I think shooting down the flag is super important here because it's the Strawhats demonstrating to Robin that they're fully committed to going down with her no matter what. If the World Government is her enemy then it's their enemy too. And that's what finally gives Robin the courage to face her true feelings, I think. She did everything she could to drive them away and they still came back, she warned them that they would be fighting the entire world if they stood with her and they said "bring it on". She finally had to accept that they're not going to turn on her, they're not going to abandon her, they're not going to regret being friends with her. They are true friends and she's allowed to ask for help
correct, she wanted to protect them, but in the end they dont want to be prrotected. they are all well aware of the risk they chose to take when they entered The Grand Line, and Robin from this point has decided that she will follow them to the end of the world, or their mutual death, come what may.
I have the phrase "No one is born into this world to be alone" tattooed onto my forearm, specifically for the reasons you talk about at the end. When I find myself falling into depression I can look down, see that, and remember that scene, a remember that I want to live.
Such a raw and honest portrayal of depression. We often attach ourselves to people because of what we can provide. And for Robin for her entire life her only worth was reading poneglyphs. The terrible things everyone did to her would all be worth enduring because she has that one thing going for her. She will fulfill what Clover and Olvia started. But that one thing came back to bite her when she found friends who didn't want her for her abilities, who didn't care if she was the devil or she could read poneglyphs. Her being on the ship with them was enough. That's true companionship man. And when her ability to read history threatened her only friends, she broke. She lost her self worth and went to the darkest place she could go to. I've been there and all I can say is that that place is worse than death. Robin is such an inspiration to me. Her story, her fight, will to live and to find the light in the darkness changed my life. It helped me find my self worth back and helped me to reach out and seek help. I bawl my eyes out everytime I see this and I believe it heals me everytime. She is my hero.
A few things I like pointing out to reactors for the end of this flashback: (no spoiler stuff) 1: Kuzon: was shocked at the destruction of the evac ship, he really wanted the civilians to leave and live. Sometimes that is missed because he gets back to doing his job right away. 2: Please please please remember the name of the officer that ordered the evac ship to be destroyed. That character comes back, and this is a perfect character example of him.
Most people should realize it before now... like Arlong Park and Alabasta are no joke either. But this is one of the greatest moments in the series history of GREAT moments!
Such hard hitting quotes Just the genuine "i want to live" and also "no one is born to be alone" . Those lines have seriously helped me through depression and eventuellt the darkest of thoughts Its just amzingly hard hitting. Even just watching you react to it now makes me cry Also! First time i hear a reactor saying Olvia correctly!
I forgot whose analysis it was (Murphy?), but someone once compared this entire scene to the depression. How she's already given up the will to live and surrendered herself to her demons. The entire cliff is a neverending ditch and hell. Her help/ friends have been with her the whole way, but they can only go so far. They can't reach her on the other side unless she helps herself out. It's ok to ask for help, to take the helping hand. But at the end of the day, change and will to live comes from her. She has to be the one that really seeks the help she's offered.
14:48 I'd just like to point out something super minor but it's that back in the Ohara flashback Kuzan and Sakazuki were actually both vice admirals of equal rank. So Kuzan wasn't really responsible for him per se, but definitely part of the same power abusing organisation.
This is one of my favourite One Piece moments and it’s what Robin’s character was building to for over a hundred episodes. She was ready to call it quits in Alabasta and only joins the Strawhats originally because Luffy saved her life when everyone else in her life would have left her behind, and while she was considered an enemy.
The Vice Admiral, Sakazuki, who orders the evac ship is on the same level of the org chart as Kuzan (Aokiji) at the time. He's also a good name to remember... And man I love your talk at the end about what "I want to live" means to you. Had so many of the same thoughts when I first saw this scene ❤️
Fun fact: up until after her "I want to live speech" robin never spoke any of the strawhats real names, but rather by their position in the crew. She never bothers because she has so much distrust in everyone. Oda is next level
Really random connection but “no one is born into this world to be alone” has the same feel as “no man is a failure who has friends” from it’s a wonderful life and they destroy me in equal measure.
