- Hello comrades! Re:Zero has been brought up a few times in the comments and during premiers, so it's only natural that I would cover it eventually. However, this is a show that I've been following since it first aired and have a lot to say about, because it is one of my favorites. OK, chill, I know how toxic the fandom can be, but I like Re:Zero because it is a good story! Yes, it is all over the place and there are things that I don't enjoy as much Still, it's not finished and we can't judge it so harshly yet. Having said that, hope you learn something new, or at least find these 5 Things That Make Perfect Sense in Re:Zero fun and entertaining.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how "correct" would your actions be in his place?
A 1/10 because I would have been weak, then ran off w/Rem. Spot on as usual w/your assessment.

It's difficult to say. Considering how Puck went on a rampage after Emilia was killed in season 1 (I'm talking about the time Subaru was frozen to death), it probably wouldn't be possible to avoid helping since running would likely result in death regardless. Even if you try running at the start, you would probably learn that you need to do something to help if you don't want to keep getting frozen.
I would just leave Emilia to die and live an average life,escaping from any possible problems.Idk how correct is that :[
Not only are all the points you've stated valid, I'd also like to add that Subaru didn't have a particularly healthy mental state before the story even properly began; he had absolutely given up on having a social life, felt like he was only taking advantage of his parent's kindness and wanted nothing more than for them to abandon him, and had not a singular positive impression of himself as a person. Add the extreme trauma he goes through as the story progresses, and the result is obvious. Of course he's gonna have his low points.

You can hate Subaru as a character but you can't call him a bad character.
He's an amazingly well written character that's more relatable & realistic than almost every other character in anime. But some people can hate him because of exactly that.
Do i love Subaru's personality? Not really but I absolutely love him as a character. One of the best protagonists in anime.

most people just mix the concepts. subaru was in fact a bad person (till arc 3) but he aways has been a masterful character and protagonist but some ppl just don't seem to understand that these 2 things are not the same
I don't really get what's there to hate, honestly. He's approachable, social, empathetic, very willing to forgive. He has his own problems, most apparent early on being his ignorance and inexperience, but if you want to hate him for that, you're gonna hate every person you meet.
Hell, most of his issues come from a very understandable place, since they pretty much all stem from his horrible self-image and his need to find worth in himself.
If the character was a murderer or something, I'd get not liking their personality, but Subaru is arguably the singular best example of heroism in re zero as a whole. In a setting full of genuinely horrible people, disliking his personality for an sympathetic low point just doesn't compute to me.
True, i dont know why the hell some people hate subaru and the anime overall. But there are hundreds of shit animes and they like that instead lol. Subaru is real man and the series is a masterpiece.
Up until now, I still believe Subara is an amazing MC. He does not have everything but the fact that he can overcome all the challenges and not giving up deserves my respect as a man.

I find it honestly surprising that people actually call him a bad character. If any random person found themselves in his shoes, they'd also start losing their minds. It's far more impressive that he continues to try and save his loved ones over and over

Ram’s love for Roswaal grew even stronger in S2 because Rem was gone. The history corrected itself and made Ram thought that she had been depended on Roswaal alone for ages

Rem's erasure makes other things make sense too. Like Frederika showing up from nowhere, Ram was obviously swarmed with work, so she had to call for her help

Who is rem?
People forget the fact that Subaru being as flawed as he is IS what makes him such a great and realistic character. Any normal person would go insane from dying in many ways, season 2 proved that just because he died many times before, that doesn't mean there aren't more ways for him to die in even more brutal, mentally scarring ways. He literally goes from "I'm kinda getting used to death" to "oh shit oh fuck oh god oh rabbits"

This is what I love. The athour knows exactly on how to add plot twists to make the story intresting and even execute it properly. Most of the time, I do not like plot twists because sometimes they just feel illogical or break expectations, so adding plot twists into a story should be done carefully. I can say whoever made the story is definitely a W author.

Subaru's a kid who is sad that people keep comparing him to his dad and hates himself that he gave up living to those expectations. I felt the same way when I thought I was wasting my life doing nothing while some of my peers have entered competitions, took classes seriously, and contributed to society.

