In Thai, we have an idea about controling our mind and feeling. The opening scene from those meteos was representing the destruction of your mind that has been hit by the unpleasent things which could happened at anytime in your life. It doesn't mean the physical one. The world represent in this song is your own world. Visual message in each sections give us the clues to grab the meaning.
You can see the word smiling face in the lyrics. This line reflects the cultures of Thai people when one's smile can be interpreted in many ways. That's why we have word like ยิ้มสู้. Literally means Smile(ยิ้ม) + fight(สู้). 🙂
This compound word has depth meaning. The meaning can vary from - "Hold tight" against any incoming bad situations without hesitation and/or hold back. It's like the alamo of your feeling. Or indirect meaning like "Don't give up easily".
Lyrics of this song reflects Thai culture and way of life. Embrace moement. What was, was. Be prepare but not panic for the future. It doesn't means we don't care or worry about. We do care and worry. We've just acknowledge it and let it go. Otherwise you couldn't live in peace at every each moment you're breathing because your mind running around over sth in the past you couldn't fixed or changed. Or goes out to somewhere/something in the future that doesn't happen yet. Embrace the moment is key. Enjoy life. You're lucky enough to wake up and see the sun again.
By the way, I love you guys comments and interpret the meaning of this song including critics over our boys in many aspects. Complimentary & derogatory is part of Eight Worldly Certainties. That's normal things in life. Don't hesitate to do it. They are mature enough to absorb it. Cheers !!! 🙏

The take of Funnytoss on Budhism effect on the bodyslam part was really spotted on. When they began their journey, the lyrics were mostly about typical love and heartbeak. However as the band become more mature post 2010s, mind you the band was more than 20 y/o, the lyrics have also evolved to be more about life, inspiration, working though the hardship and humility in more philosophical ways. Some fans have even went so far as to say that when Bodyslam write song about love, it get so profound and very philosophical. Buddhism philosophy also playing big parts in their lyrics. The lyrics of Leave it all behind fits perfectly with mantra of the band. The peak of their popularlity was during 2005-2010.
I however really enjoyed both of your take on the song. Awesome VID.

one thing i want to comment on is about Bodyslam. most all of us never heard about them til now. from what i understand they have been around for a long time and huge in Thailand. in the past Babymetal has picked the bands that go with them seem to be lesser name bands that Babymetal has helped get attention. here in 2019 in the northwest of the US part of the tour they had The Hu tour with them and it made them a lot of attention and they have been played a lot on US media. i know this is a F.Hero song but didn't know Bodyslam and like others now a lot more people know them. this song is so good when you realize it has three different bands, styles, genres all flowing together almost like it is made to do. i love the lyrics of this song. like all Babymetal songs, this song has so much positivity and feel good meanings.

Loved hearing y'all's thoughts, thanks for recording this! I too have had this song on repeat; despite it not being all that heavy, there is a nostalgic quality to the sound that I'm really digging. Su sounds amazing in this and I love the harmonizing she does with the Bodyslam vocalist - I hope we get more of this whenever BABYMETAL does collabs in the future. I also think that Moa and Momo will have more parts moving forward, and this and Metali have me really looking forward to what new BABYMETAL music will sound like :)

I watched countless reactions of this song. I saw the length of your vdo and curious how can reaction be so long. I wasn’t sure if I could finish it.
I fished. I listened to every bits. I enjoy your discussion a lot and agree with most of the points.
As Thai, I appreciate that you understand and link the song to Thai culture. I was a fan of Bodyslam even before they became Bodyslam. I also listen to many song of F. Hero. When it comes to poetry rhyme, linguistically beautiful, he is well known and the best for this.
After moving to several countries, I listen to diverse genres, languages and artists. I’m a fan of Linkin Park and get to know about Babymetal from Pa Pa Ya.
Bodyslam’s music evolved as they grow up and experience different things. Normally their songs are kind of soft(er) rock. Most of their bangers are lyrical impressive, which fall into to one of Thai music genre “Phleng phuea chiwit” (direct translation = song for life). I guess, the reason they are only famous in Thailand because of the language. Only Thai people can relate their songs to personal experience.
About this collaboration, F. Hero explains in a clip which I saw on TH-cam. He loves, respects Bodyslam a lot. He collaborated with Bodyslam before. Bodyslam also respects F. Hero. The guitarist of Bodyslam (his nickname is Yod) is a fan of Babymetal and he was in the concert that F. Hero performed with Babymetal in Japan. F. Hero always feels so grateful to Babymetal that they invited him to work with them on Pa Pa Ya. Since that time, he always wants to work with Babymetal again. He is the initiator of this collaboration and the one that linked Bodyslam with Babymetal as he loves both bands. Another important person of this project is Thitiwat Rongtong. (Nickname = Mac)He is a member of Thai metal band “the darkest romance.” He and F. Hero have been working together in several project.

