Absolutely love the subtle sound cue of the crickets falling silent at 2:28 before the encounter really kicks off
The attention to detail- amazing.
And then at the end they come back and the dog's start barking. Its like nature even takes a breath. Very subtle but it gives the scene immense weight.
That shit is based on real life. Sasqautch experiences are the same. The aliens and UFOs are fallen angels, Sasqautch are nephilim, their offspring, they look like humans in the face with hair giant bodies, they look nothing like apes like t.v shows and movies would have you think.

i still remember in the theater how when Roy waves the car (UFO) to pass him at the railroad crossing how the audience nervously gasped when the lights behind him went up. This movie was a masterpiece of subverted expectations. Speilberg played the audience like a fish on a line

The first time I saw this movie, I was "WOW" - and after all these years I still get goosebumps watching it! :)
... GOOSE BUMPS??? my stomach STILL freaks out when Roy gets zapped at the stop 🛑 sign 🛑... I had a close encounter of the second kind during the Challengers STS-51 recovery operation back in March/April of '86.

All before CGI. This is some of the best special effects ever, in any film.

Unlike the CGI movies, that was cinematographic art that required serious skill and work.
There's a great behind-the-scenes doc where they show the great lengths they had to go to for these shots.
Soon, this will be our reality.
The effects still hold up. This is better than most of what we see today.
Yup. I mean look at Marvel for example. These effects are comparable or better for that matter.
The effects hold up well, but you can't hide the 1970s analog technology portrayed that somewhat dates the film.
Far superior and realistic than CGI
The visual effects were all shot on 65mm!! The visual effects were shot higher resolution than the live action material. Once they were completed they made a one step reduction print to marry it to the 35mm live action so at any time the visual effects are always at a higher resolution than any live action material. The quality is always top notch. When you hire Doug Trumbull you're getting the best.

The late actor Roberts Blossom played the older guy by the road side, slowly whistling ("She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain when She Comes") and later talking about Bigfoot.
He later also played the elderly neighbor (with the snow shovel) in the original "Home Alone". Always loved that scene with him and Macaulay Culkin, in the church, on Xmas Eve.
And don't forget CHRISTINE 😮he sells him the car.

Actually, if you watch closely, you can spot several of these dots moving across the star field of their own accord throughout the clip 😉

I remember years ago the space shuttle un-docking from the international space station. The news reported, down to the minute, when we would see it overhead in Wisconsin. I got my two boys out there in this field by our place to see this. We waited; we watched. Then, my youngest said, "there it is!" Both space craft came directly inline with us over the sky. TWO bright dots, close together, sailing over us like something from a space movie. It was a great memory.

I want to go back and live it all over again. The 70’s and 80’s were the best years of my life. We had the best music that had meaning and the best TV shows and specials back then and lived in the last of the best decades in America..it was the party of a life time and we lived it well. We had great shows like, Falcon Crest, Dallas, Knots Landing, Dynasty,The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, ALF, The Six Million dollar man, The Dukes of Hazard, BJ and the Bear, Air Wolf, Battle Star Galactica! Knight Rider and for the first time ever the motion pictures of, Star Wars, Star Trek, Superman, Spider Man, Close Encounters of the third kind, E.T., Poltergeist, Jaws, Friday the 13th, Aliens, (No not the ones being aloud to just walk into our country right now in 2024), Predator and many more… We also celebrated the bicentennial in the 70’s when the entire country celebrated it from Apr 1, 1975 - Jul 4, 1976. It was like the 4th of July every day. It was fantastic!.…it was such a better time to be alive in this county. We never had the problems that are here today. It was unheard of for kids being shot and men walking around dressed as women. It was the best years of my life, It was the last of America and we were lucky to have experienced it.

Watched this movie more than 100 times and still can't be tired of it. Because I had the big luck of seeing ufos 3 times in my life. The strangeness is the same as in this Spielberg's classic.

