    This book is amazing. I read the entire book with the aid of a flashlight for four days thanks to Hurricane Hermine. Toobin leaves nothing to chance. I remember the evening Patty Hearst was kidnapped as I heard it on the CBS Evening news. I was only a few years older then Patty Hearst so I was intrigued from the start. All these years later I'm still fascinated by the whole event and the way it unfolded. Toobin has does an excellent job of answering many of the questions that have remained all these years later. It appears as if the crowd to whom he was speaking have not read the book as they seemed to laugh at inappropriate times. That being said, g
    reat job Jeffrey!!

    I've been bothered for years by the lack of focus on the Marcus Foster murder. It's always treated as a footnote. Not only was it a tragedy for Dr. Foster's family, it was a tragedy for the Oakland school system. If Dr. Foster had lived, he might have made meaningful improvements to public education in Oakland. As it was, the Oakland schools continued to lurch from one crisis to the next.

      Marcus Foster was a very respected educator who DID make meaningful contributions to the school system. He was a liberal and worked against racism all his life. His assassination was bizarre. He was never "an enemy of the people."

    "Was Patty Hearst a brainwashed victim or a willing participant in the crimes of the SLA?"
    Yes.

    Good book. One thing I learned was that in Guyana they drank Flavor Aid, not Kool Aid. I'm surprised Toobin made that mistake.

    I don’t know if anybody who is reading this has been a victim of kidnapping but I have. It is a terrifying experience. I bolted from my kidnappers and despite their guns, I lived. So I was not in a closet for 10 weeks. I don’t think people realize just how fragile the mind is. It is easy to judge Patricia Hearst without experiencing what she went through. There is not one word from her. She wrote about Toobin threatening her if she didn’t cooperate in being interviewed. Instead he goes by the word of a kidnapper and one of her captors for information. Tired book with little information other than his theories.

      He’ll slap it down on the table at a business meeting soon. He pulled it out at the virtual meeting, he’ll pull it out at the in-person meeting.

    I never knew Cinque escaped. All these years I'd wondered who the hell ever let him out of prison in the 70s - much like Manson in the 60s.

    • @PlumbNutz
      @PlumbNutz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He may have been allowed to escape because he simply walked away. He had been trained to operate some sort of steam boiler and he was doing this at night all alone with no guard. He simply walked out of the building and hopped a fence.

    I saw a documentary about Hearst on CNN and Toobin was spot on correct. It all made sense and I agree with him. He connected the dots along with tons of others who were there with Hearst at this time. It was a documentary mini series called The Radical Story of Patty Hearst (2018).

    Fascinating research and interpretation, but as a person actually from the Bay and having previously worked in San Quentin, Vacaville is pronounced, “vack-uh-vihl” not “vuhck-uh-vihl,” but thanks for atleast pronouncing Daly City correctly:)
