- Back in October of'65 ABC's Shindig! broadcast their Halloween episode and showed a clip of the Monster Mash performed by Boris Karloff. The clip was lost somehow, but with scenes from that show that still remain, I was able to assemble a music video of what it might have looked like. I've been searching for the Karloff clip for years, and until the original is found, this will have to do. Thanks to Jason at Scar Stuff for the great remix of the Monster Mash vocal by the GRRREAT Bobby Boris Pickett!
In 1987 my soon to be wife and I went to a place called Spooky World in Berlin, Mass. I had a bad cold. As we waited outside in the freezing weather for a hay ride we passed by a stage area. The door swung open and the man himself, Bobby Boris Pickett, came out and sang this song. Suddenly I forgot all about my cold and the cold. What a treat not a trick! ALL true!
Amazing ❤
Thanks, pretty woman!

As a Karloff fan, all I can say was that this was a hoot!
AWESOME BORIS KARLOFF AS ALWAYS THE BADEST DUDE IN THE LAND
WHO ELSE COULD HAVE DONE
"Really, no words to say, Boris Karloff was great in so many ways, he knew how to go above the horror and put a heart into the "monster", and many rolls he had played"!!! 😊
It might have been from the show 'Shivaree', that I used in the recreation. That is available at Ultracoolsixties blog. Pretty cool.
This is my favorite Halloween tune!
There was a missing video segment to a Shindig episode where Boris Karloff actually sang the song. I made this clip a few months ago because it couldn't be found, and yes, you're right, it is Pickett singing the song. The title refers to Karloff visually singing the song. Thanks to Lionelatwill, however, the real audio clip was found. An amazing find.
Boris Karloff was grace, talent, elegance, and just general awesomeness personified!
had long ago forgotten this I always loved the old Universal Horror films not to mention this song Great Job and you must have put a hell of a lot of work into it Thanx
This is my favorite Halloween tune!
Excellent work
that was just wonderful. RIP Boris.
Definitely jolts the old electrodes! Thanks so much for the "MASH!" Is that the Orlons on backing vocals?
Splendid. The Elsa Lanchester (BOF) was a nice touch, too.
It would have been great if he would have released his own studio version, but the clip has been found, and although very short at under a minute, I think he nails it. You can hear the missing minutes of the Shindig episode and see my other video recreation by clicking the link above under video responses. It even has the classic Lurch segment, also missing. This clip was taken from the show "Shivaree".
There is apparently a copy of the audio of his appearance on Shindig. Someone in 1965 used a reel to reel tape recorder to tape it off their tv. th-cam.com/video/Ire4QRlMHuM/w-d-xo.html
You are right, Grausig13. Being a lifetime Bobby Boris Pickett Monster Mash super-fan for my entire life makes me assume that everyone knows this, and recognizes his voice. Unfortunately this is not true. I fixed the the notes on the video to now explain this. Thanks for the heads-up.
I used most of the clips from that video for this one, flipping and zooming, cutting and pasting scenes, then adding the audio.
"The "monster" was Dr. Frankenstein, not his creation"!!!! 😉
Borus karloff is very good at this legendary song..band is great and love the rhythem and melody..music is sensational thank you..Happy Halloween
Great site! I have it under my favorites and check it out regularly.
The hero here is Lionelatwill for finding the original audio of the Shindig episode where Boris actually sang the song. He taped the audio with his reel to reel next to the TV. Genius! I put it to video recreation and is under the video responses on this page. Glad you liked it and I'm looking forward to check out more on your site in the next few weeks, with Halloween season coming, the best time of the year!!!@siys
It's not really him, but this song is great no matter what! That said I believe I have heard the original one with him on a website. Just when you think he can't get any more epic he does stuff like this!
this coming halloween dc icon the batman is going to do his versoin of monser mash i bet batfans
I made a second clip with the actual Karloff audio, along with the rest of the missing songs from the Shindig episode once it was discovered. It's above under video responses. This video was made a couple years ago when all I had was Bobby's version.
You ever notice that the most famous horror stars were really some of the best actors of our time? Boris was stuck in a wheelchair when he did this and Vincent Price turned garbage roles into pure gold. But these days, the youngsters seem to spend most of their time in rehab.
The singing is done by Bobby " Boris" Pickett .Not Karloff
This video is using the audio from Bobby "Boris" Pickett, with an edited video of Boris Karloff. Boris Karloff isn't singing here kiddies.
Just to be clear, it's NOT Boris Karloff singing.
actually it was by Bobby "Boris" Pickett I have been a big fan of this song for years
Boris Karloff narrates "Peter and the Wolf," 1940s recording:

thanks and regards.