Iconic. That moment perfectly describes One Piece. We get heart-wrenching stories, and then Luffy cheers us up. We've seen it happen for other crew members. And it works every single time.
11:19 aside from you doing your best Clover seeing a giant impression, do you remember that Robin's bounty was for destroying six battleships? We see now that Saul was the one who did that.
Omg I never realized they tried to cover up infighting in the marines here even if it was a deserted officer after all there cant be true deserters when their cause is oh so just right? Even a little girl doing the chaos instead is more believable
I’ve been waiting for this since the moment Robin joined the crew, and Nerdy was apprehensive. The salty tears he cried in this reaction is our compensation for all the prior Robin slander. We have now been paid in full.😤
To be fair the guy who blew up the evacuation ship Sakazuki (remember that name) did that one his own. They were supposed to let the civilians go thats why even Spandine was shocked, and actually right now they are both only Vice Admirals so they don't really have control over each other.
I think that they weren't supposed to let them leave , such were even the actual orders. It just so happened that most of those vice admirals had enough humanity left to not go after civilians then. Sakazuki only cared about being a good doggie
@@ZarathosDaimaoh Nah the Civilians were supposed to be allowed to leave. Giving them a ship to evacuate on just to blow it up is stupid. If they were supposed to take out everyone just attack them all at once. Plus again even Spandine the guy who was in charge and the one to make the choice to use the Buster Call was shocked they killed the civilians, and that is saying something considering how heartless that guy is.
The "I want to live" moment is by far my favorite moment of One Piece. I strongly suggest watching the Dub version of that moment as well, the english VA was simply incredible. She moves me to tears every single time I watch it.
I've been waiting for you to reach this episode. I knew it would hit you directly in the heart, in the best way a story can. There's no other episode that puts the show's soul on display quite like that one does.
You've already met the elder stars back in Jaya. I don't think Olivia had any particular reason to stay (beside helping with the books like all of them), it's just that her presence would have endangered Robin. Only three people know Robin can't leave the island until the information spread, but all marines on every battleship already know about Olivia. She risks Robin's life if she saves herself. What I really like about this, is that Sakazuki's actions might have doomed his cause. He was so uncompromising in his justice he was willing to murder an entire boat full of innocent rather than just escort them and screen them one by one based on the flimsiest possible risk. Ao Kiji/Kuzan before the ships blows seems 100% ready to commit to his mission, he doesn't have doubts even in the face of Saul's accusations but the second Sakazuki destroys the civilian ship, he becomes horrified. If Sakazuki hadn't tried so hard to kill them all, he might have actually succeeded in stopping Robin because Kuzan would likely not have let her go but his reckless actions made Kuzan wavers.
To this day, Sogeking shooting through that flag is my favorite moment in the entire series. Its such a bold statement of their unconditional love and support for her
same man... robin's backstory makes me cry every time. also you look good bald. so good in fact that until you mentioned it i didn't remember you had hair in previous vids.
In the best way possible i loved your reaction to this ep, it clearly hit you in the feels and you are not afraid to show your emotions. This is why i love One Piece cause no other media can make you feel like One Piece does.
(I swear none of this is spoilers, I can justify it all) Flashback Time: In that super exposition episode of Jaya/Skypiea where we meet Whitebeard and see the other Warlords, we also get introduced to the Five Elder Stars/Planets (translation options). It's the same 5 guys, even all this time later. We also see the Afro guy with the pet goat, he's the tippy top of the Navy--The Fleet Admiral. Stuff the manga told people but the anime kept out because even when the pacing and animation are on-point they still make weird choices - ADMIRAL EDITION: (Note: When we meet Aokiji before W7, Robin name-drops all 3 admirals: Aokiji, Kizaru, Akainu) Saul calls Aokiji "Kuzan", I believe Ohara is the first moment that really clarifies that the admirals are assigned codenames (more aura, I guess). Translated the codenames are "Blue Pheasant," "Yellow Monkey," & "Red Dog." The animal choices are a mythology reference. When the focus shifts to the man who went rogue and ordered the destruction of the evacuation ship, the manga gives him a title card. It introduces him as "Vice Admiral Sakazuki (later known as *Admiral Akainu*)" For better or for worse, this event created two Admirals. (Vice-Admiral Kuzan had his own Ohara title card)
"Help me, Luffy!" and "I want to live!" are among a select number of sentences that allow you to recognize the One Piece fans in a crowd based on the sudden tears.
