt, sincere and contrite apology (well explanation of your reaction). This is a simple but magical song with a good message: we are all loved ones and have the power to make a difference! And tbh I cringe at the video clip also, especially Rambo on guitar but that is also part of the charm. Kudos to you for having the fortitude to be accountable and for giving John another go. Everyone wins, you discover an amazing talent and we get to see an honest reactor that is willing to go that extra mile. I have subbed and looking forward to more videos from you.
After seeing the first Your the Voice and the Midnight Oil Beds are Burning videos I had no problem with you not liking them just that it seemed like you were mocking them without understanding them. But after seeing you do this video and also Help, I can see your passion and willingness to learn and not change but adjust your delivery. Now this message is longer than your apology so I will say thanks and give you a virtual hug(you did appear a little shaken and understandably so).

As an Aussie, and a huge JF fan for all of my life, it actually guts me that you were attacked and felt like you had to defend yourself. You simply reacted to something you watched, at the face value of that thing. It was honest, and I appreciated your thoughts even though you didn't rate the song initially (to be fair, the video version just isn't as good as live) - but for anybody who claimed you 'ostracized' an entire country because you didn't like a song is RIDICULOUS. You keep doing you man, don't for a second think you did something wrong.

As far as John having a powerful voice you need only look at his microphone action. On average he holds it about 2/3 inches away from his face and when he powers up it is nearly a foot away and yet you can still hear all the power he has at his disposal at that distance. It's truly amazing.

This song speaks to the very core of every Australian. It is as well known, and often better respected than the actual Australian National Anthem.
It is very much the foundation of the Australian spirit - fearlessness, mateship, and freedom.
In addition, John is a spectacular performer, and incredible voice. A voice that, today, you'd probably think has been digitally processed to get that level of quality. Until you hear him live. He really is *that* good.

BTW I was remembering my own experience of a John Farnham concert.
In the 80's Concert halls, there was no such thing as robotic spotlights or they were in their infancy weren't they, and the Spots were operated by people, no toilet break for 2 hours.
The Spots are heavy, Hot AND the poor people are copping the rising heat from every person in the concert, the humidity and lack of oxygen..
    VERY Respectful to those people!👍👍

Hey Big Guy - on behalf of Farnsey fans, thank you for revisiting this song. He's always top value live. You also did a good job fixing your mic balance. Worthwhile watching "Help" from the same concert...it's a world away from The Beatles' version. He may have come out from Pommyland as a tadpole but thrived in Aussie conditions, became one of the blokes, did the hard yards in pubs and clubs and remained down to earth regardless of success. He always treated his band and his audience with respect and left nothing in the tank.

Ok…. This song was written by 4 British songwriters during protests in London in 1985, protests happening at the time promoting nuclear disarmourment…. One of the writers, when hearing John Farnham was interested in this song, was actually against him recording it as this songwriter had lived in Australia during the 1960’s and 70’s and remembered him as ‘Johnny Farnham’ a cabaret style singer teen idol who sung bubblegum type music like ‘Sadie the cleaning lady….. little did he know, ‘Johnny’ was planning a comeback, way beyond anyone’s wildest imagination…..
John is a humble man and loves entertaining…. He just was unhappy with the work he was given prior to recording this song and the album whispering jack…. This song brought him the success he so rightfully deserved at a time when his family was nearly destitute….. people behind him including his dear manager put in and mortgaged their own house to pay for the album and everyone involved could have lost everything….. radio stations refused to play this song until 1 single Sydney station did eventually play it, then the requests became so overwhelming other stations were forced to play it because his voice is amazing and the message in this song is so so important, even today
Glad you eventually enjoyed the song though 😁

This song is not Australia's National Anthem, but is undeniably An Anthem of Australia!
Let me help you understand our cultural differences.
This song talks of speaking out against violence, about reconciliation, and making peace:
    "We're all someone's daughter
    We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?"
The USA national anthem enshrines your predication with violence and making war which is the very core of your culture:
"And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there."
    Do you get it now?

As an older Australian, who lived through the rise of artists like John Farnham, the Seekers and many others, I would just like to make a couple of observations. (1) we are living in an age when people who grew up in the past two to three generations have been taught that their feelings were pretty much the most important influence in their lives The thing that I learnt in the past 60-70 years is that any time that you make decisions, and judgements, based on your feelings, then you will be wrong in about 90-99% of the times. Feelings are nice, but they are transient and can change in an instant. (2) I realise that many, if not most, Australian artists are not known overseas. That"s just a fact that we live with. That some of our artists are being belatedly being recognised though podcasts such as yours is great , and we should welcome this. It is because of the social media that this is coming about. .It is a pity that is occurring so close to the end of these artists careers, But that is life. We are a long way from the countries in the northern hemisphere. Stop beating yourself over the head because some people are controlled by their feelings, and not by logical thinkiing.

Dude relax!!!...All cool mate. Firstly, first time viewer from Adelaide, South Australia (in the middle, down the bottom). Whats your name bro? Im Matt..
John started as a 18 year old here in my home town back in the 60s. (yes, he is that old!)
Happy you are discovering Aussie music!!! Johns a legend, this song is "kinda" the National Anthem, like Bruce's "Born to Run" etc is to Americans. Just inspiring..
    Enjoy..
You cant offend an Aussie! But we just take our Aussie music very seriously!! Its different to any kind of music in the World.. We also have some amazing "Rock" bands, like AC/DC, The Angels (called Angel City in the USA) and Cold Chisel. John also sings a Cold Chisel song called "When the War is Over", just a beautiful tune.
Take note of the power he has, and the awesome mic control/technique. (Im sure you will appreciate a singer with such control, as an AV guy)
And a inside secret, that "haircut" is a classic 90s Aussie "Mullet", all business up the front, party at the back baaahaaa

John live is way ahead of anyone else when it comes to voice power,, range, stamina and energy levels ,and love for and connection with his audience /fans. I'm UK, never been to a JF concert but I can see this isn't a singer performing for his audience, it's an inclusive sing-along with John. John has sung two versions of the Beatles song Help. Watch the slower one - John is barely into the beginning of the song when his audience takes over for a few lines, all in tune, and you can see how much he loves that connection. He's an exceptional performer, and an exceptional singer. Just love all his work. 5.1.24. UK. E❤

That crowd involvement you pointed out, that thing where thirty thousand people are pulled into a shared moment together is why there’s a repetitious nature to the song, as there generally is in most anthemic numbers. When you’re in that crowd, it’s burned into your brain but it’s over in a flash. And for that moment every single other person that’s in there singing along is your mate. It’s a brilliant feeling.
