Unfortunately, someone gave you some erroneous information. The explanations for candela and throw were wrong and will cause people confusion.
What you were calling candela was the hotspot. What you were calling throw was the spill (the floodiness).
The hotspot is the strongest concentration of the beam and will be the brightest part that you’ll see.
Candela is the intensity of light in one direction whereas lumens simply measures the total visible light (collective from all directions).
Throw is how far the light will be impactful at a distance. Like how far you can throw a ball. How far the emitter throws the light.
This is why I find the x300 far more useful as a weaponlight versus the turbo. The ultra is more floody, so I can see a much wider area without moving the gun side to side and I hope to never see a need to shoot exceptionally long distances with a handgun, at night, so I don’t need the long distance throw of the turbo. The ultra will help you properly identify a target at 100 yards, I doubt anyone will ever encounter a situation that requires more distance on a handgun at night.
You want the best balance between flood and throw. Enough throw to exceed your expected range and enough flood to properly survey the area close to you. Notice how dimly lit the hallway was with the x300 turbo. All you could see was that 16” circle on the far wall and couldn’t see much of the hall walls or most importantly the doorways.

The main point of the Turbo was the disorientation effect you get from being flashed. Higher candela = stronger disorientation effect. Thats why the Turbo sacrifices lumens for more candela because there was a need for more candela and the competitors were starting to fill that need like the Modlite and Holosun PID HC. SureFire went all in and is currently king of candela dethroning both by a huuuuuge margin.

the fact that he shows how they each throw light, there's really not too much room for practical confusion, just terminology.

ive been messing around with cheap internet lights, most are junk, i have one that for some reason has lasted a few thousand rounds and mostly still works and almost holds zero, for 30 bucks wow! and i have a box full of stuff that didnt last at all, or was faulty on delivery. 1 out of 10 cheap light/lasers might kinda work for a short time, i would pay 3000 dollars for a light that can be 100% reliable, but thats not possible.

    Things to be aware of:
    1. Really high candela throws a lot of light back at you when clearing small rooms. For an apartment-dweller's "home gun", be aware of this.
    2. Warmer color temperatures cut through moisture much better. Colder/blue illumination causes much more refraction/bounce back... And "neutral color temps (4000~5000k) give the most accurate color rendering for PID.

As you slop with the A, 1 you have to use the correct plate for QD, Glock or 1911, and they make an adjustable shim that comes with it and works great for the poor pic rail forming done by manufacturers.

I love the x300 U over the turbo due to room clearing. I didn’t realize how much until I kind of accidentally switched guns when I was practicing searching my house. The turbo had a lot of reflection off of my walls and severely washed out my dot when compared. I like it’s tough switches so I don’t have alight AD. Personally the switches are the ONLY thing I don’t like about the tlr1, and I HATE them. If streamlight found a way to put tlr7a ( my other favorite light) switches on the tlr1 I would switch in a heart beat.

X300 Turbos are the best in class. If they had detachable heads that were compatible with their rifle scout WMLs like Modlite, they'd be perfect. I'd like the choice of 18350s as Surefire is pretty much at the absolute maximum that CR123s can produce. Streamlights TLR1-HLs are like $150-$180 and X300 Turbos are $230 everyday on the right website. I'm choosing X300 Turbos for American made, class leading candela and holster compatibility for the extra $50-$70.

  • @rondobrondo
    @rondobrondo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

"If you're within five yards, your throw is going to be very small"
That's not throw. You're talking about the SureFire Turbo lacking FLOOD and SPILL.
Also, it's a pretty ridiculous myth when people say that "If you have a really high candela light with a beam that's only like ahhhhh 50-70% the size of one of these competitors' options, then that means all my light is gonna get thrown too far and then I won't have enough light to smoke out the boogeymen hiding who are all spread out and hiding behind random cars in the parking lot, and if I don't have enough flood then how am I gonna see them!??!?! I should just get the light with worse output and performance because I'm afraid that muh FOV will be ruined :'/ "
This is a bunch of BS. There are no practical downsides to running something like a surefire X300 Turbo or the new Scout Turbo just because they have high candela RATINGS (btw, Candela is not the width of the hotspot. Candela is a unit-measure for LIGHT. Candela is the SI unit of luminous intensity. One candela is the luminous intensity, in a given direction, of a source that emits monochromatic radiation of frequency 540 × 1012 Hz and that has a radiant intensity in that direction of 1/683 watt per steradia)
Anyway, these lights like the newest surefire and the Cloud lights put out plenty of spill and flood to be usable. And if you really want flood that bad, then just put a flood diffuser cap on your life. You can get a spring loaded one like scope caps, and then you'' have a lil diffuser lens in there that makes your super high candela and super high lux flashlight into a great floodlight.
You can always turn candela into flood, but you can't easily turn flood into candela. You should always get as much lux and candela as possible without becoming a liability to yourself or others, and honestly you really don't even necessarily want super high lumen counts. You don't wanna btfo all your immediate surroundings right in front of your light, which makes it way harder for you to see the light that is hitting your target, because most of it is hitting the stuff right in front of you and now you are using your own light like a photonic barrier against yourself.

I am a big flashlight nerd ... people are sleeping on Fenix flashlights. Their GL lineup is another good quality option for pistols.
When it comes to torchs 🔦, I gave away all my Olight's, Streamlights (except my TLR-1). Fenix and Nitecore are excellent options when it comes to lighting.
Why would people purchase a $350+ light that is only 1k lumens with low quality candela?! Waste of money if you ask me ...

Lights mounted on a firearm is awesome….. the suspect won’t see you coming first. a light will never give away your position and the best thing about a mounted light is, the suspect can never tell which way the muzzle of your firearm it pointed and won’t give them the advantage over your life. it is the perfect way to avoid getting your sh!t knocked back in the middle of the night…lights on a firearm is awesome …. The brighter and more expensive the better…. Always listen to your gunshop sales person.