The whimsical nature of this scene, and the film in general, is one of the things that makes this film a real landmark work in sci-fi. There's a fundamental benevolence at work, even though what happens is still weird and frightening.
I wouldn’t count on undeserved benevolence.
I hardly think that the aliens kidnapping the boy and the military's contamination scenes were, as you put it, 'whimsical'. Neither the shattering of the lights when they were communicating with the 'mother ship'. It was an entirely intense film once it got going
We visited Devil's Tower on our honeymoon back in 2015. It was surreal seeing all of the filming locations in real life.
It is amazing how the guard stand and the area around the entrance still look the same as in the movie.
We camped at the tower a few months after the movie came out.
Seventies Steven Spielberg is absolute apex modern cinema
I saw Close Encounters of The Third Kind as a teenager. This sequence is from the director's cut. Pay attention to some of the stars that are moving across the sky.
Suspect they were additional craft used later in film...all people on road were invited

And I remember sitting in the cinema and it was so creepy, when the postboxes got so weird. Great movie, music beautiful, when they play to each others.

I watched this movie when I was a kid and it scared me, but the ending always left me floored. I revisited it recently and it’s become my new favorite movie
Fun fact: the young boy actor (who’s grown up and married now and is retired) still gets fan-mail!
He later got a leading role in "The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid".

Ive seen 3 as well, 1 big black triangle early 90s, 1 medium black triangle 2010, 7-8 orange orbs 2012. All very close up, few hundred feet.

This movie is pretty accurate about our mysteries watchers, the light around their crafts are so bright sometimes it blocks our view of the craft itself.

Roy's radio tells people standing middle road
Imagine aliens with such a sense of humor, that they decided to to go not over, but through the toll gates.
Since it was being observed (by the camera), it was forced into superposition and took all routes simultaneously.
Frankly, I was surprised they were suddenly small enough to fit through a toll gate.
You know the aliens were like, "Watch this!"
My favorite part is that they were polite enough to raise the arms first.
And then flip the lights to Stop. They got that right, ETs are total trolls.
I loved Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and this particular part was definitely a favorite! Thanks for the memories.
I agree with all the greatness of this movie, but there is something that always bugged me: the complete irresponsibility of the whistling man at 6:26 acknowledging the boy in the middle of the road and yet, not making the slightest effort to get him out of there even though he knows something is coming.
These people have always seemed strange to me. What are they doing here in the middle of the night? Maybe aliens in disguise.

He's hopelessly lost one moment, then all of a sudden he knows where everything is. I wonder if the aliens made him know it subconsciously?
One of the best things about Close Encounters is it portrayed aliens as peaceful, and our response as friendly and cooperative (the ending mountain scene). They weren't seen as bloodthirsty monsters with us automatically using military force. If they really have been visiting us over the centuries, and their intentions were evil and controlling, we would have seen the devastating results by now. I, for one, hope to still be alive when the formal revealing comes out.
They were friendly but they still had no concept of consent. I guess that's strictly a human quirk.
They terrified a mother and then abducted her child. Hardly peaceful.
I read a book once where the author speculated that the huge difference in tone between CEot3K and Independence Day was due to THEM being more aware of what the ETs were like and what their objecties were. Weird but, given it was a book about the 'Moon Hoax', what can you expect?
If they have in fact been watching us all throughout our history (which Stargate had suggested was the case), they likely will not be showing themselves any time soon, when as a species, we are more divided and ignorant than ever (we can't even agree on how many genders there are now).......
They're more likely to have terrestrial origins to say the least. While I wouldn't rule out other extraterrestrial entities, my research indicates we're and have been dealing with a breakaway civilization, with a slight possibility of time travelling involved.
This scene beats the arrival of the Mother Ship........but only by a whisker! In the cinema at the time, 300 jaws were on the floor......fingers were frozen over the popcorn....you could have heard a pin drop......time stood still.......and that folks, equates to Steven Spielberg! PS "Hey Earthling!......see you gotta map; mind if we have look at it?"
I remember being 13, it equal parts awe and fear then...pleasure. What a ride, Steven!!! It's like he let's you know in the little joke when the headlight go up instead of around "these guys are okay"

