One of the things I love about Petrucci's playing is the complexity of his riffs/chords, he doesn't settle for the simple things the average guitarists do, but the little "extra" notes inside his chords make the parts even so much more interesting than they sound with the rest of the band. The solo is amazing!
monkey1580 www.slideshare.net/edgararruda/dream-theater-a-dramatic-turn-of-events-authentic-guitar-tab-edition It's the tab book to then entire album, transcribed note for note from Petrucci's sheet music.
Zachary McCracken I'm sure he's talking about the user created tabs found on ultimateguitar.com, for instance. They're not bad, but when compared to the solo guitar track they're way off. Thanks for posting the link to the 100% correct tablature, though. Its amazing what's really played compared to what most hear on the mixed down track found on the album.
notice that you can hear some little"ringing" sound, i don't know if that came from the springs of the bridge of the guitar, or maybe from the string space between the nut and the tuners
Watch the video about him discussing his tone. He totally cranks his mids! I haven't seen that picture, but just hearing it and seeing that video I know he cranks them. You can hear tons of mids in his tone.
Also there's the mixing! notice this is not just his raw tone, you can hear that guitars were recorded twice then panned left and right, and sometimes they can record the guitars up to four times! and there are pedals, the amps, the tubes, the pickups, the guitar, the wood, the type of pick, the strings, the type of mic, the position of the mic, the size of the room, post EQ so much shit, so much shit saying 90% is just the fingers is a popular cute myth
His mids are scooped, actually. He recorded this on the Mark V in Mark IIC+ mode. The Mark V has tons of mids and even more in the C+ mode. If you scoop them out then you still have more mids than most other amps will give you. Plus, I'm pretty sure the mic is adding some mids and fizz as well. (SM57 and MD521 if I remember correctly).
@Rizzy55 do you know why he sounds so great? he has like a $50,000 set up, like 15 $3500 guitars, 3 $2600 amp heads, like 8 $900 cabinets, and about a bajillion custom effects and custom built floor controls... of course hes gonna sound better than us normal people!!
If I hear what you hear it's the amp. I don't know though. Is it constant? Humming or ringing? If it's humming it's definitely the amp. His amp is obviously humming in the background.
Nothing that can't be fixed with subtractive EQ, a pluggin for the specific frequency similar to a de-esser, or a Very high optioned hi-cut/lo-pass filter.
Never played a MK V, but taking the samples we find here on youtube, the lead channel itself seems to have plenty of mids. On JP's vid where he discusses his tone philosophy you can see the mids around 10 o'clock and the graphic EQ totally scooped. I think its from the BC&SL tour, but the tone was not too far from this one
que es eso a lo que llaman "La famosa garrapata" en el minuto 3:29??? que tiene el minuto 3:29?? is that what they call "The famous tick" the minute 3:29??? having the minute 3:29??
@tonysarrio1 Seriously is that possible? I thought once they were bounced onto a CD there was no way to get each track separate except for what you can hear in the right/left channel, which of course is alot other than just 1 instrument. There's no digital solution to what you just described I guess? You have to buy a piece of equipment for it?
@jikarpert Well also hes so awesome that hes gotten endorsements... and that is crazy cuz they just send you gear for free. Once you get the money to buy it, you get it for free...No fair!!!

He's proficient in his knowledge of chord theory, therefore the 'spice.'
The intro actually uses 6 guitars. Clean electric guitars stereo imaged with chorus on one side, acoustics in stereo, baritone, and 12-string. Crazy!
And now I know I'm playing it wrong.
same here. Tabs aren't even close.

Try songsterr
Hahahaha sure bro so did we all
That distorded tone is so perfect, the bite on the big open chords make me jizzzzz !
I'd love if every music had a ""Stem" version, this thing is Amazing,
trying to learn music by listening never became so easy.
The man's not only an amazing player, but a freaking genius when it comes to writing guitar parts. I mean LISTEN to all the voice leading in this!!!
Almost no one is as clean as Petrucci. Even guys like Tosin Abasi have string noise and occasional flop. The man's a monster.
Petrucci's Amazing riff 1:59 and his guitar solo 6:23 😁
This man has a thing towards good music.
I love the subtle phaser effect on it!
notice that you can hear some little"ringing" sound, i don't know if that came from the springs of the bridge of the guitar, or maybe from the string space between the nut and the tuners
SICK. Awesome. I would Never have the guts to show off soloed tracks like this! These guys are true masters.
LOOOOOVE THIS CRUNCH!!!

