After playing around with the config files in the pc version, it turns out that the more saturated look is the result of the team removing the depth of field filter on the original to make the city background look more sharp. That blurred filter also gave the game its more bluish tint. I guess after making the game look clearer, they decided not to reset the color palette to look more like the older version.
The scene with catwoman and the fresh carpets are NOT new. Those carpets are a signature part of the "PhysX" graphics option. When enabled, those rubs are all over the place and fly around during the fight.
The remaster dropped as low as 19 during their dedicated performance test video. And it's not like the graphics on PC are BAD. They still look fine. More than fine enough to win the comparison overall. A solid 60 FPS at all times for $5 or an unlocked framerate that rarely touches 60 and drops below 20 for a lot more money. I'll take the PC version every time, gameplay trumps graphics and the price is definitely right as well.
I'm a game artists who works primarily in UE4, although I appreciate the ambition the team had for the remaster I do think it was misguided. Unless they had planned on creating new materials for every object and character in the game simply porting most of the assets to a new engine will not add very much and (as I think is self evident by the footage) actually results in slightly worse looking assets. UE4 uses a PBR system for its materials, this results in materials looking much more realistic when the extra effort is applied to take advantage of this system (this is why the elements they did enhance comparatively look 'better'), however without using it (PBR materials) assets will look the same as they did on UDK. On top of this the lighting although similar to UDK is far more complex in UE4, and the subtle differences we see between the lighting in the two versions is created because of this subtle difference. Simply put porting a UDK game onto UE4 is not automatically going to improve anything, I personally think they lost a lot of the atmosphere of the original and the little you gain (the occasional specular highlight, higher res texture or upgraded material) is not worth the overall composition of each scene being degraded in terms of its aesthetic and atmosphere. To describe what I mean, the original has a dark blue tint, dark shadows and bright colorful lights. The remaster has a more washed out green look, it totally changes the mood of the game and I think it does so negatively. On top of that the shadows seem more blurry in the new version and are outright missing from several scenes. One final point I'll make, Batman Arkham Knight looks better than both versions of this game hands down, and it is running not on UE4 but UDK, it shows that a new engine isnt always the best solution for making a game look better, highly skilled game and technical artists make make almost any limitation look good if not great if given the time necessary to do so. I wish they had given this team years to remaster these games and do the originals justice, totally remaking every material if possible, then the shift to UE4 would at least be justified, as it stands its a mixed bag and it's very sad to see such great games get this as their remaster. I would've preferred a port with 1080p 60fps output that stayed as identical to the original as possible. Those are just my thoughts on this remaster anyways.
I like some of the changes, but the fact that it's 30 fps while the PC version can be ran at well above 60 at max with physx on a modern gaming PC is a deal breaker.

Why they felt the need to change anything at all is beyond me. We didn't need these sorts of "enhancements" for the God of War, MGS, or Team ICO collections last-gen - why do we need them now? We know the games are old, we know they won't stack up to newer games in terms of graphics, and we don't care. All the changes do is make it look slightly prettier while killing the performance and changing the original intent of the developers. Who would want this? Why would WB spend more money hiring this new team to "upgrade" the games when it would be much cheaper to just port the PC version to PS4 and XO, which would undoubtedly run better and look exactly like the original version? Fans would be happy the games were untouched, non-fans would appreciate the smoother performance, and WB would have higher profits due to the decreased costs. Everybody would be happy.
Sean Barker Well, first they aren't the original creators, secondly this can be related to the hardware archtecture of the consoles being an AMD, so as the game was an Nvidia game, some features like gameworks and other dirty things maybe could not be implemented on the console or they were simply too hard for the consoles to run.
German Lehmann We already got a remaster. Came out in 2011. Graphics were unchanged from the original PS2 version, it just ran at 60fps. No one had a problem with it, because we all knew it was a PS2 game from 2004 and it would look like that.
Marcelo Tezza I know they aren't the original creators. That's the point. They're changing stuff that Rocksteady put in for a reason, which I would argue they don't have the right to do. Arkham City is a work of art; art should not be changed after it is released, certainly not by people who had nothing to do with it. As for the Nvidia stuff, if you can't find a way around it on the hardware, then don't include it. That would be fine. Hell, it would probably just mean better performance.
