Interesting. I normally use the "mug grip" with my middle finger, but I would always leave my index finger floating and not touching anything. It just always felt more comfortable and natural that way for me, my alternative is index in the loop, and thumb on top.

That totally works too and I do as well on a lot of pots the forefinger just adds another point of stabilization if needed
