I see many ear mite meds for cats online. Amazon has good options. They are marketed for both dogs and cats.. They all seem to have the same active ingredients. And they are getting good reviews about how effective they get rid of the mites.
A few options also have aloe and/or lanolin to soothe ear. Apparently, ear mite med can be irritating to cat's ear.
Vets are always going to say "go to vet". But, there are situations where, imo, you can treat at home. This is one of them.

They're not tiny eight-legged creatures, they're sporozoites from the sporiferous, spore-congested air, which can also cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other illnesses in humans. It's mostly indoors.

Yes, I have a house hold of 9 cats. Alpha (the first cat ) was the first cat I had. But never scratch her ears much. But I always notice the coffee ground debree and brown blood the mites leave behind. We went to her doc and she hates the estimate med still give it to her. Shes on her 4th day. I cleaned her ears gently as much as the gunck was visually see able to get. The brand I'm using is Eradimite. You literally helped me out with my cat more than my vet. I will get bravecto and ask him to see if there is any 2ndary symptoms. I will also ask for the earmite brand just in case. My poor baby.

I bought a bottle of Pet Armor mite treatment drops because the price dropped to $1.50 a bottle. I used this for a few weeks and it greatly reduced the mites. My cat would shake his head and clumps would come flying out. But it wasn’t getting 100% of the “ coffee grounds” out. Q tips didn’t help much. So I put my cat in the shower (with a glass door closure and a hand sprayer). I gave him a shower with warm water and baby shampoo. I kept spraying in his ears. It was a gentle water pressure and he kept shaking his head and crying but after I turned off the water, there was no signs of mites. His ears were super clean and a cute pink inside. I towel dried him and let him lay in the sun to groom himself. He looks so clean and happy! I will keep giving him the drops to help prevent more mites.

Very informative. I was wondering if you recommend, or not.. Coconut Oil, Mineral Oil, or Olive Oil to treat ear mites in cats? There are several videos on youtube with people swearing by oil treatments.. Even saying that a once a week treatment for two weeks will do the trick. I have been using it for a week and a half, twice a day and cleaning the ears after each treatment.. there is less caca in the ears, but it is still there and kitty is still itching and shaking her head.

Honestly, I’m currently having a bad impression of vets because of the one I took my cat to. Basically I spent around $200 to treat ear mites in my cat’s ears and after three weeks I’m still battling the ear problems as she’s having an infection right now and partially killed the mites. The products prescribed by my vet not only were overpriced, but honestly they take time to fix the problems. For such a common problem in cats, this was way too expensive to treat. Btw, I’ve got a Sphynx cat.

    • @crapbag426

Exactly what I’m going through now! It’s cost me £500 to treat my cats ear mites problem but still only halfway there and 3 months in. I wanted her spayed but the vet is refusing till the mites have been treated and our household cannot cope with her being in heat every month. It’s depressing!

Try mineral oil, I've been using it for yrs on my cats. Apply with a q-tip wait an hour, wipe out the ear with clean q-tips and toilet paper or kleenex. Do all that again after 1or2 wks, and then maybe one more time 1or2 wks later.

It's a real racket. Imagine paying a vet bill to diagnose the obvious. Your cat scratches his neck around his ear like crazy, then treat for mites. I keep hearing absurd stories about people paying high vet bills for what is obvious. It's like the hyped up charges for rabies shots. Farmers used to give shots to their animals without all the hype. Caring for animals many times should be just common sense, not require a prescription.

@@Lotusbaby.3333 He's now all good, turned out it was an infection, apparently not ear mites, I've been treating him with ear mites treatments as well as taking him to the vet and he also was diagnosed with ear mites, but turned out the vet was wrong all that time; I took him to another vet and he told me it's an infection caused due to an allergy or something else, Tommy was actually born with a problem in his digestive system which also made me proceed him to surgery, furthermore, the vet prescribed me eye drops (they mainly are for human) but the formula in it helps to relieve the infection, and thankfully it did!! I really appreciate that loyal vet who helped my Tommy! But Tommy is still scratching himself excessively and so I had to put him a cone to prevent him from scratching himself, and apparently, he's so smart and knows how to remove it sometimes! Hi Angel! Sorry about the lack of response; I try to respond a few times a week but got a bit behind. Ear mites are parasites and live on animals, so they can't survive very long outside if they don't have a host. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that mites could get to your cat through the screen a couple feet from the ground. However, I would recommend you talking with a veterinarian about this. - Mallory

Whenever I scratch under my cat's chin (neck area), his back leg goes crazy with a scratching motion to the point where he almost falls over. I have researched this but have come up with nothing. I have decided that it must be his ears so I tried the MCT oil this morning in his ears and cleaned with textured makeup remover pads. Of course, I didn't get everything, but hope that doing this everyday for the next week will give him some relief. He is 20 and deserves to be pain free as much as possible. Any other advice?

Dr. Sara, thanks for being such a good teacher, straight forward and easy to understand. Yesterday while brushing my young cat, I noticed quite a few very tiny darks specs in his fur, just specs, so I thought they were just dirt from the garden. I looked closer and deeper, I found a few tiny, tiny LIVE bugs CRAWLING around on his back and tummy. I combed them out as much as possible. I checked his ears, didn't see anything unusual. What kind of mites they were? Different than ear mites? They were in his hair over his body. Itchy also. Please advise. Thanks.

My cat constantly has dark brown/ black debris in one ear.
My cats vet continues to state that for some reason unknown
my seems to produce an excessive amount of wax.
This is only occurs in the one ear. He is often scatching the ear & I do notice head shaking sometimes. The vet feels taking a swab is not necessary. What do you think?

