How do you protect your Brompton's paint job? Do you think it is necessary to protect it? or are you just leave it as it is? Tell us your thought here.... have a good one.
Hello Petrelli from UK northwest! For me, my Brompton is a working tool and scratches and paint rubs are just signs of an active life. I dry the frame if it has been out in the rain; wash it when it is dirty; lubricate and grease the moving parts, periodically; pay for a pro service every 2000 km, or so. Yes, there is visible rust in some parts of the frame, but my 2010 S2L and 2016 S6L are still going strong. The five year frame warranty has stood up to my typical 1000 km/year multi modal commuting.
The first I did was to give my bikes paint an ordinary car-polish all over, to protect and preserve the paint. Then I found a part/shell to protect the bottom of the crank, + a bolted on plate to protect my titanium fork from the rubbing cables, and the swing-down, titanium back-frame from the chain rubbing against it (Also with some clear tape from the factory (When they know it is a "soft spot", why haven't they done something about it during all the years of production?)). Actually, the clear "tape" from the factory had been worn mostly through, - after only a few times fold, so it is rather useless! I also bought a piece of protection leather to be sown on the frame, not to scratch it when I step over, and lately a piece of leather up my stem post, for its protection during the fold.
For my Brompton, I started out as Type 2, then became Type 1 and currently Type 3. Besides putting thick color-matched or transparent tape on the rubbing spots, my main protection is a bottle of (color matched) glossy nail polish from the dollar store, which helps mitigate rusting too.
I want protection! By the way another nice way to rob the train station is using road bike boutique for protection and you can choose the color and the pattern of the bar tape and it will last a long time and also give it a little bling !
Yes, I seen a few riders done that before..... they surely lasting long and got a lot of color option also.... Thanks for sharing it and great to have you watching the video also..... have a blasting day.
And as a first I gave my bike a nice layer of auto-polish to protect the paint (Mine is yellow, flamepainted Lightweight, and a black version, so my titanium front and back, and seat post are all black. I also use the bolt-on badge, as shown by You, as protection for the cables rubbing my stem post. And some carbon plates, protecting from the chains scratching the back triangle. The piece of tape from the factory didn't last long, as I could see it was worn after a short time use.
I know that Brazilian, Brompton rider: "Chris on bike" had problems with a carbon plate below her chain and the changer on the backframe, and had it removed in New York by a certified "Brompton Technician", because it made problems when changing her gears! I use a set of similar protective plates on my bike (bought as a First from experience with the absolutely hopeless set of tape on the frame, from the factory! It was worn through after only two folds!), but seemingly not thick enough to make any problems! Beware of that!!
i want protection. dude thank you so much for your channel. i just bought my first brompton and your channel was a massive support in the research. good to see you back.
You got a at the Perfectionist! xD I got my first Brompton in December and it's still waiting patiently for its first ride.... So yes, I'm a youtube-binging perfectionist looking for protection!
I changed my leather on the frame to a sown on version, and also up the stem post, I have put a piece of sown on leather also, to protect my Lightweight
Hi Peter, Frank from SG here. This reminds me of the Neoprene chainstay protector you put on my Brompton years back :) I've since changed to stick-on protector as I found the Neoprene sleeve will sometime move around and interfere with my rear shifter. BTW, I bought a couple sheets of the same protector your were giving away (for my MTB) and if it's the same I got off AliExpress, those were pretty awful and start peeling after a while. Cheers!
Hay Frank.... nice to have you here buddy. My bike still running on the same neoprene as I was using 5 years ago.... you see how I am settling as the type 1 rider here, lol. I never get to try out those protective sticker but thanks for your feedback....
I finally got my first Brompton a few months ago. It's a M6L black colour. I noticed cable rubbing against the frame after a couple of ride. So i just put a few layers of black electrical tape over the rubbing area to protect the frame. So far so good but the tape won't last long as I have to put a new ones every month if i ride my Brompton 3 times a week. It is good to see you back. Cheers.
I have a full leather cover on all the frames length, from back to front, also over the triangel in the back, with velcro, and also a plate protection below my crank, and on the back frame, where the chain hits during the fold (Some tape had been put on from the factory, but is was soon worn through shortly after I had bought my bike, to be extra protected both on top and below, with a custom-set for the purpose (It seems to be a welknown fault which needs to be extra protected). Also where the front forks fold-hook goes over the back-frame, when folded. I also have bought a special padded pouch (very expensive!) to cover the folding pedal and some single protection, where needed. And of course a nice plate bolted on the fork, where the cables will give some wear, unless it is used. The last part are sold in many shapes, just for the fun of it.
Eric, Spring and summer is heading your way, its such a good time to bring the Brompton out now. The little channel is very small, I hope we will have more content to walk the Brompton journey with you as well as many others. I hope you have a blasting day ahead.
I put some helicopter tape under the bottom bracket & where the front wheel hooks on to the chainstay. Already have one of those velcro straps I'll shift it up the tube as in the video and add some more tape in the areas you show 👍
Helicopter tape is like a dream, they can go on to anywhere. I read it from somewhere they had use the helicopter tape to reduces the surface resistance to the wind as well. I guess if we put some at the stem would make us a faster rider also. lol..... Anyway, thanks for spending time here.

Hello Petrelli Thank you very much for your response to my queries. You might have misunderstood my queries. I had purchased a set of protection film to cover the entire Brompton bike. This film comes pre-cut and labelled to match every part of the bicycle (very much like those you see in car workshops when the entire vehicle is wrapped in clear glossy film). The purpose is to keep the entire bicycle looking new & glossy at all times.Do you think you’d be able to help identify/labelled every part of the Brompton bike? Thanks again
Gilbert, now I got you. Can you send a picture of the protection film to hello@petrelli.cc? I will then help you out from there. Anyway, thanks for being here.
@@Petrellionwheels Hi Petrelli, I’ve sent you a picture of the pre-cut film/protection sheet, as you instructed, two weeks ago. It was sent to the email address you gave me. Perhaps Ou have overlooked it.

"I Want Protection Please" You'd mentioned you don't like the pieces that uses double sided tape to stick on. Can you elaborate? I was thinking of making my own Kydex piece for the B.B. and where the front wheel clips onto the chainstay. Does the tape really not last that long? Awesome video and thanks.
Kydex is such a great thing to play with. Although I had yet to master it, I am sure a lot can be done with them. Do you shoot me an email at hello@petrelli.cc for the idea? I love to hear more thoughts and how you got on with it. As for the double-sided type that are used on those protection shell/covers. They could have been so much better if they had used a better quality double-sided type. The products that they (mainly from China) made were fine, at least the ideas were, but they couldn't get the final piece done up together. Some of the surfaces they applied those protections on are not like a dead straight round tube. There are slight bent areas where the in-flexibility doesn't help. I had replaced the "thin-thin" tape that came with the protection with a thicker double-sided "pad" and they work magically well. It just doesn't look as slick anymore. I hope I had answered you.

Hi Petrelli,
I’ve sent you a picture of the pre-cut film/protection sheet, as you instructed, two weeks ago. It was sent to the email address you gave me. Perhaps Ou have overlooked it.
@@gilberttan7952 thanks for the heads up.... I take a look and get back to you today.

thanks for watching the video, I hope it will find its way to you after the random draw.😀
Sir Petrelli, are you the same guy at Bike 48????
Yes, that's me...... have we met before?
@@Petrellionwheels no we have never met before. Was looking for ideas to mod my first brommie and came across your bike 48 video. Planning to install omniwheels soon....
I want protection, and already subscribe, hello from Philippines 😊
