Thanks for this! I have found MMP to be a much different chipping medium and this has really helped me better understand how you go about it. The ratios are not usually working for me either and I know a lot of factors are at play so I like that you show what to look for with the cup drip. I have a few projects that are built but that I'm not very invested in, I think they will make good test pieces for refining my MMP chipping process. I think I've gone with too many layers of HS and too much water in the past. Take care!

Keep at it, I discarded the prescribed thinning ratios with most of my airbrushing -- the visual runoff test is accurate to the conditions you're spraying in and that matters most of all (ie. humidity, temp, etc.).
"If it doesn't flow then it's a no-go (bumper sticker coming soon...) lol
With HS + MMP... as mentioned quite a bit over the past couple of years, HS has denatured alcohol as the prime ingredient, and MMP is hyper-sensitive to the smallest amounts of alcohol (why I say NO IPA cleaners, thinners, etc.)... instead, current teachings are to use a water-based chipping fluid from one of the brands, or just skip it altogether.
MMP chips perfectly well without HS/CF too, as shown on many videos here too (StuG, Cromwell, IDF Churchill...). Lots of misinformation and half-truths still prevalent in the hobby, and I will continue to repeat the demos/conversations to show you guys how to maximize its potential.
If you must (or have to) use HS, then go back to a normal acrylic etc. There's no advantage to using it with MMP because its sensitivity to alcohol. Switch the process to pure water or water-based products and you'll see big improvements.

@@rs.p Thanks for this additional knowledge in the comment! I appreciate you taking the time to write it up and reemphasizing that reaction to the alcohol based HS. That really makes sense to the kinds of effects I was running into. Back then it seemed like the base paint itself was reactivating or never actually cured properly but could have been the result of layering the hairspray over fresh MMP base layer and that alcohol reaction. The chemical knowledge you bring to the table and your discussions about what is happening and why is incredibly valuable. LOL and I'll snag one of those bumper stickers as soon as they're released!! 🤣🤣

@@BrailleScale My pleasure, and yes, once we solved the alcohol related issue, it became a whole lot easier and more successful. It's so capable, making the switch is worth it. ;)

Hi Mike I’m a little late to the party but is there an optimum time to start chipping once the coat you want to chip it has dried?

Chipping can typically occur soon, usually after painting is completed and the airbrushed cleaned etc. Some paints like longer cure times for best results, most of the time, sooner in the application stages the better the results tend to be.

Thanks, Mike for the reply. I had a poor result with my first chipping attempt but I think it was through spraying too thicker coats of hairspray. I started using MM paints and got better results I was looking for with just burnishing (Olive drab WW11 Jeep) but I suspect I’ll lose some of the effects when clear-coating which I’ll need to do for the decals. Thanks again for your comments.@@rs.p