Subaru already loves Satela, it was cut from the anime but in the light novel when he saw her face to face in season 2 he imediately felt live for her witch he tries to resist with all of his mind, body and soul. Satela has 2 personalities the witch of envy and Satela( the personality that talked to Subaru in season 2 ). Satela is the one that tried to end the world but despite this evryone that knew her besides Echidna hate the witch of envy and like Satela.
I wish they explained that in the anime...
@@mahistv While the anime is a good adaptation it leaves some verry important info. In season 1 they also didn't put the scene where Al ( Priscila's atendant) told Subaru he is got isekaid into the Re Zero world and cut another scene with him where he was about to try and kill Rem when She found out who She was , he didn't have any problem with Ram, he even got Rem confused with her and only changed his attitude when Rem told her who She is. Al acording to the author is supossed to be one of the 5 big misteryes of the story.

And just leaving that bombshell in there with no elaboration would kinda suck. And hey, by the time Season 3 rolls over, I see no issues with rolling that bit of information back it.

You're hitting the nail on the coffin there for all of these. A lot of people tend to forget just how fragile and awkward Subaru really is on the inside. All the characters act tough on the outside but a the majority of the main cast are 2 expertly crafted sentences away from going batshit

as a light novel reader I love when ppl realize how great and realistic of a character Subaru is. it just gets better the further you go.

Like the anime so far adapted only 4 arcs of the WN out of 11 (based on the authors statement that there will be only 11 arcs). So judging Subaru based on what we saw so far was kind of kek.
Similar shit I heard people talk about Rudy from Mushoku Tensei when first part of s1 was going out.
One thing about Subara I love is, he is 100% how any normal person would react if thrusted into that situation. We'd go thro the same emotions n stuff as him. Except most of us prob wouldn't be able to come back mentally like he did.

The fact that Subaru is merely ”cringe” and not mentally deranged by the end of arc 2 says something about Subaru’s character.

I also want to add something else that people seem to miss (or i may missreading the character)
From the beggining Subaru sees this world as a game or an anime that he would watch in his world, thinking he his an OP protagonist with some sort of strength and that "NPC's" will support him no matter what.
I started to think like this while rewatching some episodes and I got to episode 13. In this episode he:
-Goes manic while fighting with Julius, he even fought him as if he was waiting for some power to awaken within him.
-Interferes in the Castle and makes him and Emilia's party, look bad in front of many people when ghe was *specifically told to wait with Rem*, as if he thought it was all an event and thing were going to play on his favor
-Throws a tantrum when Emilia tells him that she didn't ask him to do all he did, he did it for himself, as if he was expecting her to throw some generic dialogue like "Oh, you did all that for me? You're so cute" when in reality, all he did was terribly selfish and did it in order to achieve something that was not ever going to happen.
-He keeps trying to make up excuses for what happened, as if ANYONE would listen to him after all that.
-He starts to scream at Emilia starting with "Haven't I made everything work out alright?" and proceeds to tell her all the things he did, as if saying "I chose all the good decisions, why don't you fall for me" thinking that Emilia is a NPC that should follow a certain patern.
His behaviour changed after he was completely destroyed in episode 14-15 and he recovered at 16, when he kinda understood that this is very real and very much not a game.
That was indeed a breaking point for him, pretty much he had to sink to the bottom and come back
idk, I'm pretty sure after the very first arc or the mansion arc at the latest it sunk in for him that this wasn't a game. Most of what you described have to do with him trying to keep his pride and ego, because without that he felt that he's nothing

It drives me crazy that people expect Subaru to be this perfect Mc where he has to get everything correctly right off the bat and be op like Goku and not be emotionally affected by dying left and right and watching others die left and right. Goku, loses as much as he wins so someone like Ainz Ooal Gown is a better example because not only does he always win, even when a fight appears even he has a clear path to victory so you know he will win.
Recently I had an argument with some dude over Re:Zero and he genuinely thought that dying over and over again and the gravity of Subaru's situation should make all his previous trauma/psychological problems disappear and that this should make him mature much faster than he does in the anime (just like veterans and other people who are forced to mature from early age).
As a comparison he brought up Groundhog's Day and Edge of Tomorrow and how fast their MCs change. When I tried to explain that Subaru's situation is actually nothing alike, he called me a hypocrite and said that I am a kid who doesn't understand mental health.
Still can't believe the nerve of that dude. Now it doesn't surprise me at all when Re:Zero fans explode on these haters, when some of them are so delusional.
I love the fact that you made a video on Re:Zero since it is one my personal favourites. I also agree with you about Subaru being a realistic character, if he didn't have any flaws in his character I don't think I would have fallen in love with Re:Zero as much.