    • @AndrewHartley
      @AndrewHartley  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Thanks for this. Yes, my sense listening to Bodyslam was that their power lay in their specifically Thai take on the rock sound, particularly lyrically, which is why I felt like I was missing something as a westerner simply responding to the music. I should have expressed that more clearly in the video. Appreciate the comment.

@@AndrewHartley Just to add on…Toon the vocalist took sometime as career break to do some charity projects. One of the legendary project is “Kao Kon La Kao” (= one step each). He ran from the southern most to the northern most of Thailand for fund raising. The donated money was distributed to many hospital around the country. His bandmade also supported him a lot, some of them also ran with him but only few completed the whole route.
If you can find some clips, you will see that this band inspired a lot of young generation. Whenever he passed the school, there will be school band play Bodyslam song, sometimes he jammed with the kids. The epic song that became OST of that charity project is “Sang Sud Tai” (the last light).
For F. Hero (Nickname Golf), Thai language is his strength but somehow he manages to collaborate with artists from several countries Thai (countless), Japan (not only Babymetal), Korea, Cambodia, Laos. His genre may not your cup of tea. Thanks to Pa Pa Ya that’s why we have great song to listen. I added to my running playlist, so cool, so energized. 😅

An interesting and fun discussion. Some really great points on the meta significance of the song and production. Thanks.
It seems to me that the recording was not done with everyone together in the studio. My too sensitive ear tells me there would have been a better pitch match on the octave harmony between Su- and Toon on at least one note had they actually been able to hear each other. But sometimes isolation of headphones or recording booths can also create that. Nonetheless, it was really great to hear them singing together.

It's like Su once said All things are possible through Babymetal. 3 different styles singing a comprehensive song that works great is amazing. I really hope that Babymetals next album is a collection of collaborations at this level. Metal! and this song are fantastic. It's like you said in someways this kind of blend of genres is what Babymetal does. And they hooked us into the never-ending question of what will they do next? I don't know but I think they're a lot of people here for it.

Very interesting breakdown as always! I think they did an amazing job, giving all three artists an equal part of the song (one could argue that F. Hero fell a bit short ,but I think his harsh vocals added a lot).
This could easily been a Babymetal song IMO but making it the song of a rather unknown artists gives them a chance to shine and take the credits which shows how much respect all three artists have for each other.
Su in particular seems a lot more kawaii in this song which I appreciate a lot.

I again appreciate your video ありがとうございます 💛 from Japan for the analysis with funnytoss this time. I was very happy to see funnytoss in person finally in Japan. In addition, he made a pertinent comment on the feature of songs created by/with BABYMETAL: "It's fun to speculate".
I am speculating that BABYMETAL have been going on two kinds of journey : (1) journey to repay favors (恩返し) (2) journey to take on a new challenge.
Speaking of (1), they started with tour with Sabaton. “Oh! Majinai” is a song representing a bright or even hilarious side of BABYMETAL after that Dark Side era. BABYMETAL must have appreciate the appearance of Joakim as a comical character that is totally opposite to his own.
BABYMETAL performed “Kingslayer” with BMTH on stage. This song was a kind of savior to them in an inactive COVID period. BMTH have continued to perform this song without BM’s intervention even in their hiatus period.
When it comes to (2), “Metali!” with Tom Morello and “The End” with Lil Uzi Vert are good examples.
The new song “Leave It All Behind” is a mixture of (1) and (2) in my speculation. F. Hero is a great contributor with his energetic figure in PA PA YA!! that shed a glaring light to the post-Dark Side era. And collaboration with BODYSLAM will newly enlarge BABYMETAL world musically and commercially (including Asian market).
I, of course, love the juxtaposition of heaviness and clearness in this song that are both positive and encouraging.

