  • Luka Doncic & the Mavericks just lost NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. And once again, in the most crucial moment of the series - Game 3 in Dallas - the Slovenian's performance was heavily influenced by his frustration with the referees. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas analyzes how this same problem has shown up in every high-stake game that Luka had in the last 3 years: Tokyo Olympics in 2021, EuroBasket 2022, World Cup 2023, and now in NBA Finals. Will & can Luka change his attitude in order to win more?

Genuine q: given how out of shape Luka is, how little he tries on defense, how little he moves off-ball on offense, and how much he complains to refs, would he find it harder now in EuroLeague than as an 18 year old? He is a better player now in many ways, but it seems like these are traits that get indulged more in the NBA than would be in EuroLeague, especially since Dallas, unlike Real Madrid, is delighted just to be competitive in the post-season rather than aiming at being serial winners.

Luka my fav player in the NBA atm. They call him Luka Magic for a reason after all. Now, on the point that the video is trying to make, I strongly believe part of his frustration/ antics on the floor is due to lack of stamina/ physical conditioning. I believe that often times physical fatigue leads him to mental fatigue and mental fatigue leads him to behave like that on the court. As weird and uncoventional as it might sound, I think working on his body and his on-court endurance will help him in many, many ways including with his focus during the game and thus fixing in a big way the issue with his behavior also.

As a Luka fan, I agree - it's absolutely imperative for him to change his attitude. He shows signs of immaturity letting down himself first at the end of the day. He has a bad habit, and it takes time to get rid of a habit. Ppl forget that many great players had attitude problems, and became champs when they fixed them. Hakeem the Dream, for example. His immense talent has pampered him a bit. He's not the sole reason the Mavs lost, by any means - but those are the holes in his game he has to work on. You got a sub on this one! :) Good work!

The problem is his consistency on defense. He can play defense and choose not to do it sometimes. He seriously needs to be consistent and focus on getting back on defense instead of complaining. I don't think them getting to finals is a fluke. Another year will add up to the experience of the team they have to revise their playbook and improve some players(given they have limited moves on signing players this post season and years to come). And instead of moving players I think they should focus more on adding to their arsenal no just catching lobs. Spot on. Discussing with the referees does not lead to revert a decision by them. Referees have to decide a lot during a game - several decisions per position (defensive or offensive fool on or off the ball, 3 point violations, 5 seconds, 8 seconds, out of bounds, goal tending). This results in several hundreds decision to be made per referee per game and of course they will occasionally make mistakes. But a referee has to move on. They are lost if they start to negotiate with players.
An of course, if referees are bought, make the money gesture plays right into their hands. That's an easy technical foul to be whistled.

This was an excellent video depicting the strengths and weaknesses of an NBA player. Luka is a generational talent who comes along once every so often. On the offensive side of the ball, he is simply unguardable one on one. In saying that, if Luka wants to be one of the all-time greats of the game. He does have to improve on the defensive side of the ball. Going through the comments, a few fans are calling you out for criticizing Luka's defense which is simply absurb. Just because a player has a chance to be an all-time great doesn't mean he is there yet. A great player will want to improve each and every year to get to the next level. Even Michael Jordan improved on one aspect of his game every season until he became the GOAT. You can always continue to strive and improve if you want to be the best. Luka's blockage to greatness is on the defensive side of the ball. It has nothing to do with his lack of talent. Playing defense is a matter of effort, hustle, and a willingness to play defense to help your team win. I get Luka carrying a huge load offensively and he does get fatigued towards end of games. He does need to improve on his conditioning and diet if he wants to get better next season. It is totally up to him and he can do if he is willing to make the sacrifices to be a decent defensive player. Also the constant complaining to the refs has to stopped so he can focus on the next play. Again, it is fixable if he's willing to focus on doing the right things to better his play for his team to win a championship. He is only 25 years old and he does have a chance to be an all-time great. Don't be another Shaquille O'Neal who didn't maximize his potential as an NBA player because he was too distracted with his lifestyle. Even he said that, he wished he would of kept his physical peak condition and be more dominant than he already was. Regrets are something you don't want to live with. Live in the moment and better yourself to be the best that you can be.

Can you imagine Luka in the 80s and 90s? What about that crying diva playing against the Bad Boys Detroit. Straight to the hospital for dehydration, too many tears coming out from his eyes. Although nobody mentions that, his attitude must be a chemistry killer in his team. Furthermore, That guy shows no intention to improve. Like I´m the start, I am allowed to complain, play no defense, and no training because He doesn´t look fit for being an NBA player. Please look at Jokic what a player he is, and he is not that athletic, but his behavior, and the way he makes his teammates better, elevates him. Luka is a far less likable Harden, with some Alen Iverson way of thinking. We´re talkin´bout practice ma. PS: Another important point here, please give credit to Boston, they were far better than the Mavs.

Just a week ago JT was not a champion. And he is also complaining a lot! Teams mostly scores on mistakes of other teams (players), so to show, how Luka's bad temper mistakes lead to Boston scoring is not realy convincing... if they did't does that make his behaviour great defance (tactic)? One could make a claim that Luka's temper is what makes him one of the best players. Taking away that, could make him Ben Simmons... Imagine L. James acting like J. Brunson. You're not wrong. But you're soooo out of context. Luka is magic, Dallas was unbelievable this year and even though they were blown out by the Celtics (that is a fucking super team), they still did great stuff all year and during the playoffs. Complaining and lazy defensive plays do not determine the level of leadership and especially when we approach it right after a loss in the finals. Was Luka a great leader in the previous series? Or the one before that? Or the year with the game 7 against the Suns? I understand that making a video dissing Luka is a great way to get our attention, but let's be realistic. We can't be using these phrases in the same sentence: ''Potentially one of the GOAT'S" and "Worst Leader in Basketball".

Luka's attitude is not the problem, that is what makes him magic, but of course when things go south the same skill fires back.
    The real problems are:
    1. conditioning
    2. eliocentric system (same problem Lebron had whole career)
If you have an offensive system not based on one player, your role players can deliver independently, your star can consume less energy, work more on defense and finally complain less.
My solution to Luka is either J Kidd develops something like warriors, triangle, princeton, swing, or Luka gets gym rat badge and comes back with enough stamina to play till Finals at max level

But Luka has been the best Mavs player in the finals by far, despite his defense in games 1-3, and all the complaining. It's sad because he can be the greatest. Although, in game 5 he didn't complained, he played defense, but the team was straight awful in defense and bad on offense except for Green. Even the best version of Luka wouldn't have win this finals because the rest of the team was pretty bad, and the Celtics are too good.
