    101 is 20 bucks here. 25 for a liter. Over 100 i think you hit diminishing returns. For 150 it better be btac (specifically gts) level for me. There are a few exceptions based on personal preference (for example i have a soft spot for the way blood oaths drink so ill spend the money) but overall i think your best bottles are consistently 40-80.

    • @Lawler4040
      @Lawler4040 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agreed. $40-80 is the sweet spot.

    • @wiindigoat
      @wiindigoat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lawler4040 Agree, you can get amazing purchase at that price point, either from well established (for good reason) brands that can output without pricing up, or from smaller distillerys and some oddities/curiosities that won't go above the 80/100 price point for a really occasionnal experience. The only reason I would go above the 100/120 price point (and still try to keep it under the 200) is when it's something I'm really looking into, got a change to try, know I won't be disapointed even though let some space for surprises, and that have a bit of a rarity label to it (like I paid 120 for a Blackened CS barrel pick, never been my favorite, but considering a bottle where I live goes around 350 with delivery/import, it was a fair deal to have this nice gimmick on the shelf for that price. Would I pay that much if it was available ?, or just to reshelf a product that I love, probably not). I really feel that above 150 and beyond your paying for scarcity and the collectible (and way beyond that price point, more like second hand market investment), so I won't blame people for doing it, but if it's about ejoying what you drink there's never been a scenario where paying as much as a meal in a 3 star restaurant with your loved one, or a small car, or a cheap trip to a nearby but underrated place/country, is equaly as enjoyable as any drink).

    Definitely love this idea - please keep the series going. Lots of distilleries or distinct product lines to choose from, just pick one and keep going. I know you guys don’t love Beam, but a knob creek 9 vs 12 vs 15 or 18 would be cool. Old forester 100 vs whiskey row bib (1897) vs King Ranch or single barrel barrel proof, etc.

  • @MarcDennert
    @MarcDennert ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Love the idea of this series. I wish there was more included - it was quite the jump from Rare Bread to Single Rickhouse, and there are really interesting products in-between.

    • @Hellboy700
      @Hellboy700 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but they all hover around the $50 to $70 price range (not including Masters Keep). I think for clarity and brevity that the jump to Single Rickhouse is a perfect example of the price outpacing the product.

  • @josephterry6948
    @josephterry6948 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This is a great idea! I generally agree with your recommendations. And, having similar product lines compared by price plus the experience of drinking the bourbon to find the "diminishing returns" is brilliant! Thank you!

    I loved the value ranking idea. I often wonder if I'm missing out on high priced bourbons when I choose a high value tastes great bottle. Recently I've been passing on a lot of $70+ bottles because I'm tired of over paying for so-so whiskey. And it seems as though distilleries and new FOMO products are popping out of the woodwork every other week. Especially all the different finished products. Thanks for you constant and in-depth reviews, especially these value driven ones.

      I’m getting to that point as well. I’ve had quite a few lately that were 70$+ and were very good but not something I enjoyed any more than a Kentucky Spirit or Rare Breed. Last one I had that I really thought gave me it’s worth for high $ was Remus V for 150$.

    Doing four bottles would be interesting. Stepping up to a RR SiB or RR SiB pick would make the convo more interesting considering the Rare Breed. I feel like there is typically a lot of value in that 40-60 range that your middle bottle will always be close to if not your first choice. Throwing in a fourth bottle will make it interesting.

    Excellent review. I had a 101/Rare Breed drink-along. I agree the Rare Breed finishes much stronger and just hits with much more flavor, not too surprising. However, here in good ol' KY, I can get a 750 of 101 for $20. a 1.75 costs me about $40! But a Rare Breed costs me $56. I have to start thinking hard: is a Rare Breed worth more [almost] than a 750 then another 1.75 on top of it? The answer? Yes, but savor the RB a bit more when enjoyed. Cheers.🥃

    This is a good idea for videos. It might help people who are considering an expensive bottle but are wondering if it is worth the cost.
    I have been drinking booze for a long time, and I have tried a wide range from cheap to very expensive. My experience has taught me that there is a point of diminishing return and that sometimes a reasonably priced bottle of booze is better than an absurdly expensive one. (I tasted Screaming Eagle once and wasn't overly impressed. Sure, it was a good wine, but the hype around it mystifies me.) I rarely pay more than US$200 for a bottle of booze. It has been well over ten years since I paid that much for a bottle of wine, and in all my life, I have paid over $200 for a distilled spirit twice. I have had a decent amount of expensive booze over the years from going to fancy wine tastings and ordering shots of the high-end rotgut in bars. This makes more financial sense, as it allows me to satisfy my curiosity without wasting a small fortune. Also, I received a bottle of 1982 Château Mouton-Rothschild as a birthday gift. It is a wonderful wine, and I was happy to get the chance to drink it, but it sells for over $1000, so I'm not going to buy a bottle when there is a lot of wonderful wine out there that costs less than $100.
    At some point, the price of a bottle of booze reaches the point that it isn't worth it no matter how good it is. Ridiculously expensive booze tends to be more of an investment item (often a risky and bad investment) or a status symbol for people who are sitting on a lot of surplus money. None of this makes sense to me, as I see booze as something to be enjoyed, and nothing more. Fortunately, those of us who aren't filthy rich have plenty of options for reasonably priced, high quality booze. I'm sure we all have price barriers that cause us to think twice and absolute limits that we will not cross. For me, up to $100 is reasonable for a bottle of distilled spirit that I would have as an everyday booze. I'll go up to $200 on occasion for a special one that I really want. I will go above $200 very rarely, and I have never exceeded $400. For wine, the barrier for everyday bottles is $50, but the other numbers are roughly the same. Even if I cut these numbers in half, I would still find no shortage of good booze, though some categories (i.e. Scotch whisky, Cognac, and some types of dessert wine) would start to become a bit scarce.
    If wine and spirits seem expensive, there is always beer. Though beer isn't my favorite type of booze, I have found that it is by far the best value. At craft breweries and some bars in my area, well made and complex beers can be had for around $5 to $10 for a glass. It's amazing how much less an evening at the brewery costs compared to an evening at the wine bar or spirit-focused bar, often for an experience that is just as interesting.

    after being lucky enough to try the birthday bourbons, stagg seniors and such they are certainly superior whiskies but often not worth the price imo unless whiskey is your thing thing

      I’ve got A.H. Hirsch 16, Black Maple Hill 21, and Pappy 20. They’re all extraordinary and I’m glad I bought them…thirteen years ago. The last bottle of AHH I bought was in 2009. At $180/bottle, it was well worth the price.

    Love the video. Keep up these kinds of comparisons-so great. Maybe something missing in between the RB and the super rare super allocated super expensive SR would have been just a Russels SiB store pick because they are often more than the RB (60-80 range) and this might be more relatable to us poor folk who aren’t going to spend 300 on anything. Period. Love you guys.

    Ardbeg 5, Oogie, and something in the $200+ range if you have it.