Been waiting for this one! Easily the biggest emotional climax we’ve seen so far, and one of the best moments in anime ever. And yes that’s Usopp’s best moment, but only his best moment so far!
ive seen so many one piece reactions over the years and this was hands down the most thoughtful and beautiful reaction to robins "i want to live moment" I didnt think it was possible to cry anymore than i allready was but what you spoke about after hit so close to home. So much love nerdy x from scotland
20:30 - Robin's English VA does an outstanding job too, maybe sometime you will watch these key moments again in the Funimation DUB and give your take on how well they did.
One of the many scenes in OP that genuinely changed my life forever... Wow... Still gives me the tears & chills. BTW. you already met Fleet Admiral Sengoku when he met with Doflamingo, Kuma, Hawkeye and Lafitte from Blackbeard's crew back after Alabasta. He's younger here. And Sakazuki who blew up the evacuation ship is now one of the 3 admirals alongside Aokiji. Here they were both lower rank, Vice Admirals. So Kuzan/Aokiji wasn't responsible for Sakazuki's actions here.
That's why we love the strawhats, they go all out for friend and family. They're the ideal that we should all work towards. Loved your breakdown of the episode at the end.
It wasn't the 5 elder stars or the fleet admiral, not even spandine gave the order. It was Vice Admiral Sakazuki who made the call based on his idea of justice. Still blows my mind that it wasn't an order from the elder stars.
Olvia for algorithm godess is an excellent choice. ---------------------- The flashback was only for us and for Robin, no one else saw that. Luffy saw that she was afraid of the government and she was afraid for her friends. That she was afraid of being abandoned. Shooting that flag - with no hesitation, I might add - told her that they have no intention of abandoning her. She belongs with them. Happy Robin makes me happy. -------------------- This story has changed lives. This story about a goofy rubber pirate has changed so many lives. It's subtle, but that mindset shift is real.
A lot of people would've offed themselves, become a worse person, and suffer silently if it wasn't for therapy. You don't have to make things look bad to make something else look good. The scene was peak, and thats all there has to be said
this is why i love one piece so so so much, oda does such a good job bringing these emotions and setting up characters and their story so that it just hits you just right
Not only he lifted the whole ship, but he lifted it above water, pulling it out of the surface tension force of the water itself. What that means is he lifted more than "just" the weight of the ship, but more than that. I mean try pulling out a piece of wood floating on the surface, you will feel it get (Lighter) once it actually is no more in contact with the water! And yes, in my humble opinion, Robin's backstory is the saddest of all, tied with another that I cannot speak of yet. Some other that comes later rival hers, but none is sadder than hers if you ask me.
and there is people that does not get Luffy`s greatness... when he says : "'i dont care what you want to do, if you wanna die then come here and do it by our side" he understand that she is not free to really do what she wants... Luffy all about that freedom.
Feel you Bro ❤ One Piece is the Story of my Life, and im glad to be alive and to Witness such Wonders of our Time. My mum suiceded herself and i was homeless for almost a decade. One Piece thought me all i needed to not give up. And here i am, living and almost out of all that shit that gathered over the time, with a Wife on my Side.
Remember back when Robin 1st joined and you were thinking about not watching anymore? I'm so glad you continued and got to this part. This scene kept me going on when I was at one of my lowest points.
