Luna, a wild orca, plays with his human friend

  • Is it possible for a human to be friends with a wild whale? This little lost orca nicknamed Luna, who lived for a while on the coast of Vancouver Island, seemed to think so. Luna was part of a highly social group of orcas called the Southern Residents, but when he lost track of his family, he tried to make contact with people. www.savingluna.com

After watching the video, I decided to Google Luna to see how the Orca was doing. To my dismay, Luna was accidently killed back in 2006 by a tugboat. Apparently, Luna approached the tugboat and crew on it. Luna knew the tugboat and crew on it, since Luna and the crew would interact with one another. Unfortunately, when Luna got close to the tugboat, the tugboat's propellers with blades measuring 6 FT was extremely powerful and the suction of those propellers pulled Luna into it and Luna was killed. RIP Luna. My heart goes out to you.

Luna was from the L pod, but for reasons unknown, he got separated from his family (Southern Residents stay with their mothers their entire lives). There's a great documentary about him called The Whale ((2011).

Interestingly enough there isn't a single registered case of wild orcas killing a human and very few episodes of them attacking/inflicting minor injuries in general.
For some bizarre reason despise being smart, fierce and relentless predators in nature, they seem to be naturally comfortable/curious around humans even when they meet them for the first time. They don't perceive us as palatable food, even if arguments could be made that we shouldn't look that different from a seal from their perspective.
I have to say I find this instinctive affinity most cetaceans seem to have with us fascinating, because I have a hard time explaining it rationally.

They need to find a wide open lake or something and build an exhibition on it for retired whales to be fed and be able to swim. Like a man made lake could be drained cleaned and blocked off with a small feeding station built intonit.

Its interacting with people that got this orca killed. It got separated from its pod and loneliness made it seek companionship with people. The only thing it loved more than hanging out with humans was interacting with dogs. There's a few videos of it playing with dogs. You can see the orca was well within striking distance of the dog but it just bobbed up and down as the 2 became fast friends. Things turned for the worse when it made friends with some people on a tug boat. It was killed when it got pulled into the vessel's props. I believe the Canadian government implemented laws to prohibit human and whale interaction after this tragedy.

I've always loved Orcas. I've touched a few in the wild. Sad that some people think that they're vicious killers just because of their name. Orcas are very very smart. They'll be able to know you're not prey or predator. As long as u don't mean no harm you'll be okay. Trust me when I say this. It is a true honor and an amazing feeling swimming with them. Also this is where Orcas belong, out in the wild not in captivity.

For those of you who don't know, Luna was near the coast of Vancouver Island because he got separated from his mother at a young age and eventually started to interact with humans who lived there, rescue attempts were made to reunite him with his old family, but they evidently failed, as Luna died at the young age of six in Mooyah Bay after he approached an idling tugboat and got sucked into the propeller.
A rather sad, but inevitable end for this lonesome orca, if you look at his face in this video you can see a few scars on his face from previous accidents involving boats, it seems the possibility of interaction outweighed the risk to him
I've never met him myself as I've never even been to the area he lived in, but he is a rather famous orca for his story and friendly nature, if I recall correctly there is even a monument to him at Nootka Sound.

I honestly think Orcas are intelligent and capable of passing on memories through a language of sorts. I believe that they don't attack humans because they have been told not to by their elders in the pod. They remember when humans used to routinely attack and kill other whales. They might even have their own oral traditional tales of sorts. Chapter 1 Don't fuck with humans eat seals and salmon.

You're exactly right. They pass down generational knowledge and have their own cultures for each pod. It's a big reason why captivity didn't work for them. Imagine if you were put in a cage with a random man from the other side of the world and a higher being started making you perform tricks for food, you wouldn't be too happy either.

When I was young I think I believed that their eye was somewhere IN the white spot, but they kept their lids closed all the time, because they were so good at hunting, they didn't need to see.

This is a very sad story indeed, the stupid animal rights people made it illegal for people to
to make contact with Luna after word got around about how friendly and social he was.
Luna was very lonely with out his family so he would interact with people. The animal rights
group decided that it was a bad thing for people to play with him and keep him company.
Then one day Luna was chasing a big boat and was killed by the propellers.

Animal rights activists are the most uneducated when it comes to wildlife and the behaviour of species. Fuck them and their self conceived moral high ground.

You've got it wrong. Animal rights people were trying to save lunas life by making it illegal to play with him. He was in a shipping lane and getting too close to the boat props (propellers). Long history of sea creatures becoming too friendly and being wounded and killed by boats. They were hoping by making it illegal he would get bored and move on and that would save his life. He kept trying to play with people till he got killed by accident just like everybody was afraid of.

I'm from Vancouver Island B.C and I've seen many killer whales. One magickal moment was when I was on a boating trip with my class. I remember the water was like glass that day. So calm and beautiful out on the open sea.
An Orca approached our boat and was circling us for a while. The other kids were afraid but I started talking to her and put my hands in the water to beckon her over to me. To my amazement she came and let me pet her and give her belly scratches.
The other kids seeing our interactment became intrigued and all joined me to pet her. She would then swim under the boat, come up on the other side with a glorious jump splashing us all and sounding as if she was giggling. I think she wanted to show us her playful tricks.
Our teacher watched in awe but didn't dare come close. Eventually we had to go and I felt sad because I wish I could of gotten in the water with her. As silly as it sounds I wanted to go with her. I truly felt like her and I bonded in such a way no one else would understand and it pained me to leave her.
I kissed her and said my thanks. We then left and she spoke as if to say "goodbye please come again sometime". I'll never forget that day.
