I was gonna say, I'll check behind my dryer amongst all the single socks for that F-35, but if it's been found, can we work on my husband's house and store keys next?
Now, for the sad part... I'm distraught by another awful incident at the races. I watched last year as Aaron Hogue slammed into the ground in a horrible blaze, and at first I didn't even realize what I'd seen. My heart and prayers go out to the loved ones of this year's accident as well.

When the F-35's are parked at Oshkosh for the airshow they are guarded 24/7 by heavily armed military personnel. They look like a SWAT team and have signs displayed that say they are allowed to 'shoot as necessary'. Very scary. Yet they lose one in-flight? The transponder magically turned itself off? Yeah right.

Hi, Dan. We met you at the Reno Air Race on Saturday. We were right under the planes when they crashed. They ran into each other on the last pile on. The planes miraculously avoided the homes in the area. We had plane parts showering down on us. It was pretty scary. You mentioned no one was in the area, but there were homes and we were part of a group of motor homes that hang out on the fence line at the last pile on. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for all you do!

I was at the races when one aircraft crashed and went into the stands; I was not hurt, but as a GA pilot myself, I was traumatized! Knowing the rules in the air, spacing, etc., it was difficult to understand how it happened. I moved (nothing to do with the accident) and am too far away to attend now, sad, because I used to attend air races regularly, but I do keep up with the air-race news so thanks, Dan, I'm sorry that happened last month at Reno. My condolences to the pilots' families.

"Planes cross the finish line and climb to pattern altitude, and turn the OPPOSITE way from the course to enter a downwind.."
Are you sure that is correct? Don't the planes climb and fly a cooldown in the same direction as the race and when they are ready, they enter the pattern which is also in the same direction as the race, counterclockwise?
If they did what you claim after the finishing line, they'd be entering the pattern directly after a full-on race at 50 feet, at whatever intervals they happen to cross the line in, and fly the pattern over the grandstand. Must be a mistake there?

Thanks for the explanation! If you have to follow the RARA rules, so be it. However, if you did have the video,, now that the Reno races are supposedly finished, it should relieve you of the obligation to not show a crash. I have a pretty good idea what happened anyway. Inattention, loss of situational awareness, etc. Only takes one mistake to cause a crash sometimes. I've had two crashes myself, so I've used up 8 of my 9 lives, if I'm a cat. Always helpful to learn from others mistakes, though.

Dan Gryder's video on the Reno crash will be an unhinged rant where he slanders the two dead pilots, claiming that they have a long track record of irresponsible behavior based on an "anonymous source at Reno" that he will never name and a purposeful misreading of the information in the pilot records database. The "anonymous source" will later be proven in court to be his own butt. Also, he'll call the NTSB a bunch of idiots, even thought they haven't even released a preliminary report yet.

Unfortunately, it's the race fans and the racers that killed Reno. They'd rather have no races than ones where people don't kill themselves, and they proved it with their own actions. At least now they can still feel resentful and oppressed by the big mean goons at the FAA.

If we are going to continue our races and airshows we must learn to accept SOME losses obviously. It's never going to be completely safe .We are flying 80 year old planes into races with sometimes limited money and not enough flight time training in them like a military pilot would get . Some of these guys are mid 60s or later in age and pulling Gs for 10 minutes will have an effect on them .I like the idea of racing but they put a P-51 into the grandstand a few years ago,a jet death last year and a B17 was cut in half at an airshow and just this weekend an italian jet was ejected from on take of and managed to hit a car killing the occupants. This is just a few reasons why this stuff should end or losses expected because they keep happening

When ejecting the explosion from the ejection seat is suppose to drive the nose of the plane down causing it to dive into the ground . For what ever reason that didn't happen. My question is, why did the pilot bail . He was a mile from the airport at 1000 feet . The plane continued on for 60 miles on it's own .

whatever is the races future (& hopefully they do continue onwards and forwards), this did a lot to bring them to where they are today...
do not know if the sport needs their own Jim Villeneuve and crusade for safety, but it certainly is a sport whose death-rate would be unacceptable in any other modern motor-sport.... which of course goes hand in hand with the high-risk, high speed, nature that makes El-Reno what it is.

Need an immediate retrofit to all F-35's of a helium filled balloon attached to a dental floss container. If another jet ends up in a swamp or lake the balloon would pop up to the surface and mark the location. This is of course assuming that the water is no deeper than 48.1 yards.

The military asking the civilian world to help find one of their aircraft is embarrassing especially as pilots are supposed to know where they are at all times. This pilot has a limited career ahead of him. US tax payers paid for the damn plane let military find it. As far as RENO, obviously condolences to the family's . However how stubborn do you have to get to call this series off. How many deaths are required to drop your hubris and move on. This is insane . Good people dieing FOR WHAT? Proving they can disregard the airframe limitations modifying them without FAA approval flying beyond the envelop? These pilots could be with their families TODAY, if the organisers and pilots had any sense. How many pilots sulphide next year for the pleasure of the crowd? If your all family have a reunion, eat some BBQ and fly home.

Race management were told after Jimmy Leeward's crash that the races needed to fundamentally transform their planning and structure if they wanted to continue to exist. Since the average race fan hates the FAA only slightly less than prostate cancer, the decision was instead made to ignore and fight. This was absolutely the wrong decision, made by ignorant people.
This might have worked IF they had internally repaired their system so people stopped dying. They didn't. They just ran the clock out until the insurance companies finally stepped in, and then it was all over.
      Reno killed Reno.