The pregnant pause in this scene just before the UFO's round the corner is fabulous. The weird people in the back of the pick up truck all stand like they've seen this before. The old guy whistling "She'll be coming round the mountain". It all sets up an expectation. Dreyfuss is like...."Um wtf?? then he turns and the UFO scout ships round the corner in a dazzling display. In the movie theater this scene was like we were all seeing a UFO. This made quite an impression on me at the time.
You know I always thought the cop who flew off the road had died, but looking at the clip now it looks like he probably survived. Though he was likely injured.

1977 was a magical year. Both Star Wars and Close Encounters opened in theaters that same year. One by Lucas & the other by Spielberg. No one imagined that they would shortly collaborate & give us Raiders of the Lost Ark. And all had music by John Williams. ☺️

If you're careful, you can see a lot of lights wandering around.
I bet, if I asked my father about it, he would remember not only the film, but this chase scene, too. And, invariably, he'd make some remark about the little red UFO and how it set the toll booth alarm bell off.
Dad is not an SF fan, you see, but when I was a child, our family sat down to watch this film which was being shown on TV, one weekend afternoon. A nice way to fill an otherwise empty afternoon, but such was the power of this film that it kept our family mesmerised, and left some indelible images in our minds, just as the aliens left images if the Devil's Tower in the minds of those they encountered. In fact, it was my first encounter with said landmark and I was delighted to learn later that it was real.
In this day and age of CGI, we are bombarded with breath-taking films, but very few of them have the kind of impact as this one did. The 'Avatar' franchise and the 'Jurassic Park/World' may do, but they've had time to build on their respective universes. 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' might seem dated and rather sparse to modern movie-goers, but without it and its contemporaries, we might not have the rich film world we do today.

I was a very yong kid then, when I saw this movie in thr theatre. Made a very deep impression on my young mind, even more later when we (my entire family) saw 3 big orbs in a triangular pattern slowly traversing a late Sunday night sky (which later was officially explained as rocket debris during re-entry).
This entire sequence is a special effects tour de force.
I’m only just now appreciating the flawlessness of that final wide shot of the flashing clouds and the lights on the landscape below coming back on.
It’s a pure effects shot, but it’s so dramatically effective and seamless that you forget that’s what it is.

Look up the portage county UFO chase, April 17, 1966. 5 a.m. crazy story that inspired this scene. A pair of portage county (northeast Ohio) deputy sheriff's chased a UFO over 80 miles at up to 103 mph. Actually there with up to 3 chases total that morning with a ton of witnesses including other law enforcement officials...but the air force and project blue book were having none of it lol.
The portage county UFO chase ended not far from me. It was over in Conway PA where the UFO went up headed for the sky with PA-ANG F-102 delta darts chasing it

This movie was such a hit in 1977, that it was re-released in 1980 with deleted scenes.
This movie is part of my childhood. You mention this title, and anyone from that era immediatly connects something with it.
The (Academy Award winning) night time Cinematograhy throughout this provocative film is sublime, haunting and beautiful to see and to hear and to feel and i experienced this cinematic wonder upon the big silver screen the way it was made to be seen and forever altering the awe struck mind of that blown away 11 year old boy so long ago, along with watching Star Wars both during 1977, wow what a fantastic year for great movies.
This movie will forever be one of my favorites but the title of this video is somewhat ridiculous. If THIS UFO chase scene right here is the best, there must be others. Can you name just ONE other UFO chase scene of movie history? I'd love to watch that movie.

