    I was born in Asheville in 1967 and went off to college back in 1986. When I was growing up, Asheville was not very active, other than a festival a couple of times a year. It used to be the vacation spot of the super rich a 100 years ago and then the Depression hit. The buildings were frozen in time, with Art Deco buildings everywhere. Then, sometime in the late 80's, people from all over the US discovered Asheville, and made the trip like you to come and live there. They are the ones that revitalized the town. I now go back often and wish it were like it is today when I grew up. I think you'll have an easy time adjusting to the culture as its probably similar to the San Fran area, but without the ocean. The mother's side of my family still lives there. My family and ancestors were the very first to settle in Western North Carolina. Ancestry DNA even recognizes our family as an original settlers, which is kind of neat but odd in a way. I'm glad your there. We need more independent thinkers in North Carolina.

    We just completed our drive/move from Charlotte North Carolina to San Jose California. This video made me a little queasy/sad about leaving North Carolina. I miss it so much! California is overwhelming. Congratulations on buying a house out there! I know you both will love it soo much!

      Crystal, this is weirdly so comforting to me 💕 Editing this made me a little queasy and sad about leaving the west coast, albeit ultimately grateful for being here in AVL. There truly is no place like your original home - I still think the PNW is the most beautiful place in the world - but how cool is it we have the opportunity to extend our roots and try out new places to call home? I hope CA is treating you well :) I’m sure you’ll be a Bay Area pro in time. If you need a quick getaway, head to Santa Cruz and have a picnic overlooking the ocean watching surfers head down to a famous surfing spot. If you’re on IG, send me a DM! I’d love to stay in touch

    Congrats on the move! And buying a house! I love the areas around Asheville, though I haven't been to the city itself. I live in Atlanta during the summers, and hike a lot in North Georgia and cross into NC frequently. Your montage of driving into the Smoky Mountains made me want to be back so much! Haha!
    I actually started watching your channel in September because of your San Francisco videos. I turned 16 in August! and an aunt and uncle took me to SF in October to celebrate. It was a city I'd wanted to visit for as long as I could remember (and it was amazing!), but when coming up with my itinerary, I was so confused with where to start. I knew I wanted to do Haight and Chinatown (among so many other places!) and your videos helped to give me a sense of how much time I wanted to plan to spend in each place. Anyway, sorry for that long piece of useless information, but I really love your content and look forward to seeing more soon. Also--I am very excited for the video on East Coast/West Coast comparisons!

      I'm a born and raised local, 6th generation actually, and all the transplants (mostly from Florida, new York and California) are driving the housing market sky high where many locals move out of state and either can't afford to be here or just don't want to be. The influx of people moving here is causing DESTRUCTION to the very mountains you all come here for because of the apartments and hotels being built. This is why many TRUE locals aren't very friendly to transplants. Please don't move here. We're beyond full. The traffic is horrendous compared to what it was, the drug problem is RIDICULOUS, homelessness is RAMPANT, crime is high, prices are high and it takes two plus jobs to survive. Sounds like heaven right?

      I moved away last month cause a single person who pays her own bills and lives alone after loosing her well paid housekeeping job. Could not find a job more than minimum wage or restaurant work . I’m happy you found a beautiful home and are happy. I would like to know your thoughts after a year and every year after that. I see you work from home. And probably have the same wage you had when you lived in the bay. So your not subject to being stuck in traffic all day getting from job to job.

    I am happy I found your channel! I'm planning a relocation to Asheville from San Diego in April with my dog. This made me excited! Any insight into diversity since you've been there? It's the only trepidation I have. Thanks!

    • @margauxv25
      @margauxv25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is some diversity here. Maybe not as much as I hoped. Diversity in types of people not nessarily colors. Huge russian, polish community, I think 8 percent black, huge LGBTQ community. I personally have not experienced any racism yet, everyone has been very friendly but I have been here less than a year.

Here I am subscribed to your channel tonight, looking through your adventures, and what do I see? MOVING TO ASHEVILLE 1 month ago! Wow. I am one county over in Hendersonville. What an incredibly small world it is. Hope you are loving our Western North Carolina mountains. I LOVE your videos so far and plan to watch everything you've posted about the West Coast! Thank you for helping me plan my bucket list trip!

    Wow, how do you like living in Asheville now that (I'm assuming) you've been there for awhile? (We got married in Asheville several years ago ... live in Portland but have strongly considered moving to Asheville). WHAT AREA were you in at the beginning [60 miles from Asheville] where you showed the area from the freeway? Was that 3astern Tennessee -- maybe Knoxville area?
    Great video and such a cute dog!

      Thanks, Thomas! :) We’re definitely missing how easily we got good food from around the world in the Bay - Korean, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Liberian - that’s something we took for granted. But we are slowly finding the good places out here. Faves so far have been BBQ, American breakfast places and an Indian street food restaurant

    Before passionately venturing to greener pastures in Asheville, NC, please take a little time to consider the impact you make/could make on the community, rather than myopically focusing solely on your own needs and desires. Also, the job market here is quite dismal in many respects and the housing crisis and shortage even worse. I'm not naysaying or shaming anyone for dreaming or for wanting better for themselves, but I think a healthy balance, as with anything, is key in terms of development and colonization of so called "meccas" of civilization. Yes, a certain amount of gentrification is inevitable and actually, indirectly, such growth is what affords most places a richer, greater sense of culture and sophistication, or progress if you will. However, since the boom in late 80s, then through the 90's, and the exponential boom from then until presently, Asheville has become so overflowing with migration, transplants, and gentrification, that it has, sadly, in many ways, become a gross caricature of itself, with many of the infrastructural, founding people along with their cultural contributions, forced (or opting to move) out due to the repercussions of over gentrification, and, for lack of a better term, socio-cultural-economic metastasis of such malignantly cancerous growth, however benign the original method and means may have been. The rich culture presently touted is, in fact, a watered down, fractional version of what could be found at least a decade ago, if not longer--and what has come to replace it is, predominantly, just more junk that can be found conveniently in any other given large metropolis, which actually serves to draw more of that particular demographic that hustles past the pesk of street beggar-performers to get to their starbucks fix and then back to their new, quaint, eccentric mountain home that drives up property taxes, etc..to supply the streets with a fresh batch of starving artists. The water's fine, but full; so please think before you leap...the bones you break may, and may not, be your own.

    I moved out of Asheville after 5 years. To much traffic and rent is to high. I’m a single person who pays their own bills. After I lost my awesome job making 17.00 part time. I could only find retail and restaurant jobs paying to low for me to survive. Curious if you brought your jobs with you? But it’s a lot easier if you have a partner to share of the bills with

      This is is true. Houses are very expensive and in short supply right now. If you can get a job at a decent wage, working remotely, you"LL be better off. One bedroom apartments are averaging 1200 a month.

      Florida native but married to a native of Western NC . I didn't know Asheville existed until I started dating my wife and we lived there for 5 years. The area is pretty, but it's a challenge to live there. Rent tripled over the years and the city has no room to expand. All hospitality jobs. BMW wanted to build a plant there and Buncombe County let Sierra Nevada Brewery take the location and BMW went next door to Greenville SC. That city is for rich retirees or trust fund kids. I gave it a try but it wasn't my cup of tea. I feel sorry for the locals who are being pushed out.
