I’m into over 200 beaver in my life. I’ve changed a lot of methods since my first 10 or so that I fleshed flat , no beam with a hatchet lol. Even in the late 80s with the pickiest of buyers. I always got top price. I realized good fur work and what it was by Joe Edminister a well known buyer back then in Minnesota. At age 12 I brought my first beaver in and case skinned it like a muskrat hahahaha. (Cought in a 1 1/2 longspring for muskrats) . Joe spent a afternoon in his fur house teaching me right from wrong. His main point was no matter your method a clean pelt if you do it yourself. As he said the slowest but one of the cleanest ways for me with no fleshing beam was flat like I described. Obviously I grew in talent since my youth and gained many tools and got where I could only laugh at the hours I cut down in prep work after taking a day to build a good beam and after demo I watched at a trapping convention I could get r done. Then came life and the fur price drops. I’m ready again in life to go like hell this spring. I’m glad I watched this . Since my days drying beave4 I knew things changed with faces etc. I know now to 1) slice the nose 2) clip the ears 3) round the tail area then trim 4) round the face lips 5) I can find 1/2 scrap plywood that with my nail method are too small 6) STAPLES WORK GOOD Thank you for the information. 28 years now since I dried and fleshed any. I skin and ball up them to sell green. I am going to make dream catchers next summer using your home tanning method as well. I avoided trapping beaver for the last 20 years due to prices. In my part of Minnesota there literally has to be 25 times the beaver as in the 80s and no trapping competition like back then. So I want to take my traps out. With the same efforts I’d catch a dozen I’m hoping for 50 and I do believe in this number as ez to acquire . My plan has me expecting 50-100. So I gotta figure out something to help my lot
anyone who gets into trapping and putting up fur I help as much as I can, but I also tell them to watch all your videos because you really know what your doing , I watch them all the time , great job man
backyardmeat right on we start monday. problem is right now im working ten hour days an hour an a half away from home. come on cold weather so they shut down for winter.
Top lot for Miss Beaver!! Way to go. I've gotten top lot for red fox 1 time and i felt so proud! Maybe one day when I grow up I can get top lot for my beaver and otter. As many as I put up you would figure by now 🤔
Great video sir! Hey Stu, do you insert newspaper in between your finished beaver skins? i will have a bunch this fall but will be a few months until they are shipped to FHA? Cheers.
David Williams the beaver will not rot as it was put through a fleshing process before he boarded it. By fleshing the meat and fat off he’s only leaving the layer of the dermis which holds the fur and the epidermis (outer portion) both of which can dry out naturally. If he left fat and meat on the hide it would rot as bacteria,etc... can easily penetrate those tissues, but skin is special as it has protective properties that prevent those same issues from occurring, such as it’s density and cellular structure.
i like the idea of how quick this is vs nail .. my question is for a guy that boards 50-100 beavers a year what is the cost in staples ?? what do you pay
Love your videos. You are my go to when I have questions about fur handling. Got 4 beaver last week. Got them all skinned out. I plan to render the tails down but am thinking about trying to make some beaver leather. I hear it's a bit tedious. Do you ever make beaver leather? Any tips tricks? Would love a video on this. Any advice would be great. Hope you and yours are well!
Your videos are awesome i just switched to using a stapler for putting up beaver but I am wondering if there is a easier method for removing the staples once the beaver are dry
Eric Peddle Arrow makes a stapler with a spacer attachment. this is they one I have maybe some others manufactures do as well. You can also glue / zip tie or some how attach a spacer of some sort under the stapler so the staples will not go in as deep. I like using 17/32" or 9/16" staples some I have enough sticking out to get a pair of pliers under if needed. best of luck
I'm new, so this might be dumb but... I noticed from the nailing videos I watched that theres space for air to go under the beaver (I'm assuming to help dry). I like the stapling idea better... but do you think there would be any benefit to cut a small (8 or so inch) hole in the middle of the board to help airflow? Thanks for all the videos, you've been a huge help!
A wide flat head screwdriver with a v notch cut in the center of the flat part makes a great staple remover! Especially with the staples that are a lil tighter to the board
Okay, so LAST QUESTION... The most important thing I need to know... How do you dry them? You just leave em on the board in the shop for a couple weeks? No salt or anything used?
I've been practicing late,y with roadkill's and i found a recent beaver the other day. do you treat your beavers with any tanning solutions to preserve the hide prior to tacking it down or do you just allow it to dry naturally? I want to try and get the hide to be flexible and soft but from what i often see, the hides are dried and left flat and hard.
+SinZonde this video shows how to prepare the hide to be sold in the fur trade. it does nothing to preserve the hide for a long period of time. in order to do this you will have to tan it
the nice thing with nails though is that you can pull the pelt up on the nails away from the board to give you an air gap between the board and fur. speeds up drying time and if the pelt is wet at all alows the fur to dry also.
Is there a way to save the ears? I just skinned my first beaver tonight by following your part one video. It is small, maybe 25 pounds. I don't need it to look good for anyone but me, and I really like the ears... can it be done? thanks for these videos by the way, super helpful!