Subaru is my favorite ReZero character of all time. No matter how many downs he's been through he always gets back up (or some one else helps him). To me he is the most human character I've ever read/watched with both his strengths and weakness.

I cried very manly tears when Subaru got to let everything out to Echidna for the reasons you pointed out at the end of the vid. The end of A Silent Voice (movie) was a more compact but similar emotional payout of all the rising tension and emotions, and ReZero built that up since ep 1.
I felt that "confession" to Echidna... powerful stuff
I really, reeeeeeally misunderstood Ram when she declares to Roswaal. She spent years in the mansion living a good life with her sister, but now that her sister is out of this memorys, she thinks that it was all Roswaal. Now, she thinks all of those good years were brought to her by Roswall and Roswaal alone while she had literally no one else there for her... Damn, i falled in love with some people for way less than that! xD

subaru is one of my favorite protagonists. He’s so flawed and has such a crazy downward spiral that its so satisfying to watch him slowly climb back up from that. and he has a really funny personality. i completely agree with everything you said fr fr, i love how they handled his character in this slow

Finally somebody explains well in Subaru's point of view. If I were in his place, dying a few times, I would've been too scared to do anything but my man Subaru has some balls of steel to keep moving forward, it is one of the reason why it is one of my all time favourite MC. Also for the peeps that still hates Subaru after this vid, I can guarantee you that Arc 6 Subaru is enough to change your mind.

Subaru really loves rem, but still has PTSD over the chains.
He was way too traumatized.
Subaru stopped caring about that after Rem got erased, it hurt him more that she was basically dead than being killed by her.
A confession of love to Rem by Subaru was also cut out of the anime. It happened after the white whale fight. Cut out of the anime because it doesn't make sense in the anime. The light novel is FILLED to the brim with information about thoughts, mental states, feelings and emotions.

@Silas nebulous The confession only came because Rem pretended to be dying and manipulated Subaru to say it.
On top of that, once you learn about the process Tappei went through with White Fox to create the anime, it's possible they just removed all romantic details about Rem because it wouldn't be too relevant in the future anyway. Tappei told White Fox about his future plans for the story, so they worked on the anime with that in mind. We also know that some stuff has been changed in the anime because Tappei thought it would be better that way than it was originally in the novel.
The novel, after all, was designed with Emilia and Subaru's relationship as a core part of it. Rem wasn't even originally in the story, and, even when she was put in, she wasn't planned to be a love interest. According to Tappei, it just sorta happened while he was writing.
Considering the fact that Emilia is Tappei's favorite character and a vital reason for him creating Rezero was to make Emilia's character, it would make sense that stuff like the confession was removed.
Let's be real, a lot of the people that dislike Subaru only feel that way because they ARE Subaru. He is almost too relatable to a lot of Otaku and that makes them uncomfortable when they see him from an outsiders perspective.

Thank you! I binged season one just after the start of a particularly bad period of depression, and absolutely fell in love with the show. Part of it was just how realistic Subaru's actions felt to me, that someone wrote a character to make REAL mistakes, the kind of mistakes that drive people away from you despite those mistakes coming from a good place, just warped under mental stress. (Can you guess what I was depressed about?) I didn't see it as justifying my mistakes, I just felt like I had been heard, that someone else understood the clutter in my head.
Then I heard how much people hate him as a character, and it just really bothered me. Reminded me that most people not only don't understand, they don't really care to, either. Especially my romantic interest at the time, who claimed very hard to be an "empath", but seemed to show anything but. So seeing someone else make a video trying to explain the situation is really comforting. Thank you.

Subaru is correct in not accepting help from a Witch right away
Subaru is a great character, might be easy to hate him due to his actions, but it is so realistic, many people can or have gone bat shit insane like him. Even when we didn’t know about his past, he was already great and now that we know, he became even better since there are so many aspects to relate to him and explains some of his actions and lines of thoughts. He is an extremely well written character
People like to think all high and mighty of themselves, until shit hits the fan and they realize who they really are. That's people who hate on Subaru for no reason

Thank you so much for being the person to finally speak up against those haters. Re: Zero is one of my favorite animes, specifically because of how well Subaru's crumbling mental state is portrayed. It ends up feeling like the whole Aime is Subaru's tragic backstory.