Yeah, the UFO police chase in Ohio was based on real events.
A couple years ago, my brother and I were talking to a former neighbor on Skype who lived in Stow, Ohio. She said that her son and another neighbor kid were in the back yard and witnessed a UFO hovering behind Fishcreek Elementary School in the summer of 1974. Both kids became frightened when the UFO shot two beams of light down into the ground.
We called her son and he confirmed the UFO story. He said the UFO was a bright silver disk and made absolutely no noise.
I became convinced that there must be a record of this UFO and, sure enough, somebody near Kent, Ohio had spotted a silver disk UFO that made no noise in August 1974. Fishcreek Elementary is not far from Kent.
Field-effect propulsion like TT Brown, and Searl disks are also silent. Extreme high Voltage, almost no Amperage. Finally coming out for all to see, thank God for the Internet!

There is actually more to that billboard sequence. There is a close up of the UFO's spotlight on the billboard before it moves on.
Back when McDonalds tasted much better than today. The Aliens would have loved it.

Best Chase scene ever in the film
even more interesting is the fact that it was based on a real police pursuit in the early 60s, the officers that were involved reported the chase and then were fired without explanation

07:56 - 08:00 I have recently watched this movie for the first time. What's interesting is that I had already seen that sphere of light beam on a spring night in 1994, together with a friend of mine and I had almost forgotten this experience. Its moving manner was exactly like that. While it was moving above fast and far afield, it suddenly turned and came directly towards us, then stopped just in front of us. We were scared and tried to run away but fell. It was just floating at the moment and a second later , it flied away and disappeared in the sky. Seeing it in a 1977 movie was surprising as much as our real life experience.
Always a perfect classic.

A master piece
Of all the UFO chase scenes I've seen including that time I was chased down M-95 by a UFO, This scene has to be the best.
As a kid this movie scared the hell out of me and every time I finished watching it I felt floored. Still my favorite movie ever
Ahh movies made with soul, excellence, and patience devoid of ADHD filming. I miss that...
the idea that Alien craft can mess with our electronics against our will always scared me about this film as a kid but as I get older it's great cinema plus those scenes are based on documented encounters, victims reported their cars cutting out or their appliances frying.
And in the case of our military bases, they turned some of our ICBMs offline. Scary.

I wish id been around to see this at Cinema in 77 it would have been epic.
It was hugely epic. The audience was waiting with baited breath to see the UFO's. That slow rumble as they round the corner for the first time then roar off down the highway. (show stopper) Punctuated by the little red whoosh at the end. All with the subwoofers vibrating the whole theatre. In 70mm this truly was magical

Just as epic was when we saw STAR WARS May 25th, 1977, in Manhattan at Lowes 59th street. It blew us into the back of the theatre. We waited in line for two hours. It was epic. Life-changing. Thanks Lucas and Spielberg!

Loved the scene where the ship passed over him totally silent. all the surface details. Afterwards I used to have dreams about multiple alien ships crossing the night sky like that and fighter jets taking off after them. maybe after watching this I will have the dream again.
It was show in 70 mm in theaters. Quite impressive even today.
This was a pretty solid trilogy overall, but I have to say I like the third one the best. The first and second kind had their moments, yet this one hit it out of the park. And the sequel to this, the fourth kind, I find it difficult to acknowledge it even exists -- even Battlefield Earth was better.
For years I've wondered what the little red orb was supposed to be that split into 3 at the state line toll booths. Do the makers of this film even know?
The little red "Whoosh" is a tribute to Walt Disney and the 7 Dwarves. There would always be one last dwarf arriving late. The red whoosh is the punctuation mark. The late dwarf. One, Two, Three............... And the punctuation mark. Steven Spielberg has talked about it.
I remember when I went to see it , in the theatres when it first came out, and the audience was so blown away , it was what films should be today, and much has changed over time,but I will never forget this Epic Movie!!!!! Thank you for making my teen years the best,Mr.Spielberg!

I like that Spielberg put a lot of meaningful Easter eggs in his movies.
For example:
The sign is swinging back and forth and then everything stops. Subconsciously we read the bottom half of the sign and it says, "Cross Roads"
And this is where the character is at; he is at a cross road.
Everything that he previously thought was normal and true has been turned on its head. Now he has to make sense of information that he's never seen before in the natural world.
