Ironhead 4 speeds trannys are no more trouble than any other vintage piece of machinery. Put together correctly by the book you can get many years of reliable service. I mean "by the book". That means get a Harley factory manual for your model and follow the instructions. No guessing allowed.
I remember going through that with my 76. Took a lot of tries and some choice words. I think I had a spare 82 transmision that i swapped gears and got it to shift to 3 and 4.Double check your gears and make sure they are all in good shape. From what I hear , Ironhead Transmissions are trouble. Good luck.
@edZILLA64 Thanks bro. It's getting better filing on the countershaft and hosing it down with lube. I just don't want to get it all back together and riding for it to start giving me fits later on.
