I never knew about Rakugo, but now am going to read more about it. Thank you! I find it amazing to bring this style of introducing Japanese culture and manners to the English speaking world…both sides can laugh at the absurdity AND understand the wisdom of it at the same moment. Bravo!
That part about the elderly in hospitals - someone in Croatia also told me that elderly like to come and chat with their family doctor at his/her office, just to not be lonely. One guy often came, and when he didn't come for a week or so, his friend got asked- and said the person in question actually got sick.
Hi Shogo, I just returned from the local Renaissance Faire in my full Ronin ensemble (Kasa hat to Waraji sandals and all). I ran into a Japanese guy there with his daughter dressed like a European swordsman and his little princess. We locked eyes, I thought he was gonna hit me, but I told him, "It's respect. The Samurai existed just as much as the Knights of Europe." He smiled back, he thanked me and gave me props for my commitment to historical authenticity with my ensemble.
In this video, Katsura Sunshine shared a short story about Japanese "Keigo" (polite language) towards the end. I am a Japanese person from Shogo's parents' generation, and I have used the phrase "goshido, gobentatsu no hodo, yoroshiku onegai itashiitashimasu" only once. Translated literally into English, it means "Please teach me and hit me with a whip!" I used this expression at my child's wedding when I thanked the guests on behalf of both families. These expressions are now used in very limited cases and are old expressions of courtesy. I think Shogo's generation may never use them. I probably won't use them in the future either.
It's very similar to stand-up comedy (just while sitting) Interesting how some things are universal and pop up across cultures. Just someone telling funny stories for an audience appeals to people the world over, in every time period. I can imagine, back in the Edo period, such storytellers travelling around the countryside and telling funny stories in village squares to raucous laughter. Probably earned them plenty of free sake and food.
I saw this guy for a short where he talked about lengthening the vowels in certain Japanese words. I laughed so hard from that, learned that he was Canadian and that was it, he shot up to being one of my favourite comedians and gained alot more of an appreciation for rakugo Love me some Katsura Sunshine
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a must watch. A very mature (seinen) take on rakugo that got an animation adaptation in 2016. It’s lowkey a masterpiece
Rakugo is so cool. I once took a world theatres class in university and presented on rakugo because I found it so interesting. (But it was actually because I had watched a tragic BL anime about it).
I like rakugo stories, my wife got me into "Tiger and Dragon," which was about rakugo performers and every episode was built around a different traditional rakugo story. It's on netflix and has English subtitles.
I fell in love with Rakugo when I watched Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, it's such a cool way to tell stories! I wish more people knew about it. I had to teach my boyfriend that the Jugemu Jugemu routine comes from Rakugo and not the popular anime meme 🤣
As an indigenous person I can tell you that the land ”Canada” as it is called today is thousands of years old. It was many Nations before settlers and colonizers arrived. And even had advanced civilizations.
Agree on most part. But Ancient civilizations are a stretch. We don't have proof of it. Edit- Guys with ancient civilizations I stupidly inferred you meant Civilizations created by so called Ancient Aliens 👽. 😬 No one denies presence of Indigenous tribes in South and North America. 🙏
@@learndesignwithdev you don't believe in Aztec? Maybe there's a border fro USA, Mexico and Canada, but to us indigenous it's all a part of turtle Island. And before settlers came we traded with all nations on turtle Island.
Well, Canada as we know today was born recently, and before that there were French and English colonies came in, and before that there are many tribes of Indigenous people that live there for thousands of years, every tribe has their own culture. Just like how Italy and Germany were officially created recently, but there were several regions that spoke German and Italian before that.
Reading Akane Banashi, i would think Rakugo would have this fairly strict story telling structure but Katsura Sunshine's Rakugo is pretty similar to stand up comedy.
One thing I really hope Shogo takes up some more in the future is.. Roadside Taverns both old and modern. What was the staple of dishes offerered was it mostly rice bowls? And if especially isolated version. Where did it get food ingridenses? From wandering merchants. Or if fish or other meaty cuisine did the shop owner go to markets or hunted himself?
Neil Gaiman wrote a character in a story observing that, in the UK, a hundred miles is a long way, while in the US, a hundred years is a long time. The character in question was a Brit in Los Angeles, musing on how a tour guide boasts of a house there being a hundred years old, while in England you can find pubs that have been operating in the same building since like 1344 or something and a house that's a hundred years old is like 80% of the homes outside of London (London has fewer because it kept burning down).
I feel like this is something you must have answered before, but just in case: Have you seen the TV Series "The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House". Do you guys have any comments on the accuracy of the show, or how it depicts the lives of the characters, given that's it's based on a modern depiction of traditional Japanese culture?
Riotous! Thanks for sharing hilarious content 😎☕💋 PS He's from Toronto! - my home town. Torontonians love comedy & we love to shorten every word & phase possible too.
Have you ever seen the TV show Highlander? He uses a katana and almost every episode has a swordfight. Would you be interested in making a video about the accuracy of them? If so, i would love to watch it,I used to be a huge Highlander fan.
i have watch katsura sunshine here in UK at hyper japan festival. due to having learning difficulties (学習障害), i wasn't sure to laugh but i did in the end. it take me a while to process my thought. it is also why it take me longer to learn japanese, as i have been studying for 4 years.
The manga series Akane-banashi introduced me to rakugo, and now watching rakugo videos on TH-cam (whether it be Katsura Sunshine or subtitled Japanese videos) has become my go to destresser.
hello, I'm from Ukraine, I came across your channel by accident, but I was very interested in what you are telling me, I would like to come to your country one day, thank you for your interesting content
I've never seen a video of you reacting to Ghost of Tsushima; could you react to the way Jin draws his sword and sheathe his sword and is it really possible to use a Katana like he did!
Hey, I have an unrelated question. I have been looking at Tenugi. Japanese hand towels. They are often used for Kendo. Is there any reason you can never find one with Japanese flag or the old Imperial Rising Sun flag? Is it taboo to wear something like this? Just wondering.
Thank you for this insightful and fun video about katsura and also the other video about rakugo. I'm myself a storyteller on stages in my home country for many years now. By research i stumbled opon the rakugo tradition some time ago and love love the wonderful deep and fun stories of all the various rakugokas who tell them in English or with subtitles here on yt. They're an endless inspiration source for me for my own stot telling. And Katsura is such a brilliant Storyteller and Ambassador of the Japanese culture, as you are too!!! Arigato!

There is a TH-cam channel called "English Rakugo" where a Rakugo-ka tells some traditional Rakugo stories translated into English. There are only four videos, but they are all worth watching!

Right?
it is *always* the Edo period 😊

these new intros look absolutely awesome, love to see how you've grown as a content creator over the years shogo-sama
Since the manga "Akane-banashi" started, I need more rakugo in my life.
There are several animes which include rakugo, though I only remember "My master has no tail" out of my head.
