    Having this part any earlier would be (in my opinion) detrimental to the story. It's not Ellie's story (at least not until episode 5 or 6), it's Joel's. We get how he feels about Ellie being a brat, a burden he has to carry and gradually opening up to her better because he doesn't have her backstory. I think that if we had this episode earlier, the whole story would need to be built a different way to make it work for the viewer.
    Ellie being a brat and us not liking her is part of it. We gradually start to like her more and more because she's a breath of fresh air in a gloomy world. This part is not needed and that's the reason it was not put in the original game at first.
    So, nope I don't agree, this right here is perfect. She already left someone behind and she won't make that mistake again. That's what this episode tells us.

    • @Istr
      @Istr ปีที่แล้ว +8

      THIS. Jeezus, thank you. Restructuring it by putting it earlier would have totally ruined the story this series (and game) is telling. Just like the game, it's letting you feel what the characters feel, even when you're not in their shoes by playing it. Like you say, you're not really supposed to like Ellie from the beginning since Joel doesn't. And then you learn about her sense of humour. And then about her past and her loyalty.
      To me, Left Behind was always the best part of the franchise, and they turned it into one of the best parts of the series.

      I think since the story was technically added on after the initial release, it makes sense to have it near the end, but it would be weird to conclude there, as opposed to where the story of the game ends.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markfarmer7534 It isn't weird to conclude it fit exactly here if you are considering the game. The DLC is split between present day and flashback and the present day part is exactly at where the story is at the moment, it is Ellie trying to find medicine so she can heal and patch up Joel.

    I think alot of this also has to do with the show NOT being very plot driven, but being VERY character driven instead. Info about our characters IS the plot. Their relationship is the plot. etc.
    It IS a backstory episode, but it's highlighting a point ellie made in the previous episode. Everyone that has cared for her has left her or died, and she's not going to willingly participate in that hereself. She isn't going to allow someone else to give up on or die on her like that if she can help it. Not again.

  • @petrinafilip96

    This pacing was very much intentional. This episode shows us how Ellie already left someone behind once and shes not going to do it again.

    I don't think it's fair to say this episode or episode 3 didn't advance the plot at all because they did. They advanced the internal plot of the characters for the audience. Joel and Ellie have an external journey as the move through the world, with the world its self being the primary antagonist. But at the same time they have an internal journey moving toward each other, with themselves as their own primary antagonists. Episode 3 used other characters to display to the audience and act as a catalyst in universe for Joel's internal plot to move forward. This episode is focused on Ellie's internal journey toward Joel. Where we saw the beginning of his with Ep 3, we're getting the end of her's with this episode since her connection to him is really cemented by her decision to stay. The flashback we see is meant to demonstrate her internal struggle on whether to go to Tommy's like Joel says, or stay with him and keep fighting for him. It all takes place in that couple of seconds she hesitates on the stairs. I feel like people conflate the plot moving forward with the external journey through the world quite often in criticism for the show.
    That being said, I do think they could have structured this episode better. I don't think they should have changed where it is in the story, but instead I think they should have changed how they interspersed the present day stuff. They shouldn't have used Ellie patching up Joel as book ends for the episode like they did. I feel like it would have worked far better to interweave the beginning of the Winter chapter with Ellie hunting on her own, the mystery of if Joel survived, and it being slowly revealed as she meets David and asked for medicine, and finally confirmed at the end when she returns to Joel. This also would have given David more development time as a secondary antagonist.
    With probably 20 minutes of extra run time they could have done it without cutting any of the mall scenes. Start out in the present with Ellie tracking the deer up until she fires on it. From there cut to the flash back up until Ellie confronting Riley and storming off. Then you cut back to David and Buddy Boy coming across the deer, and Ellie confronting them (use this as a more mysterious introduction so we don't know if they're really from a community and skip the funeral scene and let it stay in Ep. 8. Plus it makes a better reveal about their connection to Joel and Ellie). Ellie panickly asking for medicine and David sending Buddy Boy off (inferring Joel is alive but struggling) seqways into Ellie in the hallway of the mall, choosing to go back to Riley, and up until Riley shoots at the infected. Then we cut back to David's "everything happens for a reason" speech that reveals that they want Joel (the flashback here also helps better show the amount of time that passed compared to how the show has it), Ellie has the confrontation, gets the medicine, and escapes with the lingering implications they're going to track her to where she's hiding with Joel. That transitions to the mall fight with the infected up until Ellie discovers they were bit (ties into everything happens for a reason speech). Then the last scene is interwoven between Riley's "Lose our minds together" speech and Ellie checking on Joel's wound and giving him the medication. Then we end Ep. 7 on the shot of Ellie laying next to Joel with her hand on his chest like we see in Ep 8.
    I think that would help the pacing feel better and moves both the external and internal journey forward instead of just the internal.

