      Well i actually have a problem with the 6.8 western name itself..... since 6.8 is the depth of the rifling....... But u see, the actual bullet, is a 7mm diameter bullet ... so why not just call it a 7mm western instead..?

      @@hhds4716 that’s because the 6.8 case is the same diameter as a 7mm mag. It’s actually a modified 270wsm case . Making it essentially a 6.8 short magnum.

    Short action seems to rule the day. That 6.8 with 175s is approaching, or matching, 7mm Rem mag performance with similar weight bullets. If the .270 Win had similar twist barrel it could bring those high BC bullets into play at slightly less speed and give it some new life.
    All your collecting has given me the "fever" to add new guns, even if I don't add new cartridges.

    • @frankiejones4816
      @frankiejones4816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all comes down to twist rate. Doesn't it. Like if the all the calibers have all the same twist rate. Example the twist rate for the 7mm'er have 1 n 9 or even 1 n 8 or even the 270 the 257 or the, 30 calibers. I things would have different. Short action or long action would have no meaning in bullet coefficient. Right think about.

    • @williamgaines9784
      @williamgaines9784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@frankiejones4816 Newer powders, newer bullets, and faster twist rates have contributed to many new cartridges. Making a different cartridge altogether allows the innvations to get upside without the downsides. Shooting a 175 gr in .270 Win would be similar to shooting 195 in .30-06, the lower speeds would not gain all the advantages of the higher BC bullets, AND the bullets would need to fit in all of the extant chambers, and maintain the pressure limits of them as well. New and improved does NOT negate the value of the original.

  • @DragerPilot

    The look of the cartridge reminds me of the 6.5 Remington Mag. It had the power of a 30:06; but better yet, had a muzzle velocity of over 3200 ft/sec. The rifle was a Remington carbine model 660. I loved the rifle and the cannon like cartridge. I never understood why it did not catch on, and was eventually phased completely out. For those reasons the 6.8 interests me. Thanks for your channel.

      The real difference from the previous 270 magnums is it being designed around heavier bullets for the caliber. Proper twist rate to launch heavy bullets that perform better at long range. Pretty much bringing the same goals that most of the recent 6.5 cartridges have to a larger caliber.

    • @frankiejones4816
      @frankiejones4816 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's identical to 270 wsm
      The twist on the 270 wsm is 1 n 10
      The twist on the 6.8 western is 1 n 8
      Which make shooting the heavy bullets good. If you have a 270 wsm with the same twist. Well. everything well be identical. Don't believe me put the two cartridge next to each other.
      Srill don't believe what you see.
      Find someone that has a 270 wsm and compare the two. After that you form your own opinion.
      Put it this if you ever burn out your 270wsm Rebarrel l your wsm with the same caliber with a 1 n 8 and you won't fine any difference between the two.

    • @frankiejones4816

    • @PNWredneck
      @PNWredneck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Frankie Jones, PSA, do not chamber 6.8 western cartridge in a rifle chambered in 270 wsm! You’re basically on the right train of thought, Winchester and browning took the 270wsm case, bumped the shoulder back, and gave it a faster twist barrel. They are extremely similar, but not interchangeable. Firing 6.8 western in a 270wsm chamber will result in excessive headspace, which is potentially damaging to both the rifle and the shooter. Fortunately because Winchester bumped the shoulder back, 270 wsm will not chamber in a 6.8 western rifle.

    • @frankiejones4816
      @frankiejones4816 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Got misunderstood. Thanks for the information. Yes I know it won't chamber. So don't try to chamber a 6.8 in a 270 wsm.(this is a part I did not or got to mention in my comment)
      Ballistic is going to be the same (was my intention to get across in my comment) also (the 270 wsm and the 6.8 western one won't have an edge over the other) was my intention. Thanks for your comment

    The first shot was with a cold bore. The chances are, most hunting shots will be taken with a cold bore. The barrel expands when it heats up, and some barrels wander slightly, then find their sweet spot when they're at temperature. I would check your cold-bore shot a few more times before calling that "good", if you're gonna be using that for a long-range hunting rig.
    Just my thoughts.

    I'm sold on this round! Reading up on it, the 165-grain Nosler ABLR round that Winchester loads will deliver more energy at 500 yds than a 180-grain .300 WM. In a nutshell, they took a .270 WSM case, shortened it slightly, and put longer heavier bullets in it to make the 6.8 Western cartridge. To stabilize those bullets they gave the Winchester rifles a 1-in-8" twist, and the Browning rifles got a 1-in-7.5" twist.
    Next bolt gun I get will be a Browning X-bolt Max Long Range chambered in 6.8 Western. Best of luck ringing that 1-mile doorbell!

    We can't rush to judgment shooting one load through one rifle. Barrel twist, barrel length, load development, chamber cut will all make a difference. With any load, testing and troubleshooting will come into play. They all need to be dialed in. Many new rifle cartridges died because these other elements weren't right and ppl rushed to judgment.

    Hey who tee who! I think it’d be a neat idea to make a video of you doing your routine like getting all your bing bangs, all the targets, the lead sled, just make a video of you getting everything set up! I wanna see how you do it! Just an idea, keep making great videos!

      2900ish FPS doesn’t exactly scream barrel eater, saami pressure is 65k psi, same as most modern magnums. No more so than standard 270 win in either catergory, just doing it with a heavier bullet.

      6.8 Western should not eat barrels any worse than 7mm Rem Mag or similar cartridges. Keep the barrel clean, and don't shoot it to the point it's too hot to touch. For the average hunter, it will last a lifetime or longer. If you are shooting PRC matches, expect a shorter lifespan.

    Who Tee..its a good video. 6.8 Weztern is a pretty nice round. However I will stick with my Browning White Gold Medallion 7mm Rem Mag or my Bergara 6.5 PRC.
    I'd still would like to have 6.8Western

      How do you like the 6.8 compared to your 300 WSM? I have a 300 WSM but want to get a 6.8 Western. I live in Montana and will be hunting Mule deer and Elk.

    • @WHOTEEWHO
      @WHOTEEWHO  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't compared bullet drop between those two, but I'd say you'd probably be fine with just the 300
