Welcome to my TH-cam channel! I'm Andrew, better known as AJ, Hartley. I'm a novelist (International, award winning and New York Times bestselling, for what any of that is worth) and a Shakespeare professor at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where (though my Ph.D. is in literature) I mostly work on performance issues. I post about writing, travel, and one of my other passions, the Japanese Kawaii rock band, BabyMetal, though I do analytical discussions of the songs rather than straight reactions. As an artist, scholar, and cultural critic, my interests often overlap, so you may get bits of everything in a single video. Though I realize that I am, as they say, not for all markets, I hope you find bits of what I do entertaining or interesting.

Tense and touching, a story about a family managing autism, conflict, danger and the difficulties of making and keeping connections with those closest to us.

Do writers still need literary agents? AJ Hartley talks with agent, Stacey Glick (publishing #5)
มุมมอง 77วันที่ผ่านมา
Everything you ever wanted to know about literary agents: whether you need one for your book, what they can do for you in getting you a publisher, foreign rights, film and TV rights, how they get paid, how you get an agent in the first place and more. Agents remain your best shot at getting a deal with a major publisher because they act as quality screeners, and though it is certainly possible ...

Hello Andrew. I wonder if you had a chance to listen to the new Babymetal radio show on Tokyo FM, which many people are posting on TH-cam. The very first guests Babymetal had were Kanon and Mizyu, followed by Suzuka and Rin on the next weekly episode. Babymetal and AG had some discussions about what they might do in a possible collaboration.
Oh no…
I’m Japanese and moved to Canada when I was 29. Now, I teach at an elementary school here. Watching this documentary made me feel a lot of emotions-almost overwhelmed. It reminded me of the environment, social beliefs, and people I grew up with. However, what I teach my students feels so different from those experiences. It’s a different society and a new generation, but it made me realize that I can bring more meaningful lessons to my students to help them grow into better citizens for the future.
The girls sellout
残念ながら1発屋でした
Watched it from the very 1st episode, as i live in suffolk and had heard that they were filming around framlingham, its still one if my absolute favourite tv shows ever, and I've rewatched it 3 times, your review is spot on, the last special was the tv equivalent of toy story 4, not needed, not as good and probably not worth watching ever again.
Two things: first, I didn't know you are left-handed. Second, you need to start wearing underwear.
Ha!
Its pronounced .. bae-cough
Well damn, I missed this when it was on last year, however while watching your video my wife overheard the clips and immediately rattled off the title. I’ll be on the lookout for a 再放送
Great! Hope you like it.
This is why I now live in the south. We are going to experience some extremely cold temperatures this week and I’m not looking forward to it. Born in Calgary and enjoy the odd visit but that’s it.
Ha. Yeah, we've got teen temps this week, but at least it's rare.
That scares me, I have nearly drowned three times, but none of those were caused by thin ice giving way and trapping me underneath. I know life is experienced best right on the edge, but that's a touch close for me. Stay safe Professor, I'm too old to find a new favourite author.
Thanks, Len! I don't think I was in serious danger: the ice was thick and we were close to shore. If I'd gone through I would have been unbelievably cold but I doubt the water would have been deep enough to trap me. Appreciate the concern though :)
東京五輪
Just checked German Netflix, and it's there. I'll watch it after I finished binging the pile of Babymetal DVDs that arrived from Japan earlier this week. The urge to belong somewhere, the need for safety, especially in a world that seems to come apart day by day - powerful stuff. While Rainman did cross my mind, a better comparison might be "Hello, Mister God, this is Anna". A child of similar age, also aparently victim of domestic violence, bursts into the life of a working class London family. It upends their life, especially that of a son called Finn, but turns it to the better in a number of ways.
Yeah, I mentioned Rainman just because it is one of many narratives in which the problems of autism are minimized by genius in other ways, as if all autistic people are savants (The Good Doctor is another instance). It's a tiresome trope which ultimately doesn't take the condition seriously. But yes, see what you think. It's uneven but there's lots of good stuff in there, I think.
なんか進歩がないよね😅マンネリ
This seems like a show that I will very much enjoy watching. Thanks for the recommendation! The only Asian TV I've ever watched dealing with autism is the South Korean drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo." That show clearly drew heavily on the story of Professor Temple Grandin. It sounds like this Japanese show is very different from that one.
Yes, I think this show avoids the "Rain Man" problem of representing autism as merely some communicative oddities masking a kind of magical genius. See what you think.
@@AndrewHartley I look forward to it!

I've always enjoyed your recommendations! I liked "Unnatural" very much, and I'll be checking this out too (thankfully it's available on Netflix for me)!
I hope you like it and am glad Unnatural worked for you. It's still one of my favorites. Have you tried Miss Sherlock?
@@AndrewHartley Not yet; it's not available on any of the streaming services I'm currently subscribed to! But I've definitely got that penciled in as well! A fun tidbit about watching Unnatural was recognizing the lead actress from another drama I enjoyed (H2 - Kimi to Ita Hi) years ago, as well as *finally* figuring out where "Lemon" was from
@ great song
I was delighted to hear Ms Glick invite follow-up questions directly to her. And also delighted to hear that she deals with non-fiction works as well as fictional works.

