Whenever I hear talk of cedar, memories of our friends cedar A-Frame cabin rush back. I used to love the smell of that place. They owned that cabin for about forty years. Sadly, their health has declined recently. But they are in their late 80’s.
Most wood cutting places have an offcuts bin. Pick yourself some pieces, by some polyurethane and a few stains and test out finish colours. Personally I like the idea of prefinished birch for the walls
Here in the UK quite a lot of people use some don't of Scandinavian wood oil. Apparently it gives off lots of volatile compounds (VOCs). Trouble is people get fixated on products that appear to be natural. I painted the interior of my van. Orange, grey & white. I have settled on the final look, but plenty of people walk by when the side door is open & go: "Wow, really love the colours." Or something similar. The great thing about paint is that it's easily upgraded.👍
I love the idea of using the turquoise stain as an accent maybe like a backsplash area for the kitchen area when I do my build. And I still think I want to do cedar for the rest I think. 🤔
Go with pre-finished Birch, by the time you get everything in there and add bedding ect... that will give you pops of color to break up the bland. (I prefer hardwood plywood)
If you’re putting multiple coats of polyurethane over the wood, the VOC’s of cedar aren’t going to be an issue, as you’re completely sealing it anyway. Use whatever you like. Unfinished, freshly sawn, or cedar chips and sawdust are the primary culprits for respiratory issues. Aged cedar is also not as much of a problem, until you cut it. I looked into this as I am using (aged) cedar siding on my chicken coops, and they are very sensitive to respiratory issues and cedar wood is not recommended (but it’s free for me and very lightweight), one and a half years later, everyone is doing fine with it.
The anti mold quality is far more beneficial to heath than the minimal so called cedar oil detriments occurring naturally. The inhaled dust from milling and sanding over time might raise some heath concerns somewhat but again the worst problem with living in tight quarers in B.C. is mold and mildew ! That can be allmost deadly! Since you have claimed to be a propane fuel proponent which if un vented will cause much moisture it would stand to reason solid cedar could be seen as the holy grail of van interior wall and ceiling material. Native cedar long houses have been around for thousands of years. The natural clean smell of cedar has sold me alone. I still think it's the safest solution for van dwellers especially us from superdampsville Vancouver!😁 cheers Tim. Ps any left over thinsulate or styro? . I'll put it to use!
Hay love the vlog, I`m in England and am an avid viewer of van life you tube I have built my own van (Pro master) I always find it mystifying that almost everybody goes for the wood cladding of some sort I did mine in 5m ply and then 4 way carpet, good for sound warm and looks good.
I am skeptical that a cedar interior would cause asthma, being around dust ~40hrs/week is quite a bit different than being near planks of wood that are just sitting there not being cut.
Lol Timothy...that's quite the Explorer Steve tribute there at the end :-) I thought it was a shame that you couldn't add glasses and designer stubble to the doll, but then I thought how upset your daughter might get! Assuming of course, that the doll is hers, and not her dad's, ahem...
So iv never had this thought come to me till now? What does a vandwellers do if there Engine fails, or you get laid off? What does one do? I never see videos about people talking about this. If perhaps I had to walk away, I guess I would just give all the contents and solar away to other van dwellers? What would you do if you had to walk away. Let me me know your thoughts on this. I've sorta fallen into a bad spot here. I think I'll be ok, but I never really gave the thought of " what if".
@@Torin_by_the_Ocean well the current employer I have lost the police contract. 3months ago and it's been very slow and were commission. I'll have to leave because it's just not enough even to save up an emergency fund. It's just that bad here. I'm frantically looking for a better outfit. But yes, a large saved amount is a good idea. I came back to this company cuz my dad had a heart attack and he lives in this area. He is doing much better. I will NEVER work for payless towing again. What a junk company.
You'd be living in finished ceder, not working all day breathing in DUST PARTICLES getting lodged in your lungs forcing your body to extract it through your bloodstream, lumpthic system, and entire body. I worked for a number of years in the industrial ventilation industry where and it was my responsibility to evaluate working environments and create and install collection systems. Working in sawmills was the majority of my work. I'd say the article you're read isn't very accurate. I'd have little problems living in cedar. In saying that, I find cedar to dark and depressing, especially in small places. I would use a light weight and cheap wood and color with something heavier than just plain paint. I would choose white. Yes it shows dirt, but that is what I'd want. I feel it is important so I would be forced to clean it more often. There is nothing more unhealthy than living in dirt in very small-tight spaces. And even more important to me is that the color white brightens everything up. But... to each his own. What really matters is what makes you happy. Good thoughs Timothy :)
I had a pet rat years ago that I kept in an aquarium and used cedar shavings. He got some form of asthma that went away after I switched to pine. Of course, I'd want to look at some meta analysis of data of double blind studies to be certain. Otherwise take up smoking and don't worry about the cedar! Lol.
My new van build was done with Baltic Birch
Looks awesome ☺

Your comment requires a coffee reference to get me trolling you. Just saying.
Linescrew1 I’ll do better next time.
@@StaticCamperVan Thank you for your understanding.
It's a wonderful smell, cedar. Are you thinking of coming to Chrome's Xmas meetup?
Ls1 I'll make you a cup of coffee if you show up.

Better safe than sorry. Thanks again for the good info you provide.
Consider mixing 3 different woods for walls, ceiling, trim and doors.

I'm cheering for the stained pine! 👍
Leaning towards that. ☺
Hey Tim, good to see your & up & running, cheers on the coffee! be well out there, tc
I would think you install it the same way you do your cedar planks. Take care,

I have a large bag of polystyrene chunks if you want it.

Trying to avoid carpet for better air quality ☺

just like asbestos. No danger living in a house made from it, but start cutting it up?? NO!

It's mine. Her and I bought them together. She got a Barbie and I got a Ken. Now she can't say I can't play with it. 😆
@@Torin_by_the_Ocean Hahaha :-) Ken and Keller...sounds like a magic act :-)
Just a thought, I saw a fellow who used vinyl flooring on his walls. It looked great. Take care.
Hey, that would be neat. I would choose white vinyl. But what the question is what he has under the vinyl.
I would choose the birch. Cheers
Maybe u could just use a better grade paneling for the walls it woul d definatly be lighter than the cedar
If it's not the cedar it will be the flooring...the inside of your pillows, just do what makes you happy ...and keeps you out of the nut house! ✌🐧
✌💛✌😂😂😂