@BOOLsheet Effect of reverb you hear is actually two guitars playing the same thing. One is on the left side and second on the right side.
Espetacular, ele e o D.T. evoluem de forma incrivel. Spectacular, he and the D.T. evolve incredible.
Espectacular... Gracias por subir este material... Es de gran ayuda para nosotros los músicos.
Nice John
Amazing track!!!
I just love him

It’s definitely mark iv mode, c+ mode does not sound like this.
Besides he has some of the best 2c+ originals out there already to use.
Playing the streams together, without the drums, masterpiece!
great song !!
What a masterpiece!
first time i'm hearing the strings on the headstock ring out
genial, sorprendente!!
It's very interesting to hear the level automations.
@moatazlashine DT's website. If you can prove to them that you actually bought the album then they give you the stems
@metaldrummer47 Agreed!!!
agreed quality doesn't depend on money
This the best sound he has ever gotten.
Note to all those hacks with tube screamers. Notice the isolated tracks dont sound like a clicky wah pedal
@Rizzy55 do you know why he sounds so great? he has like a $50,000 set up, like 15 $3500 guitars, 3 $2600 amp heads, like 8 $900 cabinets, and about a bajillion custom effects and custom built floor controls... of course hes gonna sound better than us normal people!!

oh my god !!
you should make outcry too ! this is awesome ! dude .

When you are highly distorted, every single string touch produces that kind of sound.
Nothing that can't be fixed with subtractive EQ, a pluggin for the specific frequency similar to a de-esser, or a Very high optioned hi-cut/lo-pass filter.
Stem is how they send them to master the CD, All drums, Vocals, Guitars Bass, Keys then master them together.
That's the sound of life itself!
a killer tone by the way
I believe it's the pick hitting vibrating strings on the acoustic guitar...
@BOOLsheet theres some reverb
the intro sounds very Opeth
thumbs up if you sing along
Never played a MK V, but taking the samples we find here on youtube, the lead channel itself seems to have plenty of mids. that intro♥
Not gonna lie, that is a bad ass picture
que es eso a lo que llaman "La famosa garrapata" en el minuto 3:29???
que tiene el minuto 3:29??
is that what they call "The famous tick" the minute 3:29???
having the minute 3:29??
Only Petrucci can pull off the intro with SIX guitars in unison.
look at his Mark V setting on his official website. You realize that his EQ curve is totally scooped.
@tonysarrio1 Seriously is that possible? spring reverb maybe...!
Yeah, I can tell it's obviously not scooped, and yes it is amazing. :D
I love it how all these [stupid] metal heads scoop their mids but Petrucci's tone is the exact opposite of scooping them. :P
SOMEBODY....DID HE MIXED WITH A LITTLE CHORUS IN IHS DISTROTION... COZ I CAN HERE A LITTLE CHORUS THERE...
Is that a new guitar tab notation format I'm not aware of?
j/k
@jikarpert Well also hes so awesome that hes gotten endorsements... and that is crazy cuz they just send you gear for free. Once you get the money to buy it, you get it for free...No fair!!!
Ciao puoi dire cm caspita hai fatto a isolare le tracce di ogni singolo musicista????? E poi le isolate dal cd???
Petrucci is Diablo fan! That's for sure
sometimes it does ;)
It's definitely just an acoustic guitar layered in with the electric guitar.
Does John use any delay or reverb at all on his rhythm tone?
I'd say it's all three.
I don't understand how he can get that tone if you're right. There's TONS of mids in there. Getting that kind of tone is impossible with scooped mids.
Does someone know how this guy got the isolated tracks for this song?
He records it off of Rock Band
Oh!!!!!!! That makes a lot of sense. But are you sure of it?
Yep. Stem's are what they're called if they're taken from Rock Band.
Oooooh, nice. Thank you for that.
No problem man.
what having the minute 3:29?? please respond. :)
Where the free replay botom?
Does it sound like it? I mean DOES IT SOUND LIKE IT? TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK. Please and thank you. Sincerely, the TH-cam community.
@BOOLsheet I don't think so, no. At least from what I can hear... :)
is there an Outcry Stem?
If you do 2X speed it sounds pretty fuckin awesome lmfao
Right here >>>>> 0:00

WTF! My speakers caught fire @ 0:19
@calitheguitarist We are measly children among a God lmao
มีสิครับ sixsensetree 55555555
More like 30% hands, 20% mics, 20% Guitar and pickups, 30% amp.
ไม่มีคนไทยเรยหรอ ?
how did you do this?^^

Jesus...
คับๆ ได้มา4นิ้วเเล้ว 5555
Los que dieron manita abajo sabran interpretar esta obra
or hes making a lighthearted joke
เยอะแต่ขี้เกรียจพิม ฟังอย่างเดียวครับ ฮ่าๆๆ
ด้วยคนดิ ฟังแยก stem แจ่มดีออก
this guy is great but all his riffs sound the same for 25 years
Listen to Slayer or Cannibal Corpse :D
You either don't know what the word "tone" means, or know nothing about audio production. In fact, it's probably both of those.
he scoops the mids.
this is what i call distortion
กุนี่ไง
กูด้วย ได้เท่าขี้เล็บ10นิ้วก็พอใจแล้ว
I love this! But he REALLY needs a fretwrap or some foam under the strings on the headstock, there's so much ring when he's playing the verse sections
Tremolo springs
I'd say 90% is the equipment, then maybe 10% hands. I've heard several guys sound almost identical to Petrucci.
I dont like the guitar tone in this song. however clean tone is perfect.
too many fx
