This reminds me so much of Flowers for Algernon. Some (maybe most) say that pre-surgery Charlie was much happier than post-surgery Charlie because pre-surgery Charlie didn't have to deal with the turmoil, the internal struggles and the total isolation he felt. Others may view pre-surgery Charlie as less fortunate simply because of our own standards and perceptions on what it means to be happy. Post-surgery Charlie was absolutely miserable because though he was just as lonely as he was in the beginning, now he could recognize and feel that loneliness. More than that, post-decline Charlie was more miserable than pre-surgery Charlie but still happier than post-surgery Charlie.
This man here intentionally decides to lower his IQ because he becomes so tired of feeling what post-surgery Charlie felt for all his life. He intentionally tries to become a "pre-surgery Charlie" to gain his ignorance.
A true genius would develop ways to explain his ideas to her. One truly has mastered their field when they can explain it to their grandmother.
Unless he also has ADHD.
She also needs to try to develop some understanding of his field. I have fairly average intelligence. However most of us learned atoms are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons (subatomic particles). This is basic high school science.
What is not high school science is to look beyond these components. While electrons are elementary particles, protons and neutrons are not. These are composed of more elementary particles called hadrons which are composed of elementary particles called quarks. I can get that, but I lose it completely when I try to understand the character of quarks.
There are books out there that explain Einstein’s theories and quantum mechanics in layman’s terms. Basic rule - if you love someone try to learn a little about their interests.
If she said ‘do you mean the energy output of electrons and quarks?’, it could have gone a long way to making him feel less isolated. She doesn’t need to understand how it worked exactly, but asking him a few intelligent questions would show an interest.
Hopefully he should get she would not grasp quantum mechanics fully (who does?), but at least he could then explain some of what he was doing in more simple terms.
Most of us are not dumb, but we are not taught to be interested in complex science ideas.
If they both tried, they might be surprised with each other.

I relate so much to the statement “the only time I was miserable was when my brain was on low” I take a sedative very morning when I wake up (the same one that is one of the only meds that helps with my insomnia) because my anxiety gets rly bad when my Brain is trying to function at full capacity

in opposite, ppl with high or higher IQ are able to adopt to other people very very good. and they dont need that high intelligent counterpart as a partner. In opposite, its much more fun and relaxing if you have a normal person around you with normal stories and lifetopics.
You do know people have different experiences and emotions right? Not everyone falls into one category or the other
