    Such a great theme song!!! I enjoyed this instalment of Bond but something about it didn't give it the same kick as some of the others. It was super cool to see Sean back as Bond but there were moments where it felt like he was just doing it for money. Overall though a fun movie with some really cool action!!
    Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

      After poor box office for OHMSS, they backed up a truck of money to Connery. As for Never Say Never Again, I liked it more than Moore's Octopussy, released at the same time. (Both did well financially). Just having Connery back made up for any other issue. And Barbara Carrera!

      I simply HATED the Moore movies. That's when I stopped going to Bond movies, until the Dalton films. Moore was too silly and nice. Watered-down Bond. Hardly ever made use of his license to kill.

    How and why Sir Sean Connery came back is kinda complex and beyond the comment section to really do the subject justice. There are plenty of video essays out there on the subject if you're interested.
    Fun Fact: During a late 1990s interview, Bruce Glover recalled that he and Putter Smith had Sir Sean Connery convinced that the two were actually openly homosexual. Glover added that a few years later while on an airline flight he was caught red-handed by Connery flirting with a female flight attendant.
    Bonus Fact: Because of Sir Sean Connery's high fee, the special effects budget was significantly scaled back. Connery was reportedly paid $1.25M to return as James Bond, a figure unheard of in those days.

      Along the same lines, Elizabeth Taylor was the first person to be guaranteed a minimum salary of $1 million to star in a film. With all of the extras in her contract, she ultimately received $7 million for her part in Cleopatra (1963). When that amount was combined with the huge cost of the production, 20th Century Fox nearly went bankrupt. If anyone is interested and can find a copy of the 2000 documentary, Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood, it's well worth a viewing.

    Some critics call Diamonds Are Forever the “unofficial first Roger Moore Bond movie," even though Moore wouldn't make his debut until the next film, Live And Let Die. Diamonds Are Forever does contain many tropes that would become common during the Moore era, such as the opening titles with the signature “open palms" intro, designed by Marvin Hamlich.

    Maybe it’s just me but any time James Bond comes to America, it SUCKS lol. It just seems sooo bland and boring. This movie and A View To A Kill are the two that come to mind. Maybe it’s because there’s nothing exotic about Las Vegas and San Fransisco but yeah, it’s just meh. Stick to the rest of the world, 007 lol
    Edit: I just remembered Live and Let Die. That one was okay. The NY scenes were meh except for the blaxploitation vibe. And the action scenes in the bayou setting later in the movie made up for it too

    Hearing you say that you think the action in this movie is better than in OHMSS literally made my heart hurt. In your defense, the elevator fight scene was pretty good, Everything else, though? Yikes! Some of the worst action in the entire series, imo.
    The car chase and moon buggy chase barely have any energy whatsoever to them. It seems they tried to play those sequences for laughs, but even that doesn't work. And don't even get me started on the action climax. It's so incredibly bad and a huge step backwards from OHMSS and YOLT.

    • @MAMoreno
      @MAMoreno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it felt as if they were trying to do something as big as the finales of the last three EON Bond films, but they seemed to be doing it on a budget more akin to that of Goldfinger's last act. The next two Bond films wisely scaled back their climaxes to fit with the tighter budget.

    • @nikolaiquack8548
      @nikolaiquack8548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MAMoreno Exactly. There's also this story about a gigantic explosion that was supposed to happen on the oil rig accidentally going off before they rolled the cameras. Which must've been devastating. There was originally also a chase planned, where Bond would go after Blofeld in his sub and they would end up brutally fighting in a salt mine. Got cut out of the script due to time and budget constraints.
      Honestly, Connery getting this ridiculous amount of money really hurt the production.

    Diamonds has a great titles song, some creepy gay henchmen and the best joke in the series. Apart from a few Barry motifs and a few bits from Ken Adam it doesn't have much else unless you're into overweight Connery, Blofeld in drag and some of the dullest action in the series. FYI.. in real life Sean did handle those coconuts

  • @skywaymanaz

    Maybe it’s not as big of a deal to the younger generation but Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd were some of the first gay characters in a major motion picture. There were others before that seem obvious when looked at today but were dancing around the Hayes code. The ending of Some Like it Hot comes to mind. To be fair these two dance around it a little too but they’re way more obvious. Holding hands after killing the dentist and Mr. Wint shooting daggers with his eyes at Mr. Kidd thinking Tiffany Case was attractive . . . for a lady. Unfortunately they also became part of a Hollywood pattern that a character can seem to be gay as long as they’re evil and get killed. Anyhoo not sure if they were too subtle for you to figure out or it was just a meh, seen it. Also you didn’t pick up on Willard Whyte clearly being a fictional Howard Hughes. A recluse who no one has seen in years. One who owns Las Vegas casinos and aerospace companies among others nationwide. On the DVD extras Jimmy Dean expressed some concern he was playing a Howard Hughes figure since he was performing at the time in a Hughes owned casino. He took the risk because Jimmy Dean Sausage was a financial success. Howard Hughes allegedly loved the film screening it several times over and over.