This is an AMAZING VIDEO!! Many people do these comparisons but never, ever, ever go into detail about what exactly the differences are. I can only hope that you go on to make more comparison videos. Well Done!!
+The Deadly Gamers Nvm, it's fixed now. The problem was in Windows 10, it needed an upgrade, but I heard some people still having performance issues with it even on good rigs.
So the remaster has much better materials, and some of the lighting is pretty well improved. It also has warmer and more saturated colors, though I don't like the warmness myself. I also think the bloom effects on the remaster need to be dialed back a bit. I don't care much for the artistic redesign, but for the most part is a slight improvement, most notably in clothing materials.
CodeNameZ sorry XB1/PS4 and partially X360/PS3 all are 30fps but 360/PS3 don't suffer from shit graphics tweaks. PC wins cause 60 and honestly looks better.
When you compare beginning scene with catwoman, you pointed out that there are no carpets in pc version. That is not true. You have to turn physx effects on and then they even have cloth effect.
PC wins imo, because textures and lighting are a draw, both have good and bad scenes. Framerate & resolution PC clearly wins. Anti-Aliasing is really bad on Ps4, PC is miles ahead. So overall, PC is still better, especially if you have a monitor/TV with 1440p+.
I’ve always wanted to start playing these games. But man, this “remaster”, while a technical improvement, deviates way too much from the original ART DESIGN (capping it for emphasis, not yelling). Were the original artists / developers on board with this when the Remaster team revisioned this? Or was this just studio interference, forcing them to make this game look as different as possible for the sake of a “remaster contrast”? A remaster for me is mostly about retaining what was original maintained, albeit a few modifications that don’t detract too much from what was there. But this often gets lost in translation in many other mediums, such as movies, not just video games.
One thing that got botched in the remaster was the game over screen for Scarecrow, specifically where he teleports in the darkness. In the original, his eyes would turn off when he teleported, making it surreal and creepy. In the remaster, you see glowing eyes at all times, which ruins the immersion of the scene.
Really, it not being 60fps should be a dealbreaker. I recently just beat Arkham City on my PC at max settings 60fps, and boy does it look really pretty, *especially* at 60fps. Does the PS4/Xbox One have any of the nvidia physx stuff as well? Because it was so awesome playing as catwoman and flipping around in the vault with all the money flying around, or the part where Penguin fires the freeze gun. At max physx settings, it was pretty cool.
I like Catwoman's face in the remaster, but I miss her suite from the first on. They gave her a more silkey texture with the new one, where the original was more fiber textured. First one was definitely a better rendition in my opinion.
Personally I liked her suit a little bit more in certain aspects on the remastered version, it looked more shiny and latex than the original. It showed off the curves of her body better, also with it being more detailed. As for her face, I like the original more as the remastered version looked more yellowish and less cold and natural.
4:03 its clear that the Remaster Version is overall an upgrade in graphics. I played the remastered version on PS5 and later this year the original PC version. And I was missing the visuals in the remaster version at some point while playing the PC version.
The outdoor sections seem to be absolutely stunning - the soft light effect from the helicopter search light is a clear example of the step up. The rest, however, seem like useless tweaks. The close-up details in the game were always pretty bad, and this port seems to keep the trend going. An upgraded PC version would make for nice screenshots, but I don't see the point of re-releasing games that were already in HD in the first place...
The clothing textures are better in the remaster whilst everything else is better in the original. The darker lighting and realistic looking character models set a nice tone for the game.
I think everything pointed out as missing in the remaster is likely due to this being on console. I'm assuming the PC remaster, if it ever gets released, will have the missing light shafts and depth of field effects.
Anybody else notice batman's cape is slightly off center when gliding in the remaster? In the original his feet line up with the bottom of the Cape and now the feet are slightly to the left
The PC version is running @1080p. The PS4 pro version is running @4k. The PC version on your video is not at max settings since the carpets are missing. Carpets should be there at very high settings with Physx turned high. I also noticed that tessellation is off on your PC version as the ice scattered at the front of the courthouse are not popping out. What you've use may very well be just medium settings of PC version, not Max.
