i am from Bay Area and went to Asheville for first time a few days ago as part of a cross country trip. I am trying to convince my wife to retire there in a few years. Her cousin lives in Arden and loves it.

Hi Lauren, we are from SF Bay Area as well. We are thinking about moving to Asheville as well. I just spent thee last 2.5 weeks in Hendersonville and Asheville. So how is the job market? I’m so glad you love Asheville.
The average median household income is about $45,000 annually which is below the national average of approximately $54,000. The median housing cost is about $ 285,000. Asheville is a blue collar town whose economy for the most part is tourist driven. There are some manufacturing and professional opportunities but most jobs are service driven. An average 2 bedroom apartment is around $1,200/mo plus utilities. Cost of living is about the national average. Asheville is an island of progressive diversity in a sea of conservatism. The entire region is food insecure with about 20% of the population being food insecure. 13.2% live below the poverty line. Outlying communities have higher poverty rates.
Asheville is a beautiful city with great amenities geared to making the tourist experience a great one. It is ideal for retirees who have above average financial resources to offset the higher cost of housing and healthcare that prevail or those that have well paying jobs that allow a work from anywhere arrangement. The climate is moderate with 4 distinct seasons. Infrastructure has not kept up with population growth thus a gap in adequate roads and traffic flow. Affordable housing is almost nonexistent for working class citizens who work in the service industry. Like any community undergoing growth and change, Asheville is evolving and what draws folks here today may drive them away tomorrow. My advice is do your homework before you move here or anywhere after a tourist high or an appealing ad or travel experience story.