    Diamonds are forever is good for a laugh at best, at worst it is a very bland and unremarkable bond film especially for Connery who looked like he aged 20 years since You Only Live Twice. He did it for the money nothing more and it shows. I think had he done On Her Majesty’s Secret Service instead of this one it would’ve been a better way for him to go out.

    American actor John Gavin was first signed to play Bond in this movie before Connery was reluctantly persuaded by the head of United Artists to come back one more time. Gavin did receive a payment and gracefully bowed out. FYI-the “goop” in the pre-credits sequence the guy with the gun was in was actually mashed potatoes. The car chase in Vegas down the alley proved to be an editing nightmare because they realized afterwards the car went up on one set of wheels and came out on the other. A quick shot had to be inserted tilting Bond and Tiffany back and forth to try to explain the change. You’re right about Connery’s return. He didn’t want to come back to the role and did it for the money only. Many elaborate story ideas had been pitched but were tossed due to the amount paid to Connery. The continuation from the previous film was dumped because Lazenby didn’t return. At that time, and for years to come, OHMSS was treated as if it never happened. It was almost never shown on TV and was treated as the bastard child of the series until decades later.

  • @joshuajoshua2732
    @joshuajoshua2732 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep money was the only reason Sean Connery came back to the role as he has been trying to distance himself from James Bond.
    This is the beginning of campy era Bond.
    Mr. Wind and Mr. Kidd I thought were great villains the first gay characters in a Bond movie.
    There's no real continuity or canon in James Bond films except the Craig films because as you realise by now each movie are self contained different missions while in the Craig era their continuous.
    The next Bond movie Connery does in not official to the franchise as neither Albert Broccoli or MGM had any part of.

    I have Blofeld’s cat! It’s called a Chinchilla Persian, it’s also a breed made famous for being on the cans and bags of Fancy Feast cat food. These are really affectionate cats and they love to sleep on your lap. It’s also a big breed, and my male weighs 20 lbs.
    The actor who plays Blofeld in this movie is English character actor Charles Grey.
    He did a lot of television and film work, but he’s also famous for being the narrator in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” who dances to the “Time Warp” song on his desk. Whenever he would appear onscreen people in the audience would yell out “Where’s your fucking neck?”.

    While I can't agree with you on the action, I totally agree on the music. Barry did an outstanding job with the score and the title song by Shirley Bassey is one of the best of the series. I actually think Connery is having a lot of fun here. Sure, it was just a paycheck for him, but he had fun working for that paycheck and I think it comes across in his performance.
    And while the script isn't very good in terms of the story, it does have some a-level dialogues. Those are brilliantly written.

    Still one of my Fav Bond films. I like the scenes of old Downtown LV and in the 1st part of the chase with the Mustang Mach 1 you can see where the Plaza was being built then at the end of Fremont St. The hotel where James does his mountaineering was the old Hilton hotel & casino where Elvis made his home for many years. It's still there under a different name. The Circus Circus is still there and they used to have the performers overhead but not sure if they still do. Willard Whyte is an obvious take off of Howard Hughes who lived there and bought up many properties back in his time. No matter what others say, to me it's still a Fun Flick.

    If you're confused about Plenty ending up dead and why her corpse is floating in Tiffany's pool, I can explain. In a deleted scene, after she's thrown into the pool, she comes back to the apartment, only to find Bond and Tiffany in bed, and she takes something. While this part of was filmed and has since been released to the public, another scene where Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint kill her when they mistake her for Tiffany wasn't filmed because it dawned on the film makers that this would create a continuity error.

It’s a massive, world-wide thing. He told me that even though individuals have different favorites and different reasons for liking the different Bonds and movies that the generally agreed upon opinion is that George Lazenby was the best Bond. He’s the smartest and the toughest. The only problem was that he only did one, although that might be the blessing because he didn’t get to taint Bond with any mistakes in a second film.

    At the time spy spoofs were popular and this film tries to be in that vein and it doesn't work and Connery seems to be rolling his eyes throughout. A revenge film would have been much better and Tracy's death isn't even mentioned in this film because they got mostly silly than the serioys!-leaning of OHMSS. 1:11 Connery was paid a fortune to return when the studio demanded he be brought back regardless of what it cost. Plus his career wasn't exactly going great after he quit the role, so he was willing to come back and do one more.
    It's a shame they didn't do a followup to OHMSS and instead tried to recreate the success of Goldfinger(the original concept for the villain was Goldfinger's twin brother). This is one of the worst entries in the series and felt like a Roger Moore movie featuring Connery(who was fat and bored).