To me, the biggest drawback is the missing Batman silhoette. There were times in the original that Batman would be totally in shadow, in a very mistyreous way, just like the cartoon. This is completely gone and i miss that great contrast.
It would be nice to get a comparison with phys on high. The rug appears with phys enabled as well as more particles look up some videos and you will see what I mean.
Man , it sure stutters on the consoles . Makes me nauseous . I decided to revisit the game last night , full maxed out in 4k goodness at a locked 60 fps . Just beautiful ....
Would it of been that difficult for them to give console gamers the PC release running at 60fps and any extra resources available they can use to boost the graphics like textures, it seems like it's better in some areas but worse in others, overall I would say the PC version is still the best one.
***** Problem is that when I played the PC version maxed out at the time, it looks much better than the console version, it's still surprising that it matches up with the new console version in many ways, really for how old the game is, the console version should be 60fps with better visuals than the PC at max setting, for the PC version to still be the best version really shows that they've done a bad job with this remaster. Also eye candy sells well for console gamers as well, thats why publishers do bull shots and why these new consoles are on their way.
Paul Aiello You haven't seen the video. They clearly said that pc is dated as fuck. It's pretty pathetic they even put comparison with ps4 version. PC looks like outdated mess.
I don't see the point in enhancing the quality (one could really argue if they enhanced it) if it comes at the expense of sooo much lower fps. The same happened in Skyrim remaster. Though I must admit that the overall improvements are more than the few things lost in translation. Even though the weird faces Catwoman and Harley have now. Maybe it's just lighting but they look a little weird. Edit: I didn't realise at 1st but in another video they commented it and then it was so obvious... It's not exactly a redesign in Catwoman and Harley. It's that the overall game has someway a more yellow palette that in characters that fully show their faces like those 2 women it gives them a weird look. Other characters that don't show their full face it's less ovbious, like Batman (partial mask) or 2 Face.
I would choose the Xbox 1 version. Of course PS4 is overall nicer but that excessive bloom lights are too much. It's the problem with bloom lights: too much make things look wrong and too shiny and many times blurry thus irreal. None or too little bloom makes them too simple as that effect is seen in real life lights thus looks irreal too. PS4 is too much bloom PC original is too little or none of it. In Xb1 it has the perfect balance. It's the reason that I always turned it down in The Witcher 3, the bloom lights were too excessive. If at least there was a bar to control it...
why do Selina's eyes look like they're glowing?? Also her character model in remastered is horrid, it doesn't look like they added any texture to her face.. looks like a plastic doll
I don't like Catwoman's costume in the new version, it looks weird and they changed the materials. Also you can make the PC version look even better with sweetFX.
They basically removed the moody lighting which made the game look cool and updated some textures... I mean I guess it would be worth a buy when it's on sale for 5-10$? I'll stick to 4k 60fps with reshade.
I've been playing Return to Arkham City a lot lately, and I've found there are some textural issues on certain rooftops. Besides that, I think it's just under Asylum in terms of optimization and performance, but still gives us a really solid entry for a remaster.
Origins was a great game, nd i personally dont mind that they reused the environment and combat systems at all, I am a huge Yakuza series fan, and they reuse things wholesale between games. A remaster of Origins would have been a great opportunity to fic a lot of the issies from the original release, there is a very good game and story underneath the shit coding.
I would have preferred a 1080p60 release on PS4 with the original graphics intact. The upgrades they've made aren't especially compelling and definitely aren't worth sacrificing the framerate. After the mess 2K made of the Bioshock remasters it's disappointing to see another game where the original art style has been messed with.
The changed color grading is quite the turn-off for me. Also, the remaster seems to be a mixed bag overall, with some nice changes here or there and some confusing downgrades on the other hand. I don't get what's so hard about remastering a finished game that's already based on fairly modern tech.
3:20 The carpets are in the PC version, and they can be interacted with as well. Are you using an AMD card? Because with Nvidia cards, PhysX settings at the rugs and allow feet to move them.
