    What do you use to kill woodworm? I have an active infestation on my beautiful bench!

    One way to destroy woodworm is to put the item in a dry, well ventilated room. The woodworm will eventually die out. If you want a quicker solution, put the item in environment above 56 - 58 degrees with a circulating fan for a couple of days. That will kill it all. Obviously with smaller items you can just put it a fan oven.

      Good advice. For smaller items, such as vintage wooden planes (tool, not airplane), I put them in the microwave and heat until the wood is hot to the touch. That should surely kill off any unwanted residents in the wood. I've had one molding plane so full of holes, it weighed maybe half of an uninfested one. No point trying to revive one that was so far gone!

    It is very effective and of course worm has to be gotten rid of, however drew, is this not deceitful? If the holes are totally filled in and all polished up would you tell a buyer that it was full of woodworm or just let it go? Got you thinking haven't I lol imagine a person hasn't noticed and standing there counting out £750 CASH NOTES to hand over to you, would you point out that it was riddled with worm?

    Great video. I use a boron based woodworm powder dissolved in water which is supposed to be not toxic to people and pets. Could you pour melted wax onto the surfaces?

    • @eddietwang
      @eddietwang ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing is to use the method recommended but if you find one of those bits were the wood is badly damaged and falling off you can remove the really fragile stuff then when completely dry you can coulor it with a water based wood stain, as it will be a lot lighter then the sound or less damaged timber.When completely dry again Brush on some shellac or sanding sealer and this will harden the wood,you can buy products for this but Shellac is fine.you can then do the waxing.you don't want to be Adding new timber especially on really old oak furniture as the worm holes are part of the history.

    After killing the wood worms, why would you not want to fill the hole up with thin epoxy or super thin super glue to restore lost integrity in the wood from the worm holes?

    • @JasonJason210
      @JasonJason210 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those holes go deep and connect with other holes. Filling it with epoxy would be very difficult even if it were possible.

    • @GenePavlovsky
      @GenePavlovsky 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is an entire labyrinth of tunnels inside the wood, holes are just the exits. I think it would be extremely difficult to fill these tunnels with epoxy, it might be also quite difficult to avoid a mess (I'm guessing you'd have to sand the wood afterwards, destroying the original finish). Anyway, according to an article I read, if the wood had lost it's structural integrity, and is used in a load-bearing capacity (e.g. chair), epoxy wouldn't help to restore it's strength: www.epoxyworks.com/index.php/thinning-west-system-epoxy/

    • @JoshD1001
      @JoshD1001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadow Cyborg All depends how bad the infestation was. Sometimes it’s only a few and structurally the wood is still absolutely fine. Other times woodworm can absolutely destroy the wood and render it useless. Literally like dust in your hands.

    I always used boot polish after a good spray of parafin to kill them. Also please could you use the word Opaline correctly Opal-leen, glass the colour of Opals. Think Aquamarine or Vaseline if you like. The modern idiom does not suit. Chests of drawers, mahogany good quality usually had oak drawers being an hard wood an we called them 'oak lined ' drawers. Don't know why. Know my Sheraton from Hepplewhite or Chippendale. 😎

    A lot of websites say you have to remove all paint or varnish. I noticed that you applied the woodworm killer directly to the vanished treated wood. Can this be done with painted wood as well?

    Some insects fill up holes with mud. Purpose is unknown. Not the woodworms. Also other are carpenter bees. Those live in the wood holes.

    If not all killed you’ll have some serious problems if you put this chair in your house. They will spread.

    • @jordanxfile
      @jordanxfile 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I wouldn't feel comfortable with just one go either. Plus, he didn't strip the wood from its finish, so who knows how effectively the solution was absorbed. Woodworms have a life cycle like every other bug; it would be better to apply the solution a few times over a period of time and also inject it into the holes for added efficacy.

    How about the integrity of the wood. We don't want our lovely, but rather chubby aunty Mable to have a nasty experience, do we?
