I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Love the Owner Haymaker for this exact reason
yep!
That's a great, simple, common sense tip, that many anglers never think of!! Great video!!! Totally agree!!! You da MAN!!
thanks!
You and Randy give THE BEST tips for fishing, even for this 60-something year old! Thank you!
Glad to help
Yes I thoroughly agree that bending the hook out on all your hooks is best... But also we have to remember to check and see how sharp it is... Sometimes they are not sticky sharp to where they dig into your fingernail easily and immediately... We must hone them with a stone... And then we are absolutely ready to fish with it... I test the sharpness of every hook this way before I fish with it... And I believe that that is just as important as bending the tip up a little!!!
agreed
I've heard about doing this from some of the old timers. At first I thought they were just yanking my chain. But one day I accidentally bent a hook out on a jig just a tiny bit getting it off a log, I was too lazy to push it back down. Long story short - that white Arkie jig is currently in my hall of fame of retired baits.
awesome!
Yes I agree and I did that back when I fished tournaments. I don't think about it as much now just fun fishing, so thanks for the reminder. Hey it's 5:55 PM and you can still see outside.
getting lighter outside
Another reason for this with Texas rig hooks, is that the eye and the hook point are on the same plane. The hook point should be above the eye, to account for the body of the bait. When a plastic bait is Texas rigged, the "nose" is penetrated in the middle. If the hook point is level with the eye, that means the hook point would have to be buried level in the body of the bait for it to hang straight. Sometimes, that's a whole lot of plastic to penetrate, instead of the small "skin hook" needed to retain weedlessness.
You have to either bend the point out as described here, or find a hook where the point sits above the eye.
thanks for sharing!
Bend the hook point out a tad helps also with that bending up. Tight lines Matt.
yep
Good luck on tour Matt. You're on my fantasy team!
Awesome!
I understand the concept for sure. It's been said for years by many pros to bend out the frog hook to increase hook ups. I ran across an interesting video from a frog pro that says absolutely, Do Not Bend Out Frog Hooks. I thought that was interesting because I know he played a big part in designing some frogs for strike king. I have been using the new owner haymaker hook that basically is already bent out from the manufacturer. I use a lot of straight shank hooks as well. Thanks for sharing the great video's and tips.
thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks for the tip! Make perfect sense. Can't wait for the water to soften up so I can get back out there.
You and me both!
I cannot tell you how much I agree with you on this topic, I do this always with my jigs and texas rigs, make a considerable difference!!!
awesome!
Perfect timing, I was just talking to my brother about doing this, I use the owner weighted hooks with the screw keeper, when rigging it with a soft plastic jerk bait you miss a lot of hook sets or the fish throws the hook. I told him that I bend the point out just so that points up a tiny bit and my hook up ratio greatly improved. It works!!
its does!
Excellent tip for other species too. Crappie expert Richard Gene the Fishing machine does this same technique with his crappie jigs.
nice!
Matt thanks for all the new tips.
You bet!
Matt, thank you for the tip. I am currently organizing my tackle boxes and will take this opportunity to look at the hook angles. I lost some good ones last year so I’m looking forward to seeing a difference this year. Great tip!
Nice!
Matt from a previous video I’m cutting a few of the back strands of the back weed guard off and trimming a lot of the inside strands of the skirt really seems to get me more bites, with this tip hopefully I’ll land a few more of the those bites. I’ve been missing quite a few big bites lately and figured they were just grabbing the tail of my swim jig with swim bait trailer. I just bought a few smaller trailers hopefully with opening up the hook a little I’ll increase the amount of fish I land.
sounds good!
Great tip for sure.I always bend it up a c hair and also bend it the other way like 3° on my ewg hooks alot
awesoome!
Great tip Matt! Do this on frogs, but not jigs & hooks. Will be making that change!
You got it!
The new owner haymaker hook is an EWG with a good hook bite that corrects this issue
Nice!
I do agree what you said with their fish hooks cuz I tried it myself and you are right what you were you were saying
Thanks!
Oh Matt I’ve been doing that for about 15 years now I was at a BFL tournament and was talking to Larry Nixon he was the one that told me to try it it makes a big deference in my hookups 👍
awesome!
This was taught back in the days of the old BASS traveling schools' years back! I think it was in the early 90's or late 80's. Great video refreshment for me. Thanks!
thanks!
Good tip, I’ve been doing that with a Spinnerbait for 45 years. Took it for granted that’s what you do.
awesome!
That tackle shop you’re filming at is loaded, if you’re having to put tackles in a 5 gallon bucket, I’m jealous 😅
haha
I don’t know why, but all of a sudden I totally see this, and it makes sense in a huge way😮
thanks!