I loved the interview, even though AG fans don't really like Snacktime. They've grown a lot since then, both locally and internationally.
Thanks!
@kodokunogourmet-tvtokyo

Happy New Year. That sounds like an other productive year, hopefully many more to come, I usually say: happy and healthy new year, but I should add: productive as well, hopefully without stress. It actually is a pretty common story on TH-cam, the videos you spend the least time on become the most popular on your channel. 🙂 The videos you spend the most time on might end up with disappointing results sometimes. A book with a time travel theme, that sounds very interesting to me. Something I've been wondering, did you catch the Babymetal radio program, especially because they have Atarashii Gakko as guests ?
Thanks, and same to you! Yes, I have kept track of the recent BM radio conversation with AG! Some exciting possibilities there. I hope the double header tour they mentioned comes to be. That would be awesome!
@@AndrewHartley who would have thought we could have such content of BM and AG together ? The radio show is a completely unrepresented move by Babymetal. And then they invite AG as well !
Thank you for such a substantial critical review! I somehow found this show a while back and enjoyed it quite a bit, recently viewing it for the second time. You articulated a number of aspects I hadn't picked up on or fully considered. I too found the returning older geiko character brash and abrasive at first - I was expecting her to set up some sort of manufactured conflict or drama but that did not happen, instead she is more or less accepted for who she is and assimilated back into the fabric of the house. One character that puzzled me was the daughter of the house mother who lives there but is not one of the trainees, Ryoko I think is her name. She is the one who immediately throws a wet blanket over the two lead girls' excitement on arrival by telling them the tasks they will be expected to perform and advising them to leave. She's so sullen and morose and her mother, while benevolent, seems to have little clue how depressed and unhappy she is. Later on there is a hint of what is troubling her, but it is never really fully explored. I guess her character is there to contrast some of the brightness elsewhere in the series? I loved the two main characters who share this unwavering devotion to each other; Kiyo is indefatigably industrious, sunny and cheerful (but never to the point of being overbearing, at least for me) while Sumire is more driven and focused, much more of an emotional open book with everything she is feeling visible on her face whether she has lines or not. Sumptuously filmed and I enjoyed the quietness of it, like observing real people going about their everyday lives within this tiny, fictionalized neighbourhood where the modern world seems to be mostly held at arms' length. No artificial conflicts or plot structures, no snappy dialogue no one would say in real life, just people coming and going, pursuing their passions and spending time with each other like they did in the pre digital world. The whole show is like one of Kiyo's comfort dishes! I did think it odd that these apparently very young characters are permitted to pack up and go off to devote themselves to an archaic artistic tradition and no one seems bothered in the least. The father of Sumire shows up, but only after months have seemingly passed and he is mostly mollified and placated while he is around. Incidentally, the actress who plays Sumire also stars in another film on Netflix titled Drawing Closer, which has resonated with me even more than Makanai did. I'm not sure if it is something you would enjoy or review but worth considering. She is playing another very young character, about the same age as Sumire but in a very different, more contemporary setting with cellphones and social media prevalent. It's a tragic teen romance that is much more aggressive in eliciting an emotional reaction from the audience than Makanai; a classic tearjerker against a backdrop of terminal illness that is ultimately life affirming, I think, and subverts expectations of the genre by having the characters express their feelings more through art, symbolism, and mutual devotion than overt declaration. It is ambiguous enough that I questioned at times whether it even was about a romantic sort of love; I think it is, though like in Makanai it is a very pure and chaste, idealized version. Wonderful performance by the lead actress, a very different character from Sumire but with some similar aspects of innocence and emotional vulnerability that feel very unaffected and true to life. I really haven't yet been able to move on and watch something else, it has so affected me and I see from comments in various places that others have had a similar experience, "it made me feel human" was one memorable one I read which kind of sums it up. Thank you once again for your knowledge and insight!
Thanks for your thoughts and for the recommendation. I'll see if I can get Drawing Closer. My next reviews will probably be for After School Doctor and Light of my Lion. Cheers.
Super insightful! Thanks for sharing this

To date, KYOTO has kept its charming traditional antique "look" because it was not aerial bombed by the USAF during WWII. It has been said that Kyoto was not bombed because one of the top American military planners took the city off the target list because he had a sentimental attachment to the city because he and his wife had spent their honeymoon there before the war. Be that as it may, the city survived the war relatively unscathed, and it has retained its quaintness by surviving the COVID PANDEMIC of 2020 and keeping the unique GEIMAIKO tradition alive. hopefully for many years to come.
I love how his paw is moving in his sleep. :-))

Creepy as hell
People think that Japanese people prioritize "the whole" than the "individual". The idea that we need to prioritize "the whole" stems from the idea that we can never understand each other 100%. This is why we need to educate different perspectives and how we affect each other for the better or worse. We know how we feel and think ourselves, but what about the people next to you? This is why we need to learn when and how not to be selfish. It is not about which is more important, it is the time, place and occasion that matters.
agreed

While we more casual fans of Babymetal have been listening to a mix including Gimme Chocolate ... frozen in time but now (wow!!) 10 years old .... and not paying full attention, they've transitioned from girls to women ... articulate, funny, and starting to shape their own path.