Thanks for the great conversation. I’ll add just a note on the choreography. BABYMETAL made an overt choreographic reference to Sue’s hometown musical heroes PERFUME - at approx 18:59 - 19:00 in your video, the move where they bring both hands/arms to their chest and away, and back a couple of times - that’s a signature move from PERFUME’s choreography of their song EDGE. The move comes when the subtitles read: “GET BACK, dancing girl, burning soul.” I’m sure you know both PERFUME and BABYMETAL share a choreographer. And BABYMETAL has definitely taken production cues from PERFUME who are the cutting edge in technology production in large venues. Going to see them AGAIN in San Francisco soon. Lucky me.

*The under utilization of Babymetal collabs was strongly influenced on how all that was done. I'd say except Pa Pa Ya and Oh Majinai it was just bands that Koba liked and he contacted them by email and they sent a piece back to Japan, but there is not really a friendship relationship between the bands. one that we see them having with F.Hero or Bring me the Horizon.
*The ship evokes me images from the drying of Aral Sea, some kind of human made desolation. I don't think there is a deeper meaning than finding an image that provokes a desolation emotion for visual impact in there.
*I don't know where I read that the Bodyslam guitar player is a Babymetal fan. They don't do that kind of sound, but in that little solo section he must have seen his chance to unleash something he can't do with the rock band.

Su harmonized with Rob Halford for Painkiller and Breaking the law, and in 2013 she collabed with the JAM project - no video exists, and she appeared as Su-metal without Yui and Moa. th-cam.com/video/IXf8g4jTEAs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v5OFNJG-5kGQrRLR The song for all F. Hero was under utilized, was produced by F. Hero so it has to be his choice. I felt as I considered the song, that Babymetal has a large international footprint, compared to Bodyslam and F. Hero, and that Babymetal was given a boost early on by artists like Lady Gaga who brought them on tour, and several others, and in a way, this is Babymetal giving back, and that's something I respect.

Though adopted and presented in slightly different ways in our daily lives, Buddhism is what people of both countries commonly have in spirits. Behind the positive attitude of this song, I felt a sense of resilience by accepting the impermanence of life.

A ray of dazzling light shining into a world that had been shut in darkness,
It is the descent of the incarnation of the Sun Goddess,
Then the Smiling Angelic dance begins, their surroundings are brightly illuminated,
and like the dawn, the world of light begins to come to life once again,
At last the Sun Goddess appears, and throws a luminous smile,
The time has come to save this planet's dark and gloomy future by filling it with light,

The kind of analogy or metaphor that came to mind for me in hearing this was kind of three people having a conversation. I was struck by the degree to which each band is there doing what they ACTUALLY DO, particularly since I have found BM's participation in other people's songs (Kingslayer, The End) to be less what they actually do and more just what people (who don't know them) THINK they do. In LIAB, it's different, BM appears at first in shallow cheerleader mode but then pretty soon it winds up being BABYMETAL doing BABYMETAL. And I do feel that the song's overall structure is part of what BM contributed, so even that cheerleader mode into F.HERO's heavier part switch is arguably BABYMETAL as well. The thing that I wanted to mention though is that it's not just that each gets to do their own thing-I think they each try taking on the others' point of view a little, that's why it felt kind of conversational. The reason we don't hear Bodyslam doing this kind of stuff in their back catalog is that it isn't Bodyslam doing Bodyslam, it's Bodyslam doing Bodyslam-ized BABYMETAL. The "BBM" part could be seen as BABYMETAL-ized F.HERO. They're putting their own band's personalities in there, but also I'd say doing a little of their spin on the others'. And everything overlaps, they blend to the point that they reinforce each other. I'm really very impressed with how balanced and intergrated and well-crafted the whole endeavor is. Anyway. TED talk done.