Once again Matt another great tip. Thanks for the video I'll be doing this soon as the ice goes off the water
thanks!
Went fishing today. 8-inch Kingtail purple worm paid off again. Brand new hooks, but still missed a few bites. Wished this video had posted 6 hours earlier, but now I know. Thanks
Nice!
Thanks for the tip Matt, I will definitely give it a try especially with my swim jigs
You bet
I got the similar advice from Roland Martin and using frogs. My hookup ratio was low until opening up and out a bit , on my hooks on my frogs. Massive improvement❤❤❤❤
Nice!
Love this , great hook up !!!
Thanks!!
Seems like these small changes can make a big difference. Going to get my pliers right now! Really appreciate the tips! In about a year, I'll be able to take my grandson fishing and I want to make sure I can find and hook some fish with him. So, thanks again!
give it a try!
Hay. Thanks a lot. I forgot that !!!
You're welcome!
Thank you Matt
My pleasure!
Owner haymaker opens up the hook point straight from the package so it makes perfect sense for all your hooks. Thanks Matt!
yep!
Okay, really dig this simple one...
thanks!
I'll apply that to my jigs next time for sure
give it a try!
Actually tried that on a few hooks,I think it definitely helps keep fish hooked better. Nice tip 👌.
thanks!
Thanks for the tip, Matt. I love pitching jigs but there a lot of swing and misses. Your suggestion of bending the hook out slightly so that it no longer runs parallel to the fishes mouth makes sense to me and I will give it a try. Also, can you discuss how you handle the hookset in a video? Do you wait to feel the fish or go after the first bump? Is it better to jack 'em or just a quick pull and reel? Thanks for the info.
good video suggestion
When I made this change a while back, I noticed a big change in hookups with such a minor tweak! Another thing I do now is do a tiny bend to the side just a hair as well and seems to do good, but not much maybe like a 3 degree bend if that makes sense, kinda like what VMC does with their rugby style shakey head's
awesome!
Once again, thank you, very much. Awesome content.
thanks!
I think ur 100 percent correct , no doubts
awesome!
This changes everything and an amazing way to save money on hook's too for thoses type of application's.
yep!
Great tip! Totally agree!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great tip matt. I do this when I fish a tube and it makes a big difference on hookups!
Absolutely!
Good info...
Thanks
Excellent video. That's some juice. I was taught that yrs ago by an old pro as well. I always bend up my frog hooks a little too.
awesome!
I’m curious why the manufacturer doesn’t produce them like that: it could give them a competitive edge & perhaps better preserve the integrity of the hook. Also, your weed guard didn’t appear to be trimmed: do you wait until you tie it on?
yes that was just a bait out of the package ive never fished with for demo purposes
I like to trim the weedguard so that it's just about even with the point of the hook.
thanks for sharing
That makes sense Matt. I've noticed most of my jigs actually hook up better with the more fish you catch on them. Probably because after jacking a few fish and reeling them in it opens the hook up a bit on the jig?!
thanks
I Agree I’ve been doing it for years.
awesome
Excellent tip! Going to go bend some hooks right now.
Right on!
Matt, I appreciate the effort you are putting into this information and I’m sure it will come back to you with your own success this season. You certainly have more people wanting you to succeed 🍀🎣🍀 I can’t wait for the season to start 🍀🎣🍀👍
I appreciate that!
I do this with trebles as well. Have to use pliers but it makes a huge difference
yep
Good tip! Makes perfect sense. 🤷🏻
thanks!
Great help i appreciate the advice. Experience is the most important. Thank you
yep!
Must be nice to get some sunshine. I'm jealous!
It is!
Good tip!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for such simple straight forward advice!
you bet!
Ryugi infini comes with the point offset from the eye. EXCELLENT option for hooks that need zero bending. Until I found these hooks, I definitely practiced this!!
awesome
Bend that hook up 1/8 inch then trim that weed guard to about 1/8 to3/16 past the hook and always press the weed guard down to flair it out. You want miss fish.thank you for this channel we enjoy your content 🎣
thanks for sharing!
Yeah I’ve broke high tensel stout jig hooks if u go just tiny bit to much … I still have little success bending frog hooks out Snap
thanks for sharing
This tip is spot on! It's these "little" details, that can make a BIG difference! I know I have lost too many fish over the years and now I can blame the hooks and not myself 😂
thanks!
Haha! It's not you! Damn hooks!
Saw this tip on Bill Dance 30 years.ago it works.Your probably in shorts and flip flops at Okeechobee good luck Matt.👍👍👍👍👍
thanks
Hey Matt, Thanks for that excellent tip!! I've been hearing & seeing that a lot lately. To me that means I better try it!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
thanks for watching
A friend of mine used to do that with cricket hooks for shellcracker and bluegill fishing.
sounds good!