    @Durantis ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Only when the story is done you can say what the plot was. Ep 3 and 7 do not advance the 'save the world' trope, but in context of the final episode it really does advance the real plot.

    For me, the placement of this flashback at this point is good enough. For example, I prefer not to know why she full of hate kills an immobilised infected with a knife to the head. It’s very funny because I was entirely enjoying this episode and didn’t have any problems so it was funny to see you oppose it so vehemently XD but I can totally see where you’re coming from and respect your feelings, esp as an author. I didn’t realize when I watched it but there are definitely ways they could’ve threading in these moments (no pun intended Joel lol) that could’ve been worse or more affective, I’m happy with what we got because this is the best they could give us and it doesn’t feel half assed you know? Many ppl have various complaints about this show but as a total noobie to this series I’m just happy that they put so much love into this and were earnest all the way through. Since you've already watched episode 8, I'll mention that this part wasn't originally in the story. It went right from Joel falling off the horse to Ellie hunting, and you didn't know if Joel was still alive until Ellie asks David for medicine.
    I beat the game three times before I ever played the DLC and the story flowed just fine without it.

    the point of this episode is to show ellie's first loss. when it parallels back to her and joel in the house, it shows her eagerness to save him and not lose another person she loves. she wasn't gonna let riley happen all over again. it shows how she gets bit, we learn that she most likely had to kill her best friend/first love, and it shows her backstory. i don't see how you could think it doesn't add to the story. i know you didn't care for the ep, but we didn't need a whole episode on her fixing joel. also the place this episode is in makes perfect sense because in episode 6 she says everyone she's cared about has died or left her, then in episode 7 we see that first person she loses AND how it relates to her feelings towards joel. i hope i don't come across as rude or anything but i just wanted to say this.

    Left Behind it's actually a DLC (downloadable contet) release after the game, where the Riley story and Ellie trying find medicine for Joel it's mixed.
    There's a lot gameplay in the mall, with the infected, when she try to find something for Joel, but the series cut that part (for obvious reasons).

  • @DomSithe
    @DomSithe ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you! I've been taking so much flack for having the same reaction to this episode as you. I probably would have cut this episode right out of the season completely instead of trying to force it into a different spot, but I also agree that if the show had done the 1-7-2 episode content cut wise, that would have made this section hit better. It's not that this episode is bad, its that its just mostly not needed for the plot or even directly for characterization.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not forced into a different spot. This is exactly where the DLC takes place. Remember that there is a present day part to the DLC where Ellie is looking for medicine for Joel? A valid complaint would be that the show doesn't connect these two events as much as the game (both scenarios takes place at a mall), but this is where the DLC took place in the game.
      As for 1-7-2. That would be a stupid idea. The story isn't about Ellie, nor Joel for that matter, but the relationship between them. We feel the relationship build along with the characters and in the beginning Ellie is just cargo, so we shouldn't know her backstory at that point, because it rubs us from warming up to her alongside Joel.