Re: Zero is literally my top 1 piece of fiction because it's literally just good at almost everything, plot, world building, and most importantly character writing and character development. Even just by the plot everything fits so perfectly and that's why I love the climaxes of Arc 4 and Arc 6. It's just unfortunate that only a few people can truly understand the series though, I mean I can't blame them if they want the story to just progress and the MC to *win*, but that's not what I'm here for and I love Re: Zero for what it does. It's never gonna leave my No. 1 spot though that's for sure.
This reminds me of Big Lebowski. When it first came out, people and critics alike completely shat on it... now it is a cult classic

I agree with all of those! Some other things you could've included was that it foreshadowed Maylie being a spy! After all the kids were saved and returned, when Subaru wakes up, villagers show all of the kids except 1, which is Maylie, having rewatched the entire anime so many times I caught this detail and it coupled with the fact that in every loop the mabeast dog always landed in Maylie's arms and Maylie was able to call it from beyond the barrier, I inferred she was a spy in the domain of some sort, whether she was planted by Roswaal or not, yea she probably was since he later used and employed both her and Elsa to assassinate Beatrice, Frederica and Petra.
Foreshadowing is definitely a thing here. I may make a video on it at some point!

Wow i didnt know someone else would see these points and agree. Re zero is one of my favorite animes. Watching it mid highschool i was very much loving subaru as he reminded me of myself. Hes such a realistic character and goofy while still managing some badass scenes. All the things he deals with are hard and he breaks down and needs support and i love it because it has substance to side characters and makes this anime mc all the more unique. Subaru is one of my favorite mc. You earned a sub my friend!

I have never understood why so many people hates Subaru, he is a teenager who was thrown into such a unknown world and experiances so many painful death's over and over and just trying to survive. No one would be completly okay after going through what he did, not to mention like you said all the memories that he now only has and the feeling of fear of losing everything. I alway's thought they did such a great job with him, because he was so human! Also, I like Rem and all, but I found it so extremly rude for her to confess the way she did, but now I understand more why she did thanks to you. I will alway's love Emilia more!!!

Personally I guess Rem was just trying to get an "I love you" from our boy. she was starting to get confident little by little back then, I think we would see some interesting scenes if she was not erased 😂
i can't agree more mahis... our mc is really a man got a strong mentality...if we look back at someone from an anime I won't say it's name when he saw his fam being killed through a genjitsu and he was fluctuating throughout the series...but our man here was going through a literal hell and he was yet standing and got through it

5:10 pretty sure barrier was to repel Hector not trap him in the sanctuary. Also subaru being transported is what he needed most. Despite being a shut in it wasn't cause he hated or feared the outside but couldn't stand the pressure of his inferiority complex. So being transported to a world where no one knew his dad was perfect for him since they would only know subaru for subaru

Not really. Tappei stated that if Subaru wasn't summoned his parents would have snapped him out of the depression spiral and lived a quite a normal life. It feels the other way around, the Re:Zero world need Subaru since most of the cast would either be dead or suffering one way or another

What he should have done was simply call out for help first, as Reinhardt was nearby in every loop. Barring that he could have at least ran OUT of the Alleyway.

(Something I never did and after 7 years I still don't do again), long short history we ended like a couple a few days after, and our we had a nice relantionship for about 5 years.
The point is that love in fist sight is not imposible, the way she was smiling to herself, while having a litle sad look in her eyes, the way she was moving the fork with hesiated, the way she smile me back when she notice that I was looking at her, how she greet me when I site in front of her. I remember everything.

Another point is that up until Julius humbled him and Emilia broke off her relationship with him, he still wasn't seeing the people of Lugunica as REAL PEOPLE, with the possible exception of Rem, and even then he wasn't 100% on her until "From Zero" where she finally asserted herself and told him what she sees in him.
Before this point, he was treating everything like a game, where he was the main character. Remember "This is something only I can do"? How many times did he say that in Season 1 before the "From Zero" moment. He still hadn't come to terms that this other world was a REAL WORLD with REAL PEOPLE, not a video game or adventure made for him.

The last point made me realize one very important truth about our word: there's so many idiots, and what's even worse, they express their stupidity louder than any intelligent person would.

All i can say is, the anime producers really faithfully adopted the source material. Specially the season 2. The Whole season just for 1 arc. (Well arc 4 is really long anyway)
At least they didnt compress it or skip some part to add another arcs.