The original still looks good on PC! It may not have "2016 Graphics" but the remaster isn't a drastic increase in graphic fidelity anyway, it's not like the Resident Evil 1 remake on the Game cube.
textures and lighting look better on the remaster but I prefer the more darker/mysterious looking original version
Marco Martins lol have you ever checked the settings well there a brightness setting and you can adjust it to make it darker or lighter.
"I have a PC, therefore, I'm going to be biased and say that PC looks better, even though PS4 Remaster clearly looks better" is not an argument.

The remaster doesn't look any less 'Mysterious'

Looks great but it changes the atmosphere, it doesn't feel like Gotham as much... too colorful. Just me? No?
The "extra details" missing in the PC were included with PhysX enabled.
Love how the remaster's running at barely 20 fps in most comparisons. lol
Sean Barker MGS 3 Snake Eater DEFINETELY needs a remaster, its a PS2 game...
Sean Barker I was talking about the remaster on the fox engine, the one Konami decided to release for Pachinko machines
Well Done!!
PC FTW looks better and 60fps makes it a big WIN on PC and you could pick them up for under $5 every few weeks when it comes down.
+The Deadly Gamers Nvm, it's fixed now. The problem was in Windows 10, it needed an upgrade, but I heard some people still having performance issues with it even on good rigs.
PC Master God.
wonder how the wii u version stacks up
So the remaster has much better materials, and some of the lighting is pretty well improved. It also has warmer and more saturated colors, though I don't like the warmness myself. I also think the bloom effects on the remaster need to be dialed back a bit. I don't care much for the artistic redesign, but for the most part is a slight improvement, most notably in clothing materials.
Would have rather a straight port of Asylum, City and Origins, rather than this 'remaster' of just two of them.
Origins wasn’t made by Rocksteady that is why it wasn’t included.
thtas sad cos i honestly enjoyed origins
strange, I feel like the Ps4 seems less fps than pc in this video
with drops to 20fps according to their peformance analysis video... so not even locked 30
What are "Next Gen consoles"? Those are old 2 years now.
Filip Petrović the game ran at a locked 30 fps on PS3 and 360, there is no way in hell the game should be dipping down to 10-15 frames per second.
There are no losers with this game.
Just got it on whatever you own no mather what it is, PS3, 360, X1, PS4, Wii U, MAC or even the PC
CodeNameZ Daisy!
There are losers. Ps4 and Xbox One users.
Mc Bon-bons How? They are still getting a great game + free DLC
sub 30fps = you lost
CodeNameZ sorry XB1/PS4 and partially X360/PS3 all are 30fps but 360/PS3 don't suffer from shit graphics tweaks. PC wins cause 60 and honestly looks better.
When you compare beginning scene with catwoman, you pointed out that there are no carpets in pc version. That is not true. You have to turn physx effects on and then they even have cloth effect.
pc still winner if u have not played pickup the game on its cheap too
PC wins imo, because textures and lighting are a draw, both have good and bad scenes. Framerate & resolution PC clearly wins. Anti-Aliasing is really bad on Ps4, PC is miles ahead.
So overall, PC is still better, especially if you have a monitor/TV with 1440p+.
PC wins because 60 fps.
Lets not forget, phyxs, PC wins
Jackseptic eye dude you're an console peasant who don't wanna accept the truth. LOL
'pc still winner'... if you are blind. Since pcucks are blind can't argue with you.
No words about Physx effects ?
But they could not present the same effect as physically present in physx with other technology?
***** So that mean what ? There is any equivalent ? or not at all?
Yeah, why wasn't mentioned in the comparison? I'm disappointed :/
1:08 Why is there light inside the closed safe in the remaster?
Turn up brightness.
Boom, remaster done.
8:30 - MISSING a 30fps-cap?... You meant 60?...
Why did you include comparison of the cutscenes on PS4 and XB1 if they're pre-rendered? :S
2:23 Batwoman???
Overall, the lighting puts the OG over the remakes. Everything looks more natural, especially around the eyes
Not a fan of the remaster. I rather replay the original
Is there still strategic butt covering in the remaster? The omission would clearly be a step up here.