Good tip! Just getting back in to bass fishing a bunch. Any money saving rips on rustproof tackle storage boxes? Which do you recommend? Answers would be greatly appreciated.
Tips not rips
i like the plano rustproof boxes
You must be on the way to Florida, good luck! Yes I do all the time. It makes a great difference.
been here for a few days already
Another thing I do differently than I used to, I don’t reel down and try to set the hook hard. I reel down and just reel as I pull the rod similar to setting the hook on crank bait and I seem to get more fish in the boat!
thanks for sharing
Great tip I like to offset the hook by about 1.5 degrees. Of course I pretty much customize almost everything about the jigs I purchase so Maybe I should just start making my own!?! What about Frog hooks should a person bend those out as well, Ive heard both ways? Got a good river smallie on the Football today as a matter of fact. 21.5 and 15in girth. Love those river smallies here in TN.
awesome!
You hear about that all the time with frogs, but not jigs. Would you demonstrate how you bend them?
i just bend them slightly orut with a needle nose pliers
Thanks Matt! Quick question - for for stronger/thicker hooks, will you use pliers? Or just flex it with your hands? Thanks!
pliers
Freaking awesome man! I've noticed I been losing some fish on a jig that I normally don't and I'm betting this is going to make the difference. Once again Matt hits a grand salamie. Ty sir.
give it a try!
Magic on Finesse bullets
thanks for watching!
That make sense.
Because if you run your finger down ( slowly people ) on the corner of a 2x4 that has splits but those splits are flush u may be ok . If this splits at outward your gonna get splintered up big time when you’re building that new deck. So for the wood shop wear gloves and keep those splits flushed. For the tackle shop, bend those hooks out .
good example
Interesting point
thanks for watching
Game changing tip!
give it a try!
If you had to pick a single color lens for sunglasses when fishing in the North East, what color would it be? I'm on a budget and don't want to purchase 3+ colors, knowing I'll be giving up something with each color.
silver sunrise mirror
Great tip, going to try this one 👍
Hope you enjoy
Thanks Matt!
You bet!
I agree and sometimes being crazy is a good thing. Great tips as always. Tell everybody I said Hey! and I miss being able to comment on their channel 😔
you bet!
that's a great tip thanks matt
you bet!
Thanks Matt. Good tip, it should give deeper penetration also. Jig fishing could cause a few more snags but I do see your point (pun intended).
Swim jigs would benefit from this, they will be hooking themselves.
agreed!
I am going to try this on an ewg, i was on the bank and lost a 6 on a craw that just hit and ran, when I set the hook he busted out of the water , threw the bait in front of me. The bait was still skin hooked and never even came apart. I blame some on not letting him run more and hook set too.
give it a try!
Another successful pro suggested flexing the hook just a bit left or right.
im not a fan of that
Good point 👍
Glad you think so!
The small adjustments Thanks Matt, What's good down their ?
thanks for watching!
Matt you are giving up the juice 👍
makes a big difference!
Good tip
Glad you liked it
thank you for the tip
you bet
Just look at the owner haymaker that came out this year! Has replaced every style of flipping hook in my boat
agreed
I swear, I can't count how many times we discuss about a topic and sure enough, you release a video on that topic! lol.
We're in the process of designing a finesse jig and we were discussing about pre-bending the hook up 3 degrees or leaving it stock. The question was, would fisherman see it as the following: 1. Either they understand what you described or 2. they say the hook is bent out of shape. lol.
What a weird comment
This is a tournament pro stuff. If your lures will be designed for the Common Angler id say dont bend it
@@ansonyt3966 What's weird about it?
@@ballzybaits4414 "I swear, I can't count how many times we discuss about a topic and sure enough, you release a video on that topic! lol" makes it sound like youre trying to say you gave him the idea for this video and that it happens all of the time after your conversations
@ansonyt3966 OH nope. Just saying every time we think about certain topics, he releases videos on that topic.
How often do you ice fish??? Nice beaver, dams in the background
a handful of times per year
Be careful not to bend the barb down when you are pulling it out.
agreed
Well ok, you've never let me down. I'm all in for the 2% bend out. Will let ya know the results.
good luck!
I you bend em out and left or right a degree,,,,,,,,,,,,,they’re even sticker 😳😁😎
thanks for sharing
Huh, all the BS we’ve been told about hooks, man I’ve missed so many good bites over the years, awesome tip thanks Matt your the real deal bro!
Glad to help!
Do you do this on crankbaits?
i will sometimes
I did that with frogs.
yep!
Are you bending the hook at the shank or the curved part?
curved part
@@MattStefanFishing Thanks!