Subaru's only problem was he never relied more on himself,he thought he could always use return by death always as a tool, rather than believing in himself and his abilities and rely less on rbd and only use it when things get irreversible even after trying your best,so when you use it you will have less pain
If you think of RBD as add-on instead of the ultimate guilty conscience and all overbearing responsibility then it's a tool.
However I think Subaru is quite attached to RBD and see it something more than just a tool but something which can trigger the sadness of people from other realities.

Subaru is my 2nd favorite protagonist of ALL TIME, right after Lelouch from Code Geass. The amount of depth and development involved with his character, the amount of detail and realism that has been put into his personality and attitude and behavior, just how three dimensional he is and how much he changes with the narrative and the story and his experiences, it's all just so freaking amazing that i'm still stunned to this day that Nagatsuki was able to write him in such a way.
I hate that people don't appreciate it as much as they should...

Subaru isnt a main character in the traditional sense, he is a regular guy just like all of us and he embodies what would likely happen with us if we were sent into that world and if you think you would act anyway other than Subaru after dying that many times then think again! Subaru is a good character but not because he is the heroic ideal of a character but because he’s realistic and relatable to the majority of us even if some of us don’t want to admit it

Something to point out. The Witch of Envy: Satella isn't Emilia like some people believe. She just took on the form of someone Subaru is comfortable around. Her actual face hasn't been revealed as of yet.

I think what bothers me the most is how people still think RBD is the most overpowered ability you could possibly have that it reaches videogame levels of broken. Sure buddy... if you ignore:
- The brutal, painful deaths you HAVE to endure. As in this ain't no save-state, death is the only activation and be lucky you don't feel ANY of them from the games you play.
- The fact that "checkpoints" are absolutely never conveyed (there are moments where Subaru made it clear that he was afraid literally EVERYTHING could just start over. Imagine after all this, he dies and sees the apple in his face again- *_OH WAIT!)_*
- And, probably the biggest one, EVERYTHING YOU DO RESETS IF YOU DONT MAKE IT TO A CHECKPOINT! The only thing that gets retained is your memory of them. People groan over doing house chores, yet people expect this highschool shut-in to just do all these mental, physical, and political gymnastics over again.
(Honestly, just go play classic Ninja Gaiden [don't] and stab yourself everytime you die _[d o n 't],_ you'll get a similar experience)
This ability is a curse at best. People would also strangely say "Just tell someone, lmao what an idiot maybe then someone can help" which is also something that has been shown you straight up cannot do. Doing so gives you painful heart attack or, if you manage to wave _that_ away somehow, unsubscribes the person you're talking to from life.
Ugh, sorry for the rant. I'm just glad to see someone else have their head screwed on tight when talking about Re:zero. Lemme tell you, the comments on VRV were quite the opposite.

i feel like suburu's character had changed from season 1 to 2, but a very slow burn sort of thing, similar to mushoku tensei.
He starts of thinking he's the op mc of this world and runs around like an idiot. After realising this he saves the day by finding the real op mc.
Then has to solve how he died in the mansion, without any understanding of the magic and the added confusion of ram and rem not trusting him and killing him.
And after succeeding this his ego is back to being inflated and his constant sacrificing of everything he now thinks he deserves amelia's affection and treats her as a defenceless child who needs to be saved. when he's rejected he's pushed to the breaking point, his mind clouded. But with rem's wise words and a whale hunt and with strategy he managed to gain a mini army and detailed plans on how to win.
The last season after acting selfless and now losing the second most precious person, suburu is almost depressed, lacking in self worth and now has to solve another mess, combining all the previous threats (a great monsters, assassins and a angry cat). And now suburu trying to save everyone has made him start to value there lives more. But due to otto, the talk with parents and even the witch of envy he gains confidence and succeeds.
And for those who think i'm overanalysing the arcs, i recommend reading the If stories which will show you what will happen if suburu didn't let go of his pride in the beginning, make the choice to save someone who had killed him twice and not give in to wrath and fear, to give up and run away leaving amelia to die, and to agree to work for the witch greed where he loses all self worth being a tool of echidna.
There is only one thing I'll correct. He was VERY MUCH depressed prob since he cried on Emilias lap, and 100% after Rems erasure. He was just hiding it from people, pushed them away and only after the Witch Tea Party, he started to crawl out of the deep end

As someone who has watched hundreds of animes and read hundreds of mangas and LN's. I can say that Subaru is definately the best MC ive seen.