GREAT NEWS!!! ACTUAL VIDEO AND AUDIO CLIP OF MISSING BORIS KARLOFF FOOTAGE FOUND AND JUST UPLOADED 10-2022! Thanks to whoever located this at YouCanDanceToit!, everyone can now finally see the actual missing 5 minutes + of the original October 1965 Shindig Halloween episode starring Boris, and him singing the Monster Mash. I never thought it would be found.
It also has Lurch and all the Shindig regulars dressed up in costumes performing the rest of the missing songs, and the footage must have been copied from film because the quality is amazing! Here's the link on youtube where it was just posted- th-cam.com/video/J45fHh8TP8A/w-d-xo.html
I had always wondered if Boris Karloff ever rendered an opinion on Bobby "Bori" Pickett's impression of him for "The Monster Mash", and this gives an indication of his approval. (Karloff was known to have a great sense of humor, and he didn't take himself very seriously.)
One question remains though: did Pickett and Karloff ever meet in person? (Pickett wound up doing a deejay gig under the "Boris" persona for KRLA in Los Angeles in the mid-'60s.)
Fucking awesome. ..
I was working in the lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab, began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise
He did the mash, he did the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
He did the mash, it caught on in a flash
He did the mash, he did the monster mash
From my laboratory in the castle east
To the master bedroom where the vampires feast
The ghouls all came from their humble abodes
To get a jolt from my electrodes
They did the mash, they did the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
They did the mash, it caught on in a flash
They did the mash, they did the monster mash
The zombies were having fun
The party had just begun
The guests included Wolfman
Dracula, and his son
The scene was rockin', all were digging the sounds
Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds
The coffin-bangers were about to arrive
With their vocal group, 'The Crypt-Kicker Five'
They played the mash, they played the monster mash
The monster mash, it was a graveyard smash
They played the mash, it caught on in a flash
They played the mash, they played the monster mash
Out from his coffin, Drac's voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
Opened the lid and shook his fist and said
"Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?"
It's now the mash, it's now the monster mash
The monster mash, and it's a graveyard smash
It's now the mash, it caught on in a flash
It's now the mash, it's now the monster mash
Now everything's cool, Drac's a part of the band
And my Monster Mash is the hit of the land
For you, the living, this mash was meant too
When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you
Then you can mash, then you can monster mash
The monster mash, and do my graveyard smash
Then you can mash, you will catch on in a flash
Then you can mash, then you can monster mash
Wah-ooh, argh, monster mash, wah-ooh
Easy, Igor, you impetuous young boy
Argh, mash good, mm, argh
Monster mash, wah-ooh, monster mash, wah-ooh
Only the audio has been found so far. You can hear it on TH-cam thanks to Lionelatwill!
dc icon tje batman signs the monster mash .
Boris was quite a great horror film actor his rendition of The Monster Mash was cool. I remember watching him perform this on Shindig's Halloween special back in the mid sixties. Thanks for sharing the video it brings back memories for me when i was a teenage girl in the mid sixties.
Great to hear from someone that got to see it on TV!
Actually ayokay123 the authentic audio is the above link from lionelatwill. And a huge thanks to him for recording it 44 years ago, and preserving the reel to reel tape with special care. I put a video recreation together with clips from the original show and the original audio, and you can find it at the godzzla you tube link above titled 'Shindig Halloween Recreated w/ Boris & the Monster Mash.'
I saw the real Boris Karloff when he sang it for real on Shindig. Both were fabulous. Too bad the Boris Karloff tape is missing.
While this recording is not Boris Karloff, he did sing on Broadway as Captain Hook in the play Peter Pan. Look it up if you're a true fan.
cool recreation! I wish the original was out there someplace!!
PICTHER IF YOU WILL DC ICON THE BATMAN SITTING IN HIS CHAIR ON THE STAGE SINGING THIA SONG THE WORLD FAMEOUS MONSTER MASH SONG WITH MS.NICKI MINJA DOING THE MONSTER MASH RAP.
That's not Karloff singing
I have a question: Monstar Mash was by Boris Pickett and the Crypt Kickers but I also Boris Karloff was famous as the mummy and other horror things so did you mean Boris Pickett sings the Monster Mash above or Boris Karloff ? Was curious if the two Boris's were being confused ?
OK, I was up late last night and I posted the audio of Boris doing monster mash from 1965. The short version is on youtube and the long, complete segment is on google video. shouldn't be hard to find. Happy Halloween!!
Absolutely. Coelacanth. John Carradine was another one who made unwatchable films at least mildy entertaining.
well Coelacanth your right about the famous horror movie stars of the golden age of our time but i stll say that the bat man should sing the classic monster mash song don't you agee?
nice recreation :)
Vincent Priceless
The audio from this clip is the famous Bobby "Borris" Pickett song. Karloff liked it so much that he did this clip. Too bad the audio is lost.... :(
Good news,
I just found the original reel to reel tape with Boris doing "Monster Mash" on Shindig. I will post it as soon as I can transfer it. John
Nicely done , but Karloff may have been asked to do "Monster Mash " , but actually did "Peppermint Twist" , of all things. It IS a great episode.
