  • I am hopping to decoy hooded crows into range of my FAC air rifle to try and control their numbers as the farmer contacted me asking for help with a hooded crow problem as one of his lambs had been killed by crows.
    This is all done on farm land that i have permission to do so on with legally held air rifles and is done in a legal and humane manner as not to prolong or glorify the death of the birds.
    This can legally be done through the Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 (As Amended) Licence.
    This Licence hereby authorises for the purpose of preventing the spread of disease and preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber and fisheries ANY AUTHORISED PERSON to kill or take any of the following birds:-
    Crow, Gull (Greater Black-backed), Gull (Herring), Gull (Lesser Black-backed), Jackdaw, Magpie, Pigeon (Wood), Pigeon (Feral), Rook, Sparrow (House), Starling.
    Rifle FX Crown .22cal 30+ft/lb
    Scope Bushnell Tactical Elite 2.5-16x42
    Pellets .22cal JSB Hades
    Bushnell Scout 1000 Rangefinder

    Need a heavier pellet or a flat headed pellet to transfer some of that energy into the bird. The pellets are just travelling straight through the bird with minimal damage/energy transfer.

      I was using the .22cal Hades pellets which are supposed to transfer their energy very well but maybe i was pushing them too hard at 960fps but no matter I've managed to get my hands on some slugs to see how well they do.

    Good afternoon, I'd just like to say, that I enjoy watching your videos, and have learnt a lot, today is a combination of 18 months planning, so today I'm out decoying pigeons on freshly sown barley and peas, like you suggested I've put the decoy pattern out in a horse shoe, around a stick at my zero range, and most of the pigeons I've shot today, have landed by that stick, so thank you for the advice, and keep up the good work 😁

  • @leftymadrid

    That was very interesting. I mean, your shots were right on! And to see those birds try and leave the area was strange. I'm thinking that the pass through of the pellets just didn't hit any vitals. You would like that at that speed the pellet would have opened up? Very strange indeed. I'm shooting FAC as well, but found that a 1.77 10.34 JSB pellet at 14.35 fpe at 60-85 yards knocks the quarry straight down in 90% of the cases. And when I had it tuned for more power it was seemed like my shots were off because of how the quarry would act after the shot. After careful inspection I had seen that the shot was spot on, and with a total pass through...
    It boggles the mind right?
    I'm sure if you were bunny hunting your headshots of course would have rolled them over no problem. That's a given. NOW if you shot a rabbit with a head shot and you saw it simply walk off like nothing, I'd get my hunting gear quickly and leave for the house as quickly as possible!! As that would be a sign of the zombie apocalypse lol
    Excellent hunt there, thx for sharing :-)

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your right about the pass through's but you'd think the faster their going the more they would open up a bit like a ballistic tip bullet, maybe turning the speed down to under 900fps would have been better, but anyway i've managed to get my hands on some slugs so we'l see how they do next.

  • @SB-wh6gy
    @SB-wh6gy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I also am amazed that the Hades at that speed did not stop them almost on the spot.
    My .25 Crown with Hades seemed to stop them better. Also the Fx hybrid slugs were a step up again, they are worth the money I think. I have a Maverick sniper in .22, I am going to use slugs mostly and pellets. If it won’t stop corvids any better than that I will be tempted to get a bigger cal barrel.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think i might have been pushing the Hades too fast and they were just punching through the birds without imparting much knock down power so i'm going to try slugs and if that doesn't work a .25cal.

    • @SB-wh6gy
      @SB-wh6gy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuntersVermin I am in the same boat, I went for a .22 fac. I am confident slugs will have the stopping power. If not I have .30 cal slot and may get that. I think that would have good results. Look forward to your next video with the slugs on crows.

    You answered a couple of my past comments, so I figured I there must be a new video from you 🙂
    Assuming Canadian Ravens are the same (our west coast ones are enormous) you can tell the difference because a raven's tail, when flying, is rounded at the tip, where a crows is flat. Also the beak of a crow in profile is flatter and thinner, where a raven has a more "roman" profile.
    Chest shots aren't instant unless you get the heart. Even so, a lung shot will kill them in a little while. Good enough for hunting, but I guess you need to have proof for the bounty. Hope you enjoyed your second breakfast! 😃

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks i've looked at a few ravens since your comment and your right they do have a rounded tip to their tail. There's no real bounty for crows and i don't get payed for what i do but i do get some nice permissions to shoot on through it.

    Great video once again. I am really enjoying your channel. IME on crows with air guns here in the states, they are amazingly tough critters compared to a lot of other small game animals. If your gun will shoot them well, try the H&N Barracuda Hunters (the non extreme version / the one with the round nose and HP). They expand much more readily than the Hades in any caliber and kill very fast, even on game as small as crows or even starlings etc

I have used the FX Hybrids and NSA slugs on them in my 25 and 30 and they get the job done and shoot flatter too. The Hybrids are all I used in my 30. They shoot extremely well on my tune and hit like a brick at longer ranges. The buck the wind so much better than pellets I seldom have to allow for wind under 125 yards with the 30. Your suffering from pass through David,I find the hades shoot better on a lower fps. The pellet is taking most of its energy with it on exit, still good video.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think your right though you'd think that the faster speeds would make them expand more like a ballistic tipped bullet.

    • @TheDaystate
      @TheDaystate 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuntersVermin in theory yes, but in my field tests the pellets at higher velocity weren't so effective. Although I'm shooting at 12ftlb and under, the hades in 22 retrieved from quarry showed that the heads had mushroomed rather than opened out from the head groves. Higher speeds increase the twist rate and in feathered quarry a clogging effective may be taking place and preventing the groves opening up. I have more field testing to find out whats happening. Instant body shot kills always showed that the pellet hadn't exited the body.

    yep i definitely think the velocity of those pellets is to fast and your suffering from pass through , did you change ammo or slow the velocity down ? im using hades in my .25 M3 tomorrow morning nice and early on the crows, farmer friend has been dung spreading so hopefully i will get a chance to get to grip of a few crows, keep the videos coming mate , i love reading the comments of the D@ckheads telling you that corvids dont need controlling..

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah there are a lot of people that seem to think its the wonderful world of Disney out there and animals all get along with each other with man being the big bad guy, I've seen what crows will do to a full grown sheep if it cant get to its feet and its not nice. I would agree it looks like the pellets are pencilling through though I've seen them fired into ballistic gel and the faster they're going the more they open up so you'd think they'd do more damage but a crow only being 2-3 inches deep might not give the pellet time to open up like it does in the gel block.

    At that speed the pellet just pass through without dumping any energy in the crows. Might be time to try out some slugs instead, then it'll be one shot, one kill all day.

      I think the problem was more that the JSB Hades were punching right through the birds without imparting much knock down power so maybe i was pushing them too fast.

    • @HuntersVermin

      Maybe with the couple of birds that got back up and ran but i would have thought that at 960fps the pellets would have punched right through their breast bone and it was more likely poor marksmanship from me.

    Aim for the head. I use .177 sub 12ftlb landing a well aimed headshot gets the job done. Great shooting tho, even chased wounded birds X'D legend. I would of gone for a follow up shot by getting out of the little tent chair set up too unfit.

    • @HuntersVermin
      @HuntersVermin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Years ago i used to take nothing but head shots even with the FAC rifles until viewers complained that i was taking too long to take the shot and i should have gone for a heart and lung shot as some birds would fly off before i managed to get a good head shot, so thats why i started taking more heart shots and to be fair i can get the shot off quicker and less birds fly off before i get the shot off but unlike head shots you do get the odd runner so i guess i'll just have to get a bit fitter.