Man, Saul's words to Nico Robin "nobody is born into this world to be alone" has been heavily imprinted in my mind ever since I watched that scene for the first time in my teens (now I am 36 years old). Despite the fact that I had parents and a family overall, I used to feel quite lonely because I didn't really have any friends or at least not very closed ones and I was overall very shy. I was also terrible with girls because I didn't have the courage to approach one and confess my true feelings to a girl. Didn't even feel like I was talented or any good in anything in particular. So you can imagine how powerful and heartbreaking must've been for me to hear that sentence from Saul and to watch that scene in the first place. But not only that, the whole backstory of Nico Robin was very heartbreaking for me to watch in that period of my life. I can honestly say that I saw myself a lot in Nico Robin😢Now fortunately my situation is much more different (for the better that is) than in that period of my life but the scar from my past is still there somewhere and no matter how many times I watch Saul's final moment and Nico Robin's whole backstory/flashback and the whole Nico Robin's "I want to live" scene/sequence, I can't help myself but break into tears😭🥲
What Zoro did after Robin said she wants to live is called Kinchou, pull the sword a little out and put it back to knock the crossguard. The act is simple but means I use my life to promise you.
Love the emotional and vulnerable moments at the end. One Piece is really good at invoking and encouraging those feelings, which is why I love it so much. Great video!
There are many moments to come that are super emotional, and charged, and epic, but this is it for me. "I want to live" is my favorite One Piece scene, Robin's moment was slowly and subtly building up from the moment she joined the crew and the emotional release is insane.
For ep. 37 I was like "oh no. I love these characters... But I still have 1000 eps to catch up." This episode I was like "I'm excited to catch up! Make a thousand more once I do... Take me to Sea with You! My Fantabulous Straw Hats!"
After this, every time you see Robin smile, it will make you smile. Happy Robin makes me happy. Even Spandine was surprised about the evacuation ship getting blown up. Kuzan/Aokiji is a bit of wild card. He's going to do his job, but there may be some interesting abnormalities here and there.
There is one thing you'll hear every single time One Piece makes you bawl like a baby: "This is where One Piece gets good." It just keeps on getting better, man. Different, but new highs are reached every single time for sure.
According to the English voice actress for Robin, to this day she still gets people telling her that the “I want to live” moment inspired them to want to live 😢
Your outro discussion hit so hard, especially after the amount of fear and terror in many marginalized groups after the American election. It's a good reminder to check in on the people you care about, and make sure that they know you care.
After all the abuse, grief, trauma, and persecution Nico Robin endured her entire life, it's a testament to how strong she is that she didn't give up on life before this point, or snap and become the monster the world accused her of being. But she finally reached her limit and wanted to die; fortunately for her, she met the Straw Hats. Back on Drum Kingdom, Luffy told Wapol that he didn't care what kind of status or title his enemies have: he was still going to beat them up. The inverse applies to his friends; it doesn't matter how lowly you are, how hated you are, how much trouble you might bring, or anything like that. Luffy will be your friend, and if that means declaring war on the entire world, then the whole damn world can just bring it on. And kudos to the rest of the crew as well. Luffy makes his declaration of war, and there's not a single protest, disbelieving look, or even a flinch. All of them have accepted Nico Robin as a member of their crew, and they're ready to fight for her against everyone.
This reminds me of one thing Whitebeard says later: "And someday, Somewhere in the future, someone will appear carrying the history of all those decades on his back will challenge the world to a fight".
Damn, Lex Luthor watching One Piece now.

I screamed 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Stuff the manga told people but the anime kept out because even when the pacing and animation are on-point they still make weird choices - ADMIRAL EDITION:

Certified banger Usopp moment.
He's in this?
God, Robin’s backstory is so utterly heartbreaking. Robin calling for her mother is burned onto my soul!
10:09 this is currently Fleet Admiral Sengoku - I'm pretty sure he's an Admiral in this flashback
It wasn't the 5 elder stars or the fleet admiral, not even spandine gave the order. It was Vice Admiral Sakazuki who made the call based on his idea of justice. Still blows my mind that it wasn't an order from the elder stars.
Clover talking... "information is the greatest weapon!"

Olvia for algorithm godess is an excellent choice.

Shooting that flag - with no hesitation, I might add - told her that they have no intention of abandoning her. She belongs with them.
Happy Robin makes me happy.

This story has changed lives. This story about a goofy rubber pirate has changed so many lives. It's subtle, but that mindset shift is real.
"I want to live" saved more people than therapy ever will.