I've been using Sronghold ( U.K.'S REVOLUTION-cheaper and no script needed, and they told me he could become immune to it now) for years and which just recently I think Boo either has ear mites or maybe a yeast infection which I am not able to differentiate as I am 70 years old, don't see well and am Handicapped and live in a assisted living home and don't drive. Also, does any of these home remedies work, like I've seen on another vet's TH-cam saying Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut oil or Baby OIl or Neem & Castor Oil mixture work? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi Sherry, unfortunately, Dr. Wooten isn't able to reply to the comments here, but Bravecto does not protect against heartworms or lice. Regarding oils to treat ear mites, they can help to get rid of the active infestation, but you will also want to treat any secondary infection as well.

I use Valley Vet Supply - SO MUCH CHEAPER than getting meds from the vet! (Especially if you are giving your cats fluids for kidney disease. You can get the fluid & needles.) Some medications require your vet to prescribe it and you have to have the vet forward the scrip to the company.

Could you please talk in a future video about allergies and how to narrow down what a cat might be allergic to?
This came about due to our cat getting recurring ear infections. Our vet recommended our cat go on a hydrolized protein diet but he wouldn't recommend one that has wet food, which she really likes. Also, can you talk about recognizing the signs of allergies to know what to look for after replacing her diet to know if it worked? Thanks!

I'm a little confused about my cat's case - he does have mites, but no symptoms. The build up is thicker and blotchy, not like coffee grounds, and he doesn't scratch/shake/lay his ears flat. His ears do get dirty very quickly (or they did, I'm 4 days into treatment) but there's no redness in his ears. I know they're there but he's not bothered by them at all. Both the vet and the groomer told me they're there (no official test done, the vet just looked) but it's like my cat doesn't know he has them! What's your opinion on Revolution Plus to treat mites?

Bravecto did not work. Used Revolution-advice from a cat shelter owner, which cleared it up. If the kitty is outdoors, you may need to use it every 3 weeks instead of every 4 weeks.
My vet, when taking in my other kitty for annual physical/immunizations, also confirmed the use of revolution as the best treatment.

You have to clean all the bedding, all the places your cats will go to, this means your own bedding if you let your cats on the bed. You have to clean the floors, mop tiles with bleach water, vacuum and use bug spray or some kind of spray on any carpeting, couches, anything you can't wash. You have to give them vet meds, drops in their ears for the prescribed treatment with cleaning out their ears. Then.....you have to give the cats a flea bath as the buggers can run from the ears on to the fur so once that is done, everything washed and sprayed and cleaned, you will be mite free.

    • @landofevolution9757

Mite med in ears works. Spraying poison all around is unnecessary poison in your environment. Bleach mixed with anything including urine and feces can create chlorine gas. I don't have any bleach in my home.

Excellent question! Yes, you can help to prevent an ear mite infestation from taking hold by regularly wiping your cat's ears out with either a commercially-available ear cleaner for cats or a couple of drops of baby or olive oil. Make sure to check his ears weekly and keep his bedding and the home clean.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's a really interesting question. I've never heard of anything quite like this, but if this behavior's onset coincided with the development of ear mites, I wouldn't rule out a connection. It's possible that a cat who's stressed out will exhibit more aggressive behavior.

I got a 6 month old kitten from a parking lot and had her spayed. They gave the ivermectin shot after surgery.while she was healing I kept her in my laundry room. Now I decided she was going to stay indoors.(I have two older indoor cats already) This baby had super dirty ears. The first couple days I kept finding black rocks!! Then I realized they were falling from her ears! I kept her separated for two weeks.I got a ear cleaner for cats online and took cotton to clean the ears every couple days. I even tried a over the counter ear mite drop cause I was afraid she still had mites! I was so concerned cause of the very large amount coming out of both her ears! The black stuff was super compacted. It's been 17 days since surgery and I introduced her to the other cats today.. They do not have any mites. Now I'm afraid since her ears aren't completely clean that she may give it to my other cats. Do you think the one ivermectin shot was enough? I do believe I will have to take her to the vet again to have her ears cleaned soon cause they are still terribly dirty. I just don't want my other cats to be infected and I don't want her to continue to be miserable.

I’d love to know about ringworm in cats and how to treat it. In particular a feral cat that I had TNR’d that I believe has ringworm. Problem is there is no way I can take it to Vet, since he is feral. I purchased an OTC anti fungal spray for cats but he freaks out when I try to use it 😩 poor guy had patches of missing hair over the last two winters and while his fur grows back (I’m thinking UV rays help decrease ringworm) he still itches a lot.

I see other vet doctors giving over the counter medicine tips because hey, better to help the patient then say oh no you only need a vet. Your video didn't help me at all. If your truly a good vet, you care about the animal not just your pocket book. Ill stick to the other vet dr video's and their over the counter. Hello was wondering if you can help. Middle of August what looked to be like a seizure from my Siamese cat who's 12 I took him to vet. He didn't have one again but now we are almost end of Sept. He had ear mites and now a ruptured ear drum. He came home from vet the 1st time after a week and wasn't stumbling or anything but he was walking with his head tilted. She gave me drops for ears but after 1.5 weeks it was bothering him too much in the ruptured ear so I stopped. I brought him back after 2 weeks cause top of his ears were bleeding and his hair started missing. I picked him up Friday. More antibiotics those these are pills. He came back really not being able to focus well. He stumbles and falls over if he's cleaning himself. Also she told me this time he was out for a short scope. My question is why after a month now all of a sudden he's acting like he's drunk alot. He didn't have that for the 3 weeks before just came home 4 days ago and now I see that. She said to keep going with pills. Hes fine in general just when his head is low like to eat or stairs it's a issue. He doesn't like jumping on furniture now since this past Fri. I'm really confused
