If you want to avoid jerkiness, you need a smooth ball head, something like Markins, KPS, or FLM. For something compact, strong, and SMOOTH that can also work as a video head and a monopod head as well as a tripod head, check out KPS's G4D or G5D. www.dpreview.com/reviews/mid-sized-ball-heads-tested/4

One issue that I run into occasionally with 'pods (mainly monopods but it has happened on light-weight tripods too) is resonances. If I record very loud amplified music like live concerts I have run into it with the kick-drum for rock, and also for Japanese taiko drums. The amplified thump causes the whole monopod and camera to shake in rhythm. I know what to do about it when it happens, but I was wondering if some 'pods are better than others for this? I use a cheap Optex TM50. I have run into similar problems with light-weight tripods. I also found that strong, constant wind can cause resonance effects too.

Hi Jordan. Oh, I agree! I have one. Use it with an XF400. Dare I suggest the matching iFootage head? Yup, there's lots of 'better' ones - I have an alternative - but this one is light, works and fits in the carry bag when still mounted on the monopod. Get a few of the quick release adapters whilst you are at it, they are part of what makes this a great supporting tool. BobUK.

I had the same issue with my Manfrotto monopod (561BHDV-1) that you described: it would seem to 'catch' when leaning/tilting and end up, inevitably, jerking the camera a bit and ruin the shot. Just about the time I was about to throw it in the garbage (since it was past the returnable time) I bought some grease (Lith-Ease White Lithium Grease) and applied it to the bottom of the monopod. Quite literally, I never had a single issue with the Manfrotto monopod from that point forward -- smooth as silk. As for your comment about having to tighten or adjust the Manfrotto, I've NEVER had to do that, so maybe you got defective product? The low feature on the iFootage Cobra 2 is cool though.

How about using it for still photography? That's how I found your channel, by just searching "photograph monopod". I do very little video. What I want is a light-weight support for my rig - a 150-600mm telephoto on my Canon.

I wish you could have told us which version of the Ifootage monopod this is.

For old school ball heads, I've seen some good reviews of Acratech's stuff (Thomas Heaton loves his), and their "GP" model popped up as top choice in DPReview a several years back (maybe an updated comparison would make for a good video). For newer school, maybe try using instead something like a Zhiyun or DJI gimbal (also potentially making for another good comparison video).

Any thoughts about this for photography? It looks like it could be useful for high MP cameras when you don’t want to use a tripod.

wildlife - use heads like the "Genesis MH-10". you can loosen it with your left thumb while suporting the camera.

Is there a reason this is a "video monopod"? Is there any drawback using it for still photography?

Not sure that beats my excellent MogoPod by much. It's alright. Where did I get it? At the Camera Store, from you! (instead of a Pen-F, ;-)

Even if you don't need a monopod, the Cobra base by itself makes for an awesome, extremely sturdy and useful little tripod

Aaaaah! Someone else loves monopods! They can very adequately take the place of a tripod and gimbal. Presently shooting with a Sirui ($40 used on Reverb) and a surprisingly good Chinese almost-all-plastic video head ($30). Sold all my Canon gear and got an ultralight camera, the 12 Pro Max. I have no faith in the notion that things can make us happy, but this comes close.

One might say that Gerald undid your expectations of what a monopod could do.

If you haven't tried the 'Manfrotto Befree 3-Way Live Tripod Head...you should. It may not look like much but it is very smooth and provides full usability shooting vertical meaning for a photo/video monopod head it is so perfect. Folded, it is nearly as narrow as the monopod. The third axis allows you to tilt, pan, and rotate all at the sometime while pushing-in (leaning forward) on a monopod = interesting motion. Additionally, the third axis allows you to lean the monopod left and right while keeping the camera level = slider effect. If you have tried it and didn't like it... alright then. Cheers!

Actually you guys should make a full series on tripod/monopod heads and get it sponsored by iFootage or something. "The hunt for the best fluid head" or something.

Tutorial: MF mastery. Got my first 35mm to feel pro and have realized that what looks in focus in evf does not always be it. Is it necessary to shoot around a desired focal point at low fstops?
The old a7 with kit lens "highlighted areas" is very rudimentary in what it highlights.
Even worse are that photos are darker or much lighter than what they looked in camera. User error must be eliminated

Have you found a video head yet? Gerald did a video on fluid heads & I think the iFootage was his pick there as well.
