I hope there are potential downsides for just simply recruiting all your enemies, like they do bad things, betray you, lower your approval, etc. It would also play into your ability to judge a person's character and talents, which is important for a leader.
Good alternative is forcing choices between units. "Pick this unit, you can't get that unit." And like, recruiting some enemies will bar you from getting a better unit somewhere down the line.

I find it really interesting how varied the optional gains for denying/executing some characters are. Some give rewards that're arguably just as good as a whole ass character, some give marginally arguable rewards, some give stuff that'll be lesser in the longrun, and some just... give you nothing. looking forward to seeing how much this variation continues into the full game.

It seems like there's no moral meter in this game. It's a shame. The Ogre Battle games had this and it directly affected who joins you. The ending was affected too.
I'm surprised Alain does not have a choice dialogue such as "Those who hath turned their cloaks hold no coin to bargain for mercy's breath." when asked to spare their men.
The only execution I would've done would probably be Gammel but Gammel and Mandrin joining you down the line is such a huge gain that it's tough to miss out on, particularly when you're trying to not use mercenaries.

Even divine shards are a grindey but infinite resource from mining. Only strong argument for executions is if you’re doing a really min/maxed challenge or speed run, or a deliberate “execute everyone” run.
Monica and Mandrin giving a total of 45 divine stones make VERY compelling case to not get them. Specially Mandrin since he alone can get you Ochlys very early

@@GloriousGEO Refusing these recruitment usually grant some item likes if that's not for nothing, so it's fine enough if you don't want to build those unit or in generic only run. Well unless if the item you get is also the the item that unit come with and also unless that unit name is Melisandre (choose to execute 2 units for nothing which does sound anti-climatic to me)

my first Execution/subjucating choice was Gammel and I loved the Idea of sparing people can lead to some future consequences and vise versa when you Execute them (Mordon with the bridge quest). I was ready to kill him in Elhiem when the story is scripted to just letting him go. at that point I Realized that there are no consequences of recruiting psycho paths or executing good people.
Is there actually any reason you shouldn't just recruit everyone you can? Like in the SNES Ogre Battle game, recruiting some characters will close the door on recruiting other characters that may have a grudge against the people you have in your army. Alternatively, killing some people would drops some powerful or unique items that might actually be more useful than having an extra character. Does Unicorn do anything similar to this?

I've been doing a bit of research before buying, and it's quite a disappointment to learn there isn't any karma or alignment system, and that there is just one proper ending. Will probably still play it as it looks and feels stunningly beautiful... But man I was hoping for an modern update of the whole PR side of staging a rebellion...

Not really, in the early game the rewards you get from executing the black tallon members can somewhat help with your early game economy and makes one future side quest harder but long term it’s not worth it. The others are just straight up shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t recruit them. in fact not recruiting some characters locks you out of future side quests or recruiting other characters.
Monica, Mandrin, Tatiana, Gammel, Mordon, Berenice, and Auch. All worth killing/refusing. But that's just my opinion. If you like a character, uh, don't kill them. Sharon gives you a lucky coin if she joins you which is super helpful. The rest give no rewards at all.

I do hope there is greater impact and dialogue for these choices. So far its just Alain coping and gaslighting himself everytime he decides to kill someone. Even in actual war without self-righteous princes becoming a pow was still a prevalent result of capture rather than execution.

You can change a story unit's growths after a certain point and growths are fixed and will change retroactively if altered
