MY UNCLE WORKED in the Uranium Mines in Grants in the 60's-70's. He gave me several large Uranium Rocks and a very large Dinosaur Fossil he brought up. He told me they would not report fossils because they would want to put digging on hold. He died of cancer in the late 80's (of course)
My daddy and three uncles all worked in a uranium mill in Grants in the 1950's. They all died of lung cancer. I was just a toddler but I remember what a rough place it was.
Nice accounting of a period of Grants history. I've actually had a discussion with some locals about the mines and mining in the area. It just splits down the middle of those who discount the entire environmental case and believe cash will cleanse all, and the environmentalists who believe the social and opportunity costs related to mining are too much to justify the activities. Also splits along political lines, as you'd expect. In the long run the latter group has proven correct.