It would have been nice to have Karloff's voice instead of Picket's, (the soundtrack is out there somewhere). Still, nice effort.
@arisztidoltz
AAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Great job!
I heard that Boris Karloff did sing it himself. He said that he didn't have the lisp from Pickett's version.
I appreciate the effort, but to a degree this helps reinforce the misconception that this recording is Karloff.
the Monster Mash is good song I like it thank you Boris
I remember that show! It was a trip!
Priceless--thanks!
Yea! It Rocks, big time...Boris is so cool and laid back, love the drums just kicking and skipping along and the badly focused black and white footage just adds to the over all effect. It's a pity I can't make out those lovely dancing girls much though!
Whan you just listen to Boris Karloff, he had a great speaking voice. Very pleasant to listen to.
classy animated vid of classic impersonation
Is there anywhere I can get/buy a copy of Boris on Shindig show?
Brilliant. Legosi would hate it!
I believe the music is splendid excellent and all the above
GET IT BORIS !! I'M A KARLOFF FAN FROM MY BIRTH ❤❤❤❤❤
Nice Job!!! ..and good luck!!! I'm watching The Black Cat right now....
Mr. Karloff was one of my favorite Universal movie monsters. God rest him! Would love to see actual footage of him singing even a bit of Monster Mash. That would be awesome!!! 🤗
I'd always heard there was a version of Monster Mash by Boris Karloff, but I've never been able to find it and I'm Mr. Halloween of Nightmare City Halloween, the oldest running Halloween radio program!! Thanks for this share!
You are the only person that has ever said they have anything from the original. If you could
find the tape it would be a classic to post on this site. What a Halloween treat that would be.
That is the voice of Bobby "Boris" Pickett.
This is very good. I like this recreated version.
@wompeter1 bet he could've. that was a little after "thriller".
Reminds me of the Criminologist from Rocky Horror Picture Show
On that show BORIS DID IT in his own voice
No way is that Big Boris singing. He's lip syncing Pickett.
in original he sings the peppermint twist in that vidio^^
I thought Karloff was the monster, not the doctor. I want a version, where He plays everyone, including the little girl.
Karloff DID play DOCTOR Frankenstein
Movie titled Frankenstein 1970
This is the only rendition I truly like
Awesome Video Thanks Memories...
There's a clip from (I'm pretty sure it's the same show) where Karloff sings/monologues "Peppermint Twist"
Eureka! Thanks a ton for posting the audio clips. They sound great! I've been searching for proof the segment existed for years, and now I'm convinced. It must have been a great show for you to remember it so well, and that you taped it. You're a genius. Thank-you for making my Halloween.
It definitely was! What a HOOT! It was Marvelous!
BORIS STARTED OUT AS AN EXTRA, IN A LAUREL AND HARDY MOVIE, LIKE A LOT OF OUR FAMOUS STARS - PROBABLY NOT THOSE THAT YOU MIGHT THINK! Boris Karloff real name is William Henry Pratt
Smashing!...thanks so much for taking the time to put this together. Its a rare and special treat.
I remember the original broadcast well, I recorded (the sound only) on a reel to reel tape recorder. I know I still have that tape put away somewhere. Although I haven't heard it in quite awhile, I do remember it. Boris talked more than sang through the first few lines of the song, afterwich it morphed into Ted Cassidy doing "The Learch" a novelty number with a lot of grunts. As a kid I remember searching all the stores for this record with no success.
This is the version I love to hear
I just love it. This is soooo cute and makes me miss old Boris. I saw it on Shindig back in the day......as long as it had a great beat it was cool and clean. We did the 'mash' real fast off of this....fun! Great Halloween party music for kids or adults I think. : )
Boris, the original rapper!
godzzla you did a great job with this vid. They used to play this song every Halloween but I haven't heard it in years. Thanks
THE BATMAN SHOUD SING THE MONSTER MASH SONG HALLOWEEN 2015!
Super bien !!! Thankx for the post !
Wish i still had it, but I had a vinyl 45 of this song I bought new.. My Children loved it when I played it on Halloweeen...
Wow
Sorry, this is a fake. Singing by Bobby
He said that: "Thanks to Jason at Scar Stuff for the great remix of the Monster Mash vocal by the GRRREAT Bobby Boris Pickett!"
wow, I haven't heard this song in a very long time.. Thank you so very much... I love it...
Great attempt. Would be amazing to find it intact
Good job!
*WELL DONE*! :-D
Get down Boris!