+rachel pye you can leave the ears just make sure there is alot of air getting to them. the ears are generally taken off because they have no value in the fur trade and on the bigger ones especially they can spoil and cause slippage
Great video but please do a follow up on removing the pelt from the board and removing all of those staples. I have used the staple method but had to spend way too much time trying to get them all out.
Ive gotta say, youve REALLY got your stuff together. Pretty darn official. I have to ask again, whats the exact brand of fleshing knife youre using on your last video? Cause I trust your choice in tools.
TandEwildlife its really not bad at all. most can be pulled out by hand or with they aid of small pliers. about 2-3 min per beaver. I have a video on it I will post soon
dylan mcmurray there are many methods. but one dispatch hole will not affect the price. I'm not going to discuss dispatch openly. if you want you can PM me and I will further help you out.
Love your videos. Between you and 330 maniac I have learned a ton and just scored my first two Beavers through the ice last weekend. Thanks
Thank you for your video. Most people don’t appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into fur handling. Well done.

Timothy Holloway
Jesus H. Christ just make a video next time. 🙄 If we wanted to read a book then we’d be on Audible instead of TH-cam.
Long but a good story. Hope the best for you ole friend
anyone who gets into trapping and putting up fur I help as much as I can, but I also tell them to watch all your videos because you really know what your doing , I watch them all the time , great job man
Thanks
8 years ago and still a great video!

Thanks for making the videos man I'm catching almost 20 to 25 beaver a year this will help a lot
Another really great series man, thanks for taking the time to put together! ......11 days and counting!
backyardmeat right on we start monday. problem is right now im working ten hour days an hour an a half away from home. come on cold weather so they shut down for winter.
love all your videos, they have really helped me to become better at tanning my own hides.
Thanks for making these videos !!! Got 4 beavs in the boat I gotta get to work !!
Always like your videos . It's your attention to the small details that make your products better than others . Thanks for sharing !!
+Ray Lentz thanks
very nicely done, your instructional videos are the best on TH-cam, thanks for sharing.
STREETERBOYZOUTDOORS thanks
Very informational just caught my first beaver and you videos have really been helpful.thanks
You did good work, thanks for sharing the details of cleaning the beaver.
Top lot for Miss Beaver!! Way to go. I've gotten top lot for red fox 1 time and i felt so proud! Maybe one day when I grow up I can get top lot for my beaver and otter. As many as I put up you would figure by now 🤔
Very nicely done. Easy to understand and hopefully I will be half as good when I do my first.
+Salmon Hunter thanks
Just wanted to let let you know that I am new to trapping and your videos have helped me alot. Please keep them coming.. Thanks for the good work..
Darrin Stevens thanks
So after you board them, then you tan em?
Keep a loose beaver at all times...nothin' like a loose beaver 🤣 lm a northern Illinois trapper, love your vids...
Great video sir! Hey Stu, do you insert newspaper in between your finished beaver skins? i will have a bunch this fall but will be a few months until they are shipped to FHA? Cheers.
I have a question. How you stop the beaver from rotting with it laying flat on plywood where no air can get under and around the whole hide. Thanks.
David Williams the beaver will not rot as it was put through a fleshing process before he boarded it. By fleshing the meat and fat off he’s only leaving the layer of the dermis which holds the fur and the epidermis (outer portion) both of which can dry out naturally. @4:09 okay listen up ladies!! lmao sorry, it's 4am lol
Excellent video. What do you do with all that meat you shaved off the hide the fur. Do you cook it for your dogs?...
thanks for the education u have aquirred very great skills thanks , what diamiter are the 2 flehing beams.

Thanx again
Your videos are awesome i just switched to using a stapler for putting up beaver but I am wondering if there is a easier method for removing the staples once the beaver are dry
Eric Peddle do you have a spacer on your stapler, so they are not driven in all the way
No just bought a bostitch stapler and started using was just pulling some off boards and they don't come out very well
Did you make one or can you buy a spacer
Eric Peddle Arrow makes a stapler with a spacer attachment. this is they one I have maybe some others manufactures do as well. You can also glue / zip tie or some how attach a spacer of some sort under the stapler so the staples will not go in as deep. I like using 17/32" or 9/16" staples some I have enough sticking out to get a pair of pliers under if needed. best of luck
you are so pro man ,thanks for all the videos
+Murray Supreme Air thanks
How long does it need to dry on the board before it can be tanned?
How did you modify the staple gun?
I'm new, so this might be dumb but... I noticed from the nailing videos I watched that theres space for air to go under the beaver (I'm assuming to help dry). I like the stapling idea better... but do you think there would be any benefit to cut a small (8 or so inch) hole in the middle of the board to help airflow? Thanks for all the videos, you've been a huge help!
Your videos are great man! Really have learned alot. Thanks!!
joe rager thanks
A wide flat head screwdriver with a v notch cut in the center of the flat part makes a great staple remover! Especially with the staples that are a lil tighter to the board
Did you make the stencil for the lines on the beaver board? If not, where did you get it?