I have met many people that always say nothing make sense or it's repetitive. All I have to do is sit them down tell them to watch the rest of then come back to me and we can start answering some questions. Then that leads to them asking even more questions, it's shocking when people realize they shouldn't take everything at face value.

Subaru is a very misunderstood character, because as you said this video. People always complain that subaru is annoying, but like no shit he is, thats the whole point of his character at the first half of re:zero.
I love the way tappei (the author of re:zero) shows subaru's self hatred, it isnt always directly shown that he hates himself, but also when he hates people similar to him, for example: Petelguse, he hates petelguse, but petelguse is subaru; if he was more fucked up and driven into insanity. And also with Regulus Corneas, but that is more in the Wn, not the anime.
The crazy thing is that Subaru through the series and the WN, slowly represents all of the sins making him "Human" the sins: Sloth, lust, ect are supposed to be humanity's sins, if i remember correct, and when subaru, someone who represents them all is indeed human. He is gluttonus, lustful, slothful, prideful, greedy, envious, and he is wrathful. Some of these might not make sense to anime watchers, but i can assure you that they all fit his character.

In a certain app where I watched Re:Zero, the people keeps on telling why is he weak or why is he not making rational desicion or why etc...etc... C'mon, people do not come from several deaths (with pain and all the experience of death with it) looking good and thinking straight. Also after seeing all his friends dying (which is also several times) adds up to his mental problems. Even having balls of steel does not mean he also have his brain made of steel.
They don't just understand him and proceeded to hate him because they don't understand him. Well that's how society functions however. No blaming here. We have our own opinions.

Re: zero's plot is convoluted, but not too convoluted for its on good. On the contrary, once you're immersed in it, you can't stop wondering about all of the mysteries of that world. And it gets even more satisfying as you discover how vast and well built that world actually is, with zero unexplainable plot holes so far. It's one of those very few shows that will make you forget about reality for a while and you'll be tempted to read the novels to satisfy the craving for a new season. It will do that to you with no warning, it's like an infinite cliffhanger that always pays off.
If it keeps this up until the end, it won't just be an anime masterpiece but one of the best fantasy stories in general.
Also it's very re-watchable, and with each viewing you'll keep picking up on details you didn't catch before. And it has the most S-tier waifus per square foot of any anime ever.

*There is a reason why anime Subaru is more hated character then LN Subaru.* They are the same character, BUTT there is a slight change in how he is introduced to a viewer/reader.
I think we all think that Subaru is a fantastic character... well we ended up thinking that AFTER we hated him while watching Re:Zero for the first time. This is very common thing and I know why.
Subaru was a classic isekai generic character for those first 2 arcs in anime. He was not that shiny in design, not that super special in characteristics. We didn't really see his flaws up until royal election. If he had flaws the viewer couldn't tell what they were without deep analytics. First time watching is too early for analytics, so the maximum we could call him was him being "strange".
In episode 12 seeing Subaru being selfish, egoistic, egocentric, unreasonably disrespecting to everyone around and even cringy too was a BIG surprise for the viewer. We didn't understand why he is behaving like that. We DIDN'T SEE this kind of behavior from him before. All this time he was a simple isekai character until this very moment when Subaru OUTBURSTED with all this filth we didn't expect.
The character we were introduced to felt like completly different one and he never came back to what he was. Our character we already got used to was butchered and reborn as something alien.
This is in anime. BUTT in LN royal election scene never was THAT hard to go through. The reason is not this scene being slightly changed, but every other BEFORE that one.
In LN we were introduced to Subaru that we trully know him to be. Reading LN maximum we could call him wasn't him being "strange". *He was a dick right from the start.* He appeared kinda crazy in head. And it worked well. YOU and every OTHER CHARACTER had the same thoughts towards Subaru. THAT was good introduction.
So we see him being crazy, disrespectful, egoistic, egocentric and selfish all the time but it was ok. He is such a character. You and other characters got used to him. Up until royal election scene we already knew what Subaru actually is and reading along we won't be shocked by his behavior. It wasn't out of nowhere this time.
BUTT anime decided to make Subaru quite more likeable for the viewer. Thus he became a nice guy, wasn't a douchebag like he was supposed to. Now it's more likely people will love him, right?... right..? NO!
Well, aclually it could work. Changing the characteritics sometimes isn't a big deal at all. But not in the story where this exact selfishness filth pushes the plot forward. Subaru's behavior on royal election could not be avoided anyhow. You can't make him get beaten up and humiliated by any other reason. Plot in arc 1 and 2 just kinda happened by outside reasons, but this time it is Subaru who is pushing the plot because of him being what he trully was this all time.
This slight change forced viewers to like Subaru, lately forcing the same people to hate him for becoming completely different character out of nowhere.
Ye, biggest mistake i'd say. I myself can't watch throught episode 12 even thou I rewatched Re:Zero 6 times already. 11 episodes of following the character before this massacre at episode 12 is too much even for fan like me.