You mentioned 80s pop and growls as two main ingredients of the song. I agree and think it's time to bring in Electric Callboy.
Electric Callboy is a German band that fusions these two genres, switching seam- and effortlessly between them. To achieve this, they have two vocalists: Nico for Europop and Kevin does the deathgrowls. They are also extremely funny. Two years ago, they blew up on the reaction channels and are currently selling out venues in the 10,000+ range.
Am I just bragging about some guys from my town who made it big? Could be, but for some other things:
Last summer there was talk about Babymetal watching Electric Callboy's gig in Boston. The photo that has been floated as evidence is too low quality to prove anything, but if authentic would suggest that BM was backstage, i.e. the two bands probably met.
According to Babymetal, EC is going to play at Fox Fest in April. The only other band to be announced for that lineup to date is Polyphia, of course a former Babymetal collaborator. Ever since that info dropped, I have had fantasies about a collaboration on stage.
And now Babymetal appears in a collab that is working along similar stylistic ideas. I have no idea how this will play out, but get the feeling that some sort of bigger picture might be evolving right in front of our eyes. Maybe you should chat with Funnytoss after FoxFest to get a first hand account. If you want to check out Electric Callboy yourself, I suggest the MVs of "Pump It Better" and "We've got The Moves".
I agree with all your comments regarding the song, especially the guitar solo being too short. It began, it was fast it was mean, and just as I had taken a deep breath and was ready to soar, it was already over. I felt betrayed, abused and lied to. Otherwise, this track is a total banger.

Great insight about the connection to Buddhist culture - I thought "both your joy and sadness, leave it all behind," was a strange message before but now I see how it makes sense. It's not about never feeling anything, it's about moving forward always. I think the way Bodyslam and BABYMETAL are given such a spotlight shows a great deal of respect from F.HERO. As someone primarily here for BABYMETAL, I thought the performance from Bodyslam's vocalist, Toon, was very good and soothing, which contrasts well with Su-Metal's voice. I enjoyed the song enormously & all played their part but I’m an unashamedly biased BABYMETAL fan & it’s them I want to talk about. I too noticed the “kawaii” elements were strong here in the video. All three leaning heavily into it too. Good to hear Momo & especially Moa getting much more to do vocally than we’ve been accustomed to recently. As for Su, as usual she stole the show for me . I read someone say it’s like Suzuka is cosplaying as SU-METAL & I totally get that but those vocals - that voice- is like a warm hug every time. She’s sheer class. Anyway thanks for the video always fun to hear your opinions .

Thank you Professor for another great breakdown! I have had this song on repeat the past two days now and it’s already been bringing me to tears. At this point I am still in a “don’t think feel” mode so I really don’t have my thoughts on this song collected in any coherent way yet: because of this I just took notes at certain points in this video and decided to share them.
The discussion about the number “5” is a mystery for sure, and I suspect Metalverse may have something to do with it. But I think if it is a reference, it’s to the lore of Metalverse and not the idol group itself. I suspect (based on interviews) that Metalverse as a concept is one of those things in Babymetal lore that is extremely vague for a reason and does have a deeper meaning and addresses something that is happening in real life, and it may be something philosophical in nature that these artists are in line with. Just my opinion. I think so much of this is still up to the interpretation of what the future holds.
Your statement about Bodyslam being “classic rock not by age but classic rock by design” I think is a much more common thing when it comes to rock and metal in the East Asian scene. Even bands like Maximum the Hormone and Nemophila give me 90s vibes with some of their music and it’s almost like rock and metal music is suspended in time over there.
Yeah, Moa and Momo’s “Yo! Do it Do it Now!” part was probably one of the cutest things I have heard from Babymetal ngl.
The Thailand representation discussion really makes me think about how this song was initially advertised as “making history.” Based on interviews with Koba, I truly do believe Babymetal’s aim is to unite the music scene across the globe, and I believe they are capable of doing it.
Like you, to me the #1 thing about Babymetal that I have always loved is their all-or-nothing approach to try new things and experiment. I don’t think there is any other popular band in the global scene capable of doing what they are doing with such a probability for success and a track record to prove it.
I think a lot of people wanted the guitar solo extended a bit longer, but no song is perfect, and I think that would have made the song too “perfect.” A part of good song writing I think is you want to leave people hungry for just a little more.
The points made about Buddhism I think resonate with me pretty strongly about my journey with Babymetal. BM has helped me learn more about how to enjoy music while living with ADHD; and when and where to put my attention at a given time has a worlds difference in how it impacts me.
    Also RIP Toriyama, Akira