Learning tons from you! Thanks. How long do you keep it on the board?
Okay, so LAST QUESTION... The most important thing I need to know... How do you dry them? You just leave em on the board in the shop for a couple weeks? No salt or anything used?
Cool air with circulation
I've been practicing late,y with roadkill's and i found a recent beaver the other day. do you treat your beavers with any tanning solutions to preserve the hide prior to tacking it down or do you just allow it to dry naturally? +SinZonde this video shows how to prepare the hide to be sold in the fur trade. it does nothing to preserve the hide for a long period of time. in order to do this you will have to tan it
How did you make your staples gun
Is it important to get air circulation between the board and fur side of the pelt to aid in drying?
I use the stapler on small pelts. What is the trick for removing them on the Beavers? It does make a nice presentation. Thanks
+Scott Kneeland small pair of plies. 2-3 min on a 2xl beaver
Do you get enough air on the fur side with staple
We always used nails and lift the pelt up off the board
what do your finished products look like
the nice thing with nails though is that you can pull the pelt up on the nails away from the board to give you an air gap between the board and fur. speeds up drying time and if the pelt is wet at all alows the fur to dry also.
NADJIWON CRITTERCONTROL yeah to each his own. there are pros and cons to both
You could cut air holes in the plywood.
Is there a way to save the ears? I just skinned my first beaver tonight by following your part one video. It is small, maybe 25 pounds. I don't need it to look good for anyone but me, and I really like the ears... can it be done?

+rachel pye you can leave the ears just make sure there is alot of air getting to them. the ears are generally taken off because they have no value in the fur trade and on the bigger ones especially they can spoil and cause slippage
hey stu great video series i was wondering is that pressure treated plywood and is that essential
+Shane Haskell no its not treated
How many times have you stapled your fingers?
Is there a particular reason that you have to board/skin beaver differently than other animals
Great series!
+Mjolnir794 thanks
Great video have you ever stapled your finger?
Great video but please do a follow up on removing the pelt from the board and removing all of those staples. I have used the staple method but had to spend way too much time trying to get them all out.
@Randy Bingham I would like to see the adapter so I might be able to duplicate it.
About how long do you leave it on the board drying?
GREAT series! Thanks brother. Subscribing.
you really do a great job on the videos . How many miles is your trap line. Do you work construction ?
I understand you trade at NAFA, have you ever tried GMVF?
Very nice job!! Thanks for sharing.
BeaverRick thanks
Can you recommend a company that's sells critter skins ?
how long do you keep it on the board?
Great job explaining learned a lot
northcarolinatrapper b thanks
Awesome series and how to brother this will help me a lot it being my first season virgin trapper lol👍🤘👊
Great series, Thank You.
+High Desert Hollow thanks
how long should hides be left on a stretcher?
TheOldGunsmith58 it depends on temp and air circulation, typically about a week for beaver
wow excellent presentation. good job man, nice tutorial
Ive gotta say, youve REALLY got your stuff together. Pretty darn official. I have to ask again, whats the exact brand of fleshing knife youre using on your last video? Cause I trust your choice in tools.
Post
Nice job
Are you a furbuyer or do only put up your own catches?
+Buckhorn Outdoors I only put up my own stuff
staple king for sure ,
where are you from?
Good way to make holes for the stitching!!!
i canot find your pattern in canada where did you get yours
+dnm511 bought it from fnt post several years ago
I need a whole series of this for coat making or for survival coat
how do you take it off the board
+Seth Brissette pull the staples
Whats your technique getting those staples out?
TandEwildlife its really not bad at all. most can be pulled out by hand or with they aid of small pliers. about 2-3 min per beaver. I have a video on it I will post soon
You need one of those
Spinner things that sits under the plywood that all you need to do is turn it, stand in one spot
What size is your plywood?
Mason Wilkins 1/2"
thanks and have a great season
+dnm511 you as well
Could you show use how to make the guide for the staple gun
If you cage trap what is the best way to put down the animal without putting a hole in the skin?
dylan mcmurray there are many methods. but one dispatch hole will not affect the price. I'm not going to discuss dispatch openly. if you want you can PM me and I will further help you out.
Its round like a shield!
Is realy good😏
Any chance u would email me the modification u done to the staple gun
awsome video , ty
Fur brush,,,, for your beaver,,,,, HAHAHAHA,,,, I know I'm a child.
When I think 'Professional Beaver Handling' this isn't what came to mind. Me: "Oh an actual beaver...heh lol." Cool video.
How the hell do you make any money doing this? You must have used the $14 worth of fur in staples alone lol
Still here to the end
cool intro
Pro
Poor beaver D: hopefully it was put to good use
The more the merrier 😂
I counted 256 staples
That’s not gonna be fun to unboard
Definitely gonna be some shrinkage when ur dealing with a big bever like that...
Not my gum drop buttons!!!
Get rekt Beaver - RIP.
What's up
Hi
This thing may not be that compassion to animals
Please stop this thing
Dont care how pro u are u dont staple a beaver pelt lol just use steel push pins or 2 inch nails buddie holy shit ..