You could explain it by how the success of saving Emilia and the mansion within a week in other people's eyes (and the amount of praise he got from Rem for a month) got to his head at that point.

I always thought of Subaru as a flawed but amazing person as he's written. He didn't always understand what he did was wrong when he did mess up, but was quick to learn his lesson and better the lives of those around him. The white whale arc cemented this for me, leading the charge and avenging all the lives the whale permanently erased.

It amuses me how people call Rem a waify, and sympathize with her in that moment. In reality, they are belittling her act of selfless love, presenting it as a way to get Subaru for themselves. Even though she already knew what he would say to her, so they laughed together about it.

Man i couldn't agree more with what you said, i find Subaru to be one of the best characters in anime no joke, like through all the hell he is put in he just kept going and going although he made a lot of mistakes but so would you and that is what makes him a good character he is realistic as heck he has flaws but so do you and everyone else but he got the support he needed and got back up on his feet and by the end of season 2 he became unbreakable the current Subaru is probably the strongest Subaru that we will ever see (strong will that is)

Honestly I really like Subaru as a character, he's extremely relatable because of his flaws. Many people would have given up completely even sooner than he did, he is constantly experiencing traumatic scenarios and is unable to even share those experiences with most people. It's no wonder he fell victim to despair on several occasions. But with help from others he was able to turn things around for the better, with Rem being the only exception to this rule at the moment. (Haven't read the manga so I don't know her fate beyond what the anime has shown.)

Subaru is such a well written Mc. He is flawed and is realistic, people expect him to be like Goku or Naruto, Overpowered characters who rarely make mistakes. Subaru is like anyone else who would get teleported to another world with magic, weak, making multiple mistakes and not mentally in it. He has his goals that he wants to achieve but struggles to achieve them and pays the price

Honestly... the title doesn't lie. It all makes 100% perfect sense (no joke). About Subaru, personally I really like the character mainly because he is very relatable and realistic unlike other Isekai where the MC is basically super overpowered who fears nothing and just one shots everything in their way. Subaru is very different... and in a great way. He is perfectly flawed and his character development and all of his pain can easily be felt by the viewer.
For example: that moment when he broke into tears to Echidna after she confronted to him that she is aware of his "Return By Death" was very realistic and painful since Subaru couldn't tell anyone about it and he had to just bear all of that pain within him for so long while constantly dying in different and horrible ways that break him mentally.
TLDR:
In my opinion Subaru is perfectly flawed.
That moment with Echidna was a string one, absolutely loved it!

I'm probably more physically capable then Subaru but he is definitely smarter than I am. He has been able to come up with solutions to certain problems within a days matter even under all this panic and stress. Whereas with me I would probably take much longer or I would do the same thing again but expect what will happen since I'm better at doing things like this on the spot. So if Subaru's "correctness" is a 10/10 then I would be a 5/10 just because I don't really know what it's like so I can't give a solid answer.

Great video, particularly the Subaru part. I honestly can't understand why people hate him. I've watched many isekai and hero shows and also heard/known about way more, but I've never encountered a MC who would be weak, depending on other people, unable to protect others, mentally unstable and basically powerless all together, just like Subaru. Like, wouldn't you cry or be brainwashed after all of the things that happened to Subaru happened to you instead? It's a miracle that this guy can still smile after all of that, and he manages to push forward in the name of love and friendship.
The reason is everybody's wet dream of isekaing into an all-powerful character. People don't want to see their actual self in those situations and start hating, because they recognize themselves.

I watched the first season of this anime ; and it immidiately rise up to my top 1 Anime because of one thing , THE REAL PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT , the way the writer approched that side is so damn realistic ; just the idea of knowing when you'll die is like a living hell , a book has been written about that feeling called "the last day of a condemned man" in 1829 by the famous Victor Hugo , describing the psychological hell that people on death penalty lives . I love and i'll love this anime to the end . Thanks for the video my brother .