    I think these one-off episodes would sting less if the show was longer. With only 9 episodes though, I don’t feel there’s enough time between Joel and Ellie. I also feel like Ellie is significantly less affable in the show compared to the game, almost to a retcon degree, because they probably weren’t confident enough at portraying her acts of violence. Which I don’t get. Likable people can commit just as much violence. If anything the contrast of both being likable and violent worked in her characters favor.

  • @LizardChase
    @LizardChase ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video and reaction as always. I see where you are coming from in terms of wanting to have seen this back story earlier in the season. It works for because I like it and I think the reason the show runners has this here for several reason. Originally this back story is something we got as extra content after the game's release in the form of the Left Behind DLC.
    Also it is a good comparison for the two most important relationships for Ellie. Joel being her guardian/father figure and Riley her best friend/love interest.
    It is also juxtaposes the two worst times in Ellie's life, with Joel being critically injured and her and Riley getting bit. With her and Riley getting bit and the acceptance of that situation and now with her not giving up and wanting to fight to keep Joel alive.
    The main mental condition that both Joel and Ellie suffer from is Survivor's Guilt. That's why the show is called The Last of Us and this part of the game and this episode is called Left Behind.
    Ellie also suffered from the Guilt of out living Riley and being immune, which is something that should be a blessing but instead is a curse. Which is also why Ellie wants there to be a cure so all the pain she has suffered can at least mean something and be for some form of good.
    If something would to happen to Joel because she did not try and stay it would only compound that Survivors Guilt even further.
    I do totally agree with you, normally this plot point is something I would have like to have seen earlier, but I think it fits well here.
    Keep up the awesome work!

It's hard to convert a game to live action without all of the gameplay because it acts as a filler in the game's story. I don't know how they could've done it better. the flashback was really sloppy. it takes too long to tie back to the present story. I love ep.3 because the flashback had a good relevant transition but also I can imagine Joel is telling Ellie about Bill and Frank during their 5 hour hike. we as the viewer just get a more detailed backstory.
    I don't hate the story in this episode. I just think it doesn't fit. I almost feel they should've opened with Ellie killing Riley with no context, then intro and joel stuff, and finally cut to the flashback. so we at least understand why she doesn't want to leave Joel right from the start and then add more context with the flashback. I don't know, dlc was never meant to be part of the original game and that's what it feels like here.

    I don't want to spoil how the DLC goes for you, but I feel like it was paced better than this episode and they cut out more than half of it. Overall while I really like the show, I think it feels rushed. A lot of the interactions that build our attachment to the characters take place during gameplay sections and when you cut all of that out... you get a series of episodes that feel disconnected. Every time you sit down you get introduced to some characters and more often than not they get killed off in less than an hour. In the game you generally spend more time with the various side characters and it feels more organic.
    This DLC is generally played separately from the main story, but in the game I think it actually fits well enough to stop in the middle of the main game and switch to the DLC and play it where it takes place chronologically.

    I felt similarly to you at first. I was rather annoyed that we got to see Joel and her and then it took us to a completely unrelated story. Or so I thought. From what I understand, this was the DLC for the first game, and it does explain how Ellie got bit. HOWEVER, it is also aptly titled "Left Behind." Like she told Joel two episodes ago, everyone she's ever cared about has either abandoned her or died. This episode, while placed to annoy the audience and keep us waiting, shows us the first and worst time she left someone behind her. It also blends the ending of that event with the current event as if to tell you that she's not about to leave Joel behind.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion ปีที่แล้ว

      I find it quite weird how many people that are interpreting the title as Ellie leaving people behind and not the other way around. I mean you even quoted her yourself: "people have either left me or died". She also later ask when it is her turn [to die]. She is the one that is still here, so she is the one being left behind.
      Her survivor guilt is a major part of her character and she is scared of abandonment. She acts out of both conviction and fear. It is not that she wouldn't abandon Joel, it's that she would do anything not to be abandoned again.