Another great discussion. When I first heard this song I thought, meh! It didn't really float my boat. I didn't listen to the song again for a day and when I did, I couldn't believe that I didn't love it the first time around. I agree both you and Steven about each of the performers getting a fairly equal amount of exposure, I do disagree a little with the seamless way the song is stitched together. I feel it is in three quite distinct styles which in my mind might be an indicator that the song was recorded separately and edited and mixed by sound engineers.
It doesn't really matter which way it came together; the song is a banger and is on high rotation for me at the moment. I am also turning my thoughts to what could happen on Fox Day. I'm sure something will be announced, I hope it's a new album. I wonder if we have just been given the first single from studio album 5? Not long to wait, so all will be revealed soon.

    • @AndrewHartley
      @AndrewHartley  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, I did 't mean to suggest that it doesn't have distinct parts: clearly it does. I just think they are really well conceived as parts of a unified whole. As to this being a single off the new album, my guess is probably not, unless they change the way they identify songs like this, since it seems to be primarily an F Hero product. I'd be happy to be wrong about that, not least because if BM claim it as their own, there's a higher likelihood of it getting played live. Cheers!

    • @lencooke944
      @lencooke944 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@AndrewHartley I agree that it's unlikely to be a first single of a new album, but F. Hero and Babymetal are trixy; the identification of it as a F. Hero song could be a clever ruse.
I also get the feel that Babymetal's songwriters had a hand in BM's and Bodyslam's parts as there are a couple of 'running' references in there, Babymetal have running (used in an odd way) as a recurring word in a couple of songs. The two running references in the song are a little clumsy, or odd, in their use as well. So, if BM's songwriters had a joint role in writing parts of the song, it could legitimately be used as a track on an album. They have had colabs on albums before.
However, you are right, it is very unlikely.

I listened to this song and I either liked it or I didn't, that's enough for me. And I liked it.
I have not listened to all kinds of music in the world and I am not a music expert. So I have no knowledge to guess how this music was produced that way. So I don't show much interest in such things. And I don't want to be a know-it-all.
However, I thought the composition of the song made good use of the characteristics of the three artists. That's what makes it pleasant to listen to. It's not just BM outstands among them, but the backing BODYSLAM playing and the lead vocal's choruses are very consistent. F Hero's rapping is as strong as ever, and the vocal exchange with Su- is a nice touch. I can see some people points that the heavy part from the breakdown are short, ha. That is what we call an extravagant request. I am sure it will be a bit longer live, haha. Well, let's hope they give a chance to perform it live.
Watching the many of reaction videos for BM, Western reactors often say the music as 'this reminds me of / sounds like who's music'. Well, I try not to take it too seriously and I've never said below things before, so I dare to say it, but I wonder if it has still some underlying awareness that 'metal is for western, especially white, thing', or 'rock and pop music originated in the West, and your music is just an ape imitation of ours'... I am sorry, it was too much to say.
On the other hand, there is a phenomenon where Japanese music, Japanese metal, etc., they are beginning to attract interest in parts of the world. According to the fans, they say the music that sings in Japanese and contains Japanese elements, those are new. But conversely, if it is closer to Western music, they instantly lose interest. Well, I understand it, but I think they could broaden our horizons a bit more...No, I can't easily blame them because I also have narrow perspectives. It's difficult, isn't it?, haha.
I often hear comments on foreign BM reaction videos too, that 'I don't know what they are singing about, but it's kind of good'. A lot of this song is in Thai, so it is exactly the situation for me, but it's a pleasant listen. Well, when I read the English translation of F Hero's rap part, I think it is too simple and a bit boring, ha. But that's an extra request of mine. Why don't we just genuinely enjoy what kind of music different countries and different races play, without thinking too hard?, I think. Because the internet has made music from all over the world accessible and easy to listen to. Is the internet really making people happier... From Japan.

I agree that listeners have their own biases, some of which are shaped by their culture, but I would argue that we break those biases down by reflecting on them, not by not thinking 😊 I also agree that western fans sometimes try to put BM (and other bands from Japan) in a particular kind of Japanese box which is constraining and does not allow evolution or experimentation. Personally, I grew bored with this song after only a few replays. It's not a patch on Kingslayer. Its banger moments are too few and too brief and sound dissasociated from the rest of the song.
