  • This video shows you how I desensitize my yearling horse - this is the best way to DeSpook your horse. Grayson has not had this done before and after a member of my academy asked about how to work with her "whip-shy" horse I thought I would show how I do it. Desensitization is part of your horse training as it helps your horse to learn how to control himself when he becomes worried about something. Desensitization of the horse should be done by reading the horse. It is NOT just putting pressure on the horse with complete disregard to how he feels and having him become "shout down and/or anxious. That is called flooding and has no place in horse training or in any form of groundwork in this day and age.

Learning how to desensitize your horse is an important part of your horsemanship skills. Desensitization is NOT flooding as the horse has a "say" when you do it correctly.

We are told in the US that if the male horse shows his penis, that we are to gentlely pop it with our whip or our hand to cause the male to retract his penis, due to the horse learning not to let it extend. It is something looked down upon in showing horses here, I have been told. Is this a correct action to correct the horse, or should it be allowed during training. Thank you.

All that means is that he’s relaxed. Sounds dumb to me to have to discourage calmness. But that’s just my opinion

    It's not a whip, it's a hearing aid.