A lot of people would've offed themselves, become a worse person, and suffer silently if it wasn't for therapy. You don't have to make things look bad to make something else look good. The scene was peak, and thats all there has to be said
YEA we reached BALD Piece
Loved the message at the end man. I'm glad the episode hit so hard for you. Shoutout to Oda for this awesome story
this is why i love one piece so so so much, oda does such a good job bringing these emotions and setting up characters and their story so that it just hits you just right
21:19 The sigh of relief, tears in eyes, "I fuckin love that."
We were all there lol.
I cry every time Robin says I want to live but it's impossible for me not to laugh when Franky is crying. 😂
Some other that comes later rival hers, but none is sadder than hers if you ask me.
and there is people that does not get Luffy`s greatness... when he says :
"'i dont care what you want to do, if you wanna die then come here and do it by our side" he understand that she is not free to really do what she wants... Luffy all about that freedom.
Feel you Bro ❤
One Piece is the Story of my Life, and im glad to be alive and to Witness such Wonders of our Time.
Just found your channel. Subbed. Keep it up
What Zoro did after Robin said she wants to live is called Kinchou, pull the sword a little out and put it back to knock the crossguard. The act is simple but means I use my life to promise you.
Oh shit that is so cool! Thank you for the info!
oda really know how to play with our emotion.. i scream so hard when luffy say "bring it on!!" after declare a war against the government..
Your wife is missing out on some of the most evocative television i have ever watched.
its a seriously powerful backstory, still makes me cry even well after it first aired when i saw it
Love your discussion at the end. The best and most real reaction and something we can all resonate with. Thank you for sharing this.
man.... this hits too close to home
For ep. 37 I was like "oh no. I love these characters... But I still have 1000 eps to catch up." This episode I was like "I'm excited to catch up! Make a thousand more once I do... Take me to Sea with You! My Fantabulous Straw Hats!"
Oh god i’ve watched the i want to live moment about a million time and I still tear up every single time
one of the best moments in anime, oda did god level work with all the build up hes truly one of the greatest storytellers
"Take Me to Sea With You!" From these past 4 episodes... My pajama shirt was soaked!
It's always so difficult to explain why this show, which can be so silly sometimes, makes me cry so much.
and nerdy i feel you, I also know a lot of people unfortunately without support or help which wished for them end 😢
I actually like the English version of this great moment from Robin. The voice actress really knocked it out of the park.
There is one thing you'll hear every single time One Piece makes you bawl like a baby: "This is where One Piece gets good."
It just keeps on getting better, man. Different, but new highs are reached every single time for sure.
"I want to live" is my favorite one piece moment
I forgot how brutal the scene with Robin's mother was.
I’m so glad to see this, I remember how you felt about Robin and to see the progression ❤. And that discussion at the end hits 😢
EVERY TIME I see the Robin Flashback, I get tears. EVERY TIME. GOda.
Dude this was beautifully honest and i fucking dig it!
and there it is. Been waiting for this moment for weeks now, not disappointed
According to the English voice actress for Robin, to this day she still gets people telling her that the “I want to live” moment inspired them to want to live 😢
The Brotherhood of NOD campain has been selected.
Your outro discussion hit so hard, especially after the amount of fear and terror in many marginalized groups after the American election. It's a good reminder to check in on the people you care about, and make sure that they know you care.
Whoa, you don’t have hair anymore. It’s quite a bold change. I shave my head too.
Also, that’s not Usopp. That’s SniperKing. C’mon man
After all the abuse, grief, trauma, and persecution Nico Robin endured her entire life, it's a testament to how strong she is that she didn't give up on life before this point, or snap and become the monster the world accused her of being.
This reminds me of one thing Whitebeard says later:
"And someday, Somewhere in the future, someone will appear carrying the history of all those decades on his back will challenge the world to a fight".
These episodes are painful but oh so beautiful, as is your reaction to them
The Paul Giamatti metamorphosis is well underway
literally cannot wait to watch this when i get home from work 🤩
Thats why they're called The Ohara Devils
Mr. White back at it again with the One Piece reactions.
This moment is easily one of the best moments in anime history. The power the sentence "I want to live" has...
