This was obviously put together by a German. Renown had the longer range guns, and the British were not nearly as bad a shots as this seems to show. Yes, Scharnhorst had slightly better armor, but not enough to offset a hit from a 15" gun.
Actually she had less range on her 15 inch than the German 11 inch 33,500 yards to 40,000 yards. And I hardly consider 3 hits out of 230 shells fired to be accurate.
@@maverick392cid but what if you add up what Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, they had a smaller fraction of hits when compared to renown. 1.3 for Renown, vs 0.85.
Well she out shot Scharnhorst and Gnisenau at the same time in bad weather and poor visibility. One on one, Renown would likely clobber her, though like most German heavy ships it would probably require toroedoes to finish off the flaming wreck because of her extreme durability.
None of the British 15 inch could reach the same range as the Scharnhorst class 11 inch. Maximum for those was 33,500 yards and Vanguards was 37,000 yards. The 11 inch was 40,000 yards. Plus with a speed advantage of only .5 knots, she won't be able to pick the range. She got lucky in the fact that the hits she took were from poor 11 inch shells. Same as the 7 hits Bismarck hit Prince of Wales with.
@@jamiegagnon6390 better accuracy when the range is between 15 to 20k yards. Though you lose some plunging shell fire at the closer ranges, the hit percentage goes up significantly.
Radar is largely irrelevant given that both ships can clearly see each other and the radar of the time could only approximate range. 15" inch guns only best 11" guns if they have superior performance characteristics which the Renown's do not.
Lot people here don’t know their naval history facts lol. Scharnhorst had slightly heavier broadside with a shorter reload time and had much better armor protection. In fact Scharnhorsts smaller caliber shells actually had a bit better penetration than Renown’s larger shells. IRL a one on one between these these ships would be intense but in the end Scharnhorst would be most likely to survive not without heavy damage dealt to it of course. Still I think she could survive a fight with Renown.
Bruh none of that is true, look at the action of Lofoton, Renown got more hits, then Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, all of Renown's hit's were damaging hits, like removing Gneisenau's range finder, whilst all 11 inch hits on Renown didn't penetrate or even explode. and the broadside weights are actually, 11,628 (Renown) and 6,552 (twins). Also only parts of Renown's belt can be penetrated, but Scharnhorst can stand to a 15 inch shell, but most times, these numbers don't mater.
Eh? this fight happened in real life in a 1 v 2 with both Scharnhorst sisters fighting Renown in the middle of a storm. Renown won this interaction, forcing both ships to retreat after destroying one of Genisenaus forward turrets, while her 9-inch armour belt kept her safe from two hits from the German 11 inch shells.
Damage control parties and hits on an armoured deck make it highly unlikely that RENOWN would have been sunk. As I said she would have held out of range and sunk Scharnorst. Also ships dont just blithely steam past other as shown here and in reality RENOWN would have had the range after her first straddles.
Gamers like you, you mean? Bore diameter is less important with armour piercing rounds than you believe. Scharnhorst's guns were actually superior in both range and penetration. She also had superior armour.
And Renown a battle cruiser engaged both German battle cruisers, received an 11" hit which caused minor damage but when the Germans received one 15" hit they fled
The bore diameter is only one factor in judging the effectiveness of shells, particularly armour piercing shells. Scharnhorst actually slightly outranges Renown and her shells have better penetration abilities. She also has a sizeable rate of fire advantage. Someone here even suggests that she has a slightly greater weight of broadside; which seems reasonable.
11 inch had a range of 40,000 speed close, armor German was superior range finders superior , accuracy superior, rate of fire 3 - 4 rounds a minute verses 1 every 90 seconds
Hello everyone, a new Atlantik Fleet video is now available here on my channel: th-cam.com/video/CCVHJMDb4Yw/w-d-xo.html

Golly gosh the old Germans hate to lose - Everyone knows they fled from Renown's 15" guns when it was guarding a convoy
Why doesn't the Scharnhorst get 50% more shots off? Their guns reload much faster.
These Fights Are Some Of The Most Painful Scenarios I Have Ever Watched Use The Range Finder For Ranging Your First Shots. Then Eyeball It.
Vor der Renown sind Gneisenau und Scharnhorst schon gemeinsam getürmt.
Again make the game realistic, Renown would sit where 11 ok inch guns can't reach and destroy Scharnhorst with longer range guns. Another German dream

Here we go again, British and American ships had better radar, 15" guns best 11" guns and both are battle cruisers not battleships

Renown was also faster. She could stay out of Sharnhorst's range and easily sink her.
You're right Peter, forgot about that
Renown was slower

So she won a battle because she shot straighter, not because she was the better ship.

Ludicrous , 11 inch outgunning 15 inch, no chance, Get realistic!
Nine eleven-inch guns versus six 15-inch. Renown would keep the range open and demolish the panzerschiff
