We garden, seed save, raise meat rabbits, raise chickens, process our own meat, save our own seed, can, bake, and do just about everything that we can ourselves to achieve a self sufficient and debt free life for our family.

    Got to say the best part of You Tube is seeing the friendships that form between You Tubers and between the You Tubers and their subscribers. We farmed many years ago, if I were to do things over I would do things much differently. We also raised small animals pets for pet stores (common back then, not something I would ever consider doing now) We had a litter of rabbits born and the momma refused to care for them. The next rabbit birth was a full 2 days away. We fostered the new born bunnies in with a cage with two momma rats with litters. The rats kept them alive and well until we could foster them with another mamma rabbit.

      Good Simple Living And Homesteading Of all the rodents we raised rats are the best. I would go into the barn put my hand in the cage and “wore” the rat on my shoulder. The babies would sleep in a pocket or hood. Trouble is you would have to clean cage a lot. Especially males. They will go in the same place most rodents do.

      Because rabbits are protein neutral! You would die of starvation in a week or so, if you only ate rabbit. They are specifically NOT a good meat source. That's why people who know what they are doing dont farm rabbits, they dont kill things that they can not benefit from.
      Look it up, no protein in rabbits at all!

    • @GoodSimpleLiving
      @GoodSimpleLiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheTraveler1976 oh my goodness, no, rabbits have very high protein! The reason you would starve if you only ate rabbit is because they are so lean, and the body requires fat and cholesterol to function. It's actually called protein poisoning, and its starvation from entering an extreme level of ketosis. Add butter, drink milk, eat cheese, whatever, diversify your diet, and rabbit meat is an excellent protein. Where do folks get this stuff?! The internet is ridiculous.

    I dont raise any animals but I find this interesting . I did have an idea for your tractor and the wire bottom. Depending on if you have the space if you have a section of yard you could put down mesh 2×4 type and stake it down to the ground and let the grass grow through it . If done properly then you could still cut the grass if needed with a push mower nothing too heavy. That area would have to be used for light use to avoid damage but if the grass grows at a good rate may not need to be that big of area. Solves the escaping rabbits if only used for the diggers .

      Homesteading while working full time & raising a family is doable. Just remember start small. It's a lot of trial and error. If something doesn't work then just make adjustments, try different methods & you will find a way to make things work. 💜

    On your rabbit tractor. I help a guy build his and to stop the grass matting down he used some small like 2" x 3" rectangle fence wire instead of hail screen on the bottom so that most of the grass didn't get laid down and rabbits couldn't get to it when tractor was moved and the wire size opening would discourage them from digging out. Also protect them in case a fox or coyote found the tractor and couldn't dig in.

    Cheryl Morgner here from SOAST Homestead: When I was a pre-teen, I used to have a pet rabbit, but got rid of it eventually. I never raised rabbits for meat before. But I am in the middle of trying to set up a homestead on my parents’ property where I grew up. I’m starting out first with the gardening. And I’ve been doing some research for bringing in chickens, and rabbits, and perhaps quail at some point. But I have noticed that even though I live in the country, most people know nothing about eating rabbit meat. Also, the ones that I’ve talked to about it, have that “cuteness factor” issue with just the “thought” of eating rabbit meat, even though they’ve never tried it before. Makes me a little concerned for raising them for meat only for us, when I want to grown my operation to be capable of selling to other within our community.

    • @GoodSimpleLiving
      @GoodSimpleLiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the same here, but I've never had trouble selling rabbit. Folks may not want to harvest it, but they seem to have little pause about eating it, especially those with dietary limitations.

    I love Hidden Hieghts Farm. I am sure I am gonna love your page also. Kevin has helped so much with our raised beds. I raised meat rabbits years ago, started out as a FFA project. Before we called it quits we had over 50 breeders all of kinds lops, checkered giants, siamese, Californians and several others, It was a good little side income, plus most for our family of 6