I doubt the "remaster" version have PhysX features because it's Nvidia's tech, plus console CPU can't handle them.
To me, the biggest drawback is the missing Batman silhoette. There were times in the original that Batman would be totally in shadow, in a very mistyreous way, just like the cartoon. This is completely gone and i miss that great contrast.
"improved" lighting
It would be nice to get a comparison with phys on high. The rug appears with phys enabled as well as more particles look up some videos and you will see what I mean.
I like the look of the remaster better. I hop it makes it way on PC on day.
I'm sure mods exist for the game
0:53 Catwoman on PC looks so much better.
Man , it sure stutters on the consoles . Makes me nauseous . I decided to revisit the game last night , full maxed out in 4k goodness at a locked 60 fps . Just beautiful ....
u can run it on 8k but still aint gonna look good as ps4 version
+Patrik Miskovic The PC version looks more natural and better colors. The PS4 version is just more colored.
the carpet thing is in the PC version, enable physx, and it even moves as you walk over it,,,,i prefer the original
Would it of been that difficult for them to give console gamers the PC release running at 60fps and any extra resources available they can use to boost the graphics like textures, it seems like it's better in some areas but worse in others, overall I would say the PC version is still the best one.
NOBODY on console wants to deal with 2011 ps3 graphics (basically pc version).
eye candy is what sells for ignorant peasants. not performance/gameplay
***** but can run at 4K 60fps with whatever controller you want plus cheaper version. gameplay and resolution are kings
PS4 - 19fps its in the game!
why do Selina's eyes look like they're glowing?? Also her character model in remastered is horrid, it doesn't look like they added any texture to her face.. looks like a plastic doll
or you can just, you know, get a shader injector like sweetfx or reshade and a texture mod for free
I don't like Catwoman's costume in the new version, it looks weird and they changed the materials. Also you can make the PC version look even better with sweetFX.
We all know Catwoman looks good in any quality 😏
Damn right
They basically removed the moody lighting which made the game look cool and updated some textures... I mean I guess it would be worth a buy when it's on sale for 5-10$? I'll stick to 4k 60fps with reshade.
Feel like they've thrown away the artistic style that defined Arkham City. Just went straight for HD
I've been playing Return to Arkham City a lot lately, and I've found there are some textural issues on certain rooftops. Besides that, I think it's just under Asylum in terms of optimization and performance, but still gives us a really solid entry for a remaster.
So glad I skipped on this. Also sucks that they didn't include Arkham Origins.
Reminds me of the Gears remaster, the artistic design is all lost for the sake of making everything brighter.
in my opinion the original looks better
I would have preferred a 1080p60 release on PS4 with the original graphics intact. The upgrades they've made aren't especially compelling and definitely aren't worth sacrificing the framerate.
After the mess 2K made of the Bioshock remasters it's disappointing to see another game where the original art style has been messed with.
The changed color grading is quite the turn-off for me. Also, the remaster seems to be a mixed bag overall, with some nice changes here or there and some confusing downgrades on the other hand. I don't get what's so hard about remastering a finished game that's already based on fairly modern tech.
the one thing all these remasters are lacking is atmospheric lighting.bioshock was the biggest example
wtf I ran this game at 144 fps ez on my rig
lmao. pee cee musta race 👍
BUt TEH HUMOON EYYE CNA ONNLY SEe 24 FpS!?!?!
sOllOs and two forty pi
PC dick measuring contest
nintendokings k pesant
3:20 The carpets are in the PC version, and they can be interacted with as well. Are you using an AMD card? Because with Nvidia cards, PhysX settings at the rugs and allow feet to move them.
I think I'll stick to the PC version at 4K 60fps, or 1440p 144fps
1080 sli my friend, nothing imaginary.
You mean you will stick with outdated graphics. Come on. It's 2016 and some people want actual 2016 graphics.
The original still looks good on PC! It may not have "2016 Graphics" but the remaster isn't a drastic increase in graphic fidelity anyway, it's not like the Resident Evil 1 remake on the Game cube.
+Random User
I value framerate over graphics.
Lmao, less than 2% of pc players can play like that, you just play 1080p 60fps with your shite 800 pc 😂
