    A comparison of the dialogue from Portal 2 in English, German, Spanish, French, and Russian. I was digging through the game files and listening to the differences, when it occurred to me that other people might be interested in this as well, so I compiled a few of them into this video.
    These clips are pulled directly from the game files, so the difference in volume was unavoidable; sorry about that. Also sorry about my shit video editing skills.
    A lot of people have been mentioning their faves in the comments. I tend to like the English voices best, but that's likely because they're what I'm most used to. I have to say though, all of the GLaDOSes are fantastic.

    This video is poorly made in retrospect, but I'm glad people like it anyways. Sorry for the mistakes/misunderstandings in my text-commentary; if TH-cam still had annotations I would use them to fix it but... alas. I would like to make more translation comparisons, as it's a personal hobby of mine, but it's proven to be very difficult for most things I like, considering I can't just sort through extracted sound files like I can with Valve games. I would have to record and edit hours of video footage, and for anything that isn't a video game I would risk a lot of copyright striking that I don't really want to deal with.
    Not to mention my language skills have improved quite a bit. I may perhaps do more translation *analysis* videos rather than direct comparisons such as this one, where I pick different media and discuss specific interesting variations. I wrote the beginnings of a script a few months ago talking about problems with the anime dubbing industry. Would anyone be interested in these? Let me know!

    In spanish, they translated "When the life give you lemons, make lemonade" to "Al mal tiempo, buena cara", that means "To bad times, good face", so the metaphor changes completely.
    So it actually says something like "I will make the weather regret giving Cave Johnson a bad time, I'll burn the damn weather predictions "

      That explains it then! I tried comparing it to other eastern European accents, but none of them quite matched up. It sounds like he's just overemphasizing the pronunciation.

    • @L4evsk
      @L4evsk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well in Ru Wheatley doesn't mention any accent, he literally says: "I'm speaking like this, because...", and I think this actually makes a real joke. Because, people may speak with an accent, if their pronunciation is not good enough, and that's OK, and the translators could easily use one of recognizable local dialects, but instead, Ru-Wheatley just distorts his intonation and pronunciation, and that's what people do if they play fool...or, in Wheatley's case, a moron ;)

  • @thaizzz

    I really like the delivery of the numbers of the narrator in English. Ir sounds like his enjoying it.
    They also changed the punchline of the "cinetic momentum" line for the spanish version. Instead of being "God'll help you" it's changed to something more like "We recommend you start praying" the spanish narrator sounds more impersonal in that sense.
    I didn't even feel the transition between English's GlaDOS and German's

    When cave johnson says in French "je vais lui péter les rotules", it's not an expression about farting, péter is also a familiar way to say break or destroy. He actually says that he's going to break life's rotula so it won't get up. Anyway this video is nice regardless of the few mistakes.

    Coucou in French is very funny since Russians use "ку-ку " very often
    German Space Core is the best, I like it!
    Adventure Core switched on "Славься" by Glinka, sadly, it actually suggested to play heroic by not adventure music. Not sure about first part of that music though, but the second part is totally it!

    Thank you for sharing this!
    I've watched the game's walkthroughs in English and in Russian instead of playing myself; now maybe it's the duck syndrome but I liked the English version better, definitely. The Russian voice of GLaDOS was even irritating at times. And, I may be mistaken, but some jokes are lost in translation, that one about a potato in particular. At least, in Russian, there is nothing wrong with a potato.
    Maybe they translated "Aperture Science" in Ru as "Portal Research Lab" because the direct translation would sound quite funny and, perhaps, a bit suggestive, at the same time the original "Aperture Science" might just not sound too nice for a native Russian, or so they might think (it did come to my mind).
    (I think they also did translate the "Black Mesa" in HL-s in Ru...I'm not sure.)
    Cave Johnson - I liked the English version here best. Maybe it's just me, but it portrays his character best: agressive, business-minded, sometimes obsessive, heartless, evil. In German, it seems to me, he sounds not evil enough, in Spanish - too cheerful, in French - more like a grumpy old man, and in Russian - too kind and polite.
    For Wheatley, I liked English (of course) and then Russian versions best. Its (his?) German voice is good, but maybe too serious for this character.
    It was also fun for me to hear (vaguely, though, from a friend's PC speakers) some differencies in how GLaDOS refers characters in coop-game of Portal 2. So, she referred to the players' robots as "it" (both of them) in En, but as "he" in Ru. At the same time, GLaDOS referred to a disassembling machine as "he" in En (couldn't hear the Ru version unfortunately), thus meaning more personality in that machine than in player controlled test robots, which is fun too.

    • @criminalbird9138
      @criminalbird9138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sorry for my bad English.
      "So, she referred to the players' robots as "it" (both of them) in En, but as "he" in Ru." - that's because we have grammatical gender in Russian. Word "robot" (робот) has masculine gender - "he" (он).
      In "Detroit: Become Human" Russian localisation ran into a problem. In a nutshell, game's word - is a future world. There are robots serving people - they called androids. People and androids talk about androids using word "it" because androids are things for them, not persons. But people and androids who see persons in androids talk about and them using word "he/she". Android (андроид) in Russian has masculine gender. How we supposed to express the difference between soulless "it" and "he/she"? Just using words like machine, android! For example, in English repairman talk about android Kara using "it": "it was really messed up". In Russian he talks using word "machine": "Машина была просто в хлам" (The machine was completely destroyed).
      About Russian GLaDOS: I have to admit that she (it?) sounds different but I like Russian voice of her. And I'm definitely in love with Russian Wheatley. Voice actor's name is Konstantin Karasik (Константин Карасик). He also was a voice actor for Vaas in "Far Cry 3". And he did great there too.

    So I played the game in German and English and it's cool too hear a language comparison. Here are my thoughts. Russian GLaDOS sounds a bit too mechanical in comparison to other languages. I think the English Cave Johnson is best, but French sounds good too. I mean, nothing can beat Stephen Merchant for Wheatley, but most of the other languages sound similarly "silly" in tone. But I think Spanish doesn't really fit. German space core is bad. Where is the autotune?! Sadly, the word "Weltraum" is hard to say or even scream because it's made of 2 words (literally "World Room") and not as short as "SPACE!!!" and there are no alternatives.The other languages sounds great. Rick sounds nice in all versions expect Russian, as you mentioned. Too monotone. Spanish fact core misses the autotune? The German one really has a "know it all" voice. It's great. Is Russian speed up?
