  • This nostalgic series: ABCTV~1975.. repeated only once & never to be seen again.. so it seems. the DVD is a mere dream.. & the series itself alive only in our memories.
    So glad to have uploaded this on the 5th of May ( the anniversary of the death of the real Ben hall ) ..the pictures for this clip are taken from my precious copy of a special booklet sold in newsagents just before the repeat of the series. ..making this was a joyous re-union with an early precious memory ..eg. i was only about 10 years old when the credits rolled for the last time. Dedicated to Ben Hall fans everywhere.

    Just heard of Jon's passing in late December.
    So very sad that he died alone, in virtual obscurity.
    RIP you beautiful, handsome man.

    I was 4 or 5 when I saw this great series, loved it!
    Had the ABC magazine of the "making of..." (still do), I would look at that thing for hours.
    Also still have a photo of me dressed a Ben Hall for a kindy fancy dress ball.
    Can't believe it hasn't been released on DVD.

    I remember this being on Sunday Evenings around 1975, It really stood out as being the only Aussie 'Western' of it's kind on the box (in the UK) with some evocative, melodic, music.

    Thank you so much for putting this reminder of a wonderful series up on TH-cam. I was pregnant when this was on in 1975, so maybe my hormones were a bit off kilter, but I cried like a hound at the end. For several days...! Loved Jon Finch, God rest him, and Vincent Ball who played his nemesis, the policeman. The girl who played his wife Biddie was marvellous as well. Beautiful music too - used to play the theme tune on my recorder. Soft, eh? So glad others remember it fondly too.

    Me too, Kay Marshall! I went to my room and prayed and cried myself to sleep, knowing he'd gone but still wanted to try and make his and Biddy's suffering less. I loved them! I was also 10 or 11... Man I love the tune at 4:10! Wish they'd replay this series for today's kids to see.

    I remember watching the series when I was growing up. It is a shame that it hasn't been shown since its only repeat. Because my grandfather lived in Forbes, we got to know a lot about his and went to some of the sites that Ben made famous. We hear more about Ned Kelly when as I have found out about Ben Hall he was more colourful and more tragic.

    I contacted ABC some years ago and they told me that copyright was co-owned with another production company, I think maybe in Germany, and therefore it was extremely unlikely that it would ever be released on DVD etc. Such a shame as like so many others I adored this series and would so much love to see it again.

    Ben Hall is actually my great,great,great, uncle - via my grandmother.
    Ned Kelly gets all the attention, and yet Ben WAS the gentleman bushranger who never killed anyone.

      Hello Adam,
      I have visited Ben's grave in Forbes cemetery on a couple of occasions. I grew up in and around Canowindra, and it was probably fair to say that the townsfolk considered him a fairly important part of our little town's history.

    • @HMASJervisBay

      ***** I am terribly sorry my friend but that never ever happened, see my website, benhallbushranger, com the night Hall was arrested their was no stock in the yard, plus his brother William and his wife Anne along with the pregnant Susan Prior, Hall's girlfriend, lived at Hall's hut into early 1863. This misinformation has over time and is still being perpetuated wrongly today. Hall was a desparate and cruel bushranger who by shear good luck but not through lack of effort failed to kill anyone, as Inspector Norton experienced, Hall had known Gilbert and O'Meally since the late 1850's. He could of led a prosperous life but he chose poorly. Please be carefull and see beyond the supposedly long suffering and hard done by criminal for what He and the others were murderous thugs, but I do love the history. All the best Mark Matthews

      ***** My dear Sir, How dare you call me a troll, your ignorance of history is deafening, nobody is walking or wiping boots on anyones grave, Ben Hall was a criminal, how he arrived at that point is fascinating, I have been investigating through historical research, letters and government archives for over 40yrs, correlating and cross checking the evidence available, I have visited and attended anniversaries of significant events, and produce the most comprehensive information available through my website, and as new information is reveled adjust it.I will not be drawn into some childish rant by the ignorant, "Fiat justitia ruet coelum". If Ben Hall had led the life as hundreds of thousands of others had done, and had continued to be an honest hardworking, loyal, fair minded citizen, then there would be no reason to defend him only praise him. All the best Mark Matthews- Ps I have also contributed funds for the upcoming movie, see link on the home page.

    Hard to believe it was only shown twice. What a terrible waste when we have to put up with endless repeats of more recent fare and so little Australian drama content these days. Surely they didn't tape over it. I don't care if it is in black and white - I would love to see it again. This was an excellent series.

    There is a movie now in production about Ben Hall. Hopefully this may prompt the ABC into re-releasing the Mini series on TV or even DVD. From what I have heard, the movie is going to be released in Forbes on the 150th anniversary of Ben Hall's death, 5th May 2015.

    The ABC should reformat and release all their early historical Australian drama series such as this one and others, Stormy Petrel for example which they have in their archives. Just need some creative people to negotiate copyright.

    • @theturnermator
      @theturnermator 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that you'll ever get to see this again, unfortunately. I think that if the ABC were to tell you the truth, you'd be shocked to find that it was common in those days to wipe the tape for re-use. It's a common belief that the ABC has series such as this sitting in its archive, but the real reason you can't get your hands on this series is more likely that it no longer exists.

    • @miketyne2771
      @miketyne2771 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Turner In reference to Stormy Petrel I believe the ABC has the complete series in reels held at the National Archives, Chester Hill NSW under the Series Number C475 Control Symbol Arch 92F/0013 Episodes 8502626 - 8502669 including extra copies of some reels. But in the last 10yrs someone has been nominated to hold copyright. The reformatting of this series may not be desirable by the ABC being made in black and white.
